Space Cadets versus Christmas Comes Early
back to
Home Planet
The first half of this match was a very pleasant affair. Kaltica and KSired couldn't make it for religious reasons (i.e. it was Acquire night), but the rest of the Cadets showed up in strength. The first half was marred by the usual ping problems.

The second half, played on Monday, January 19th, 1998, was nowhere near as pleasant. The opposing captain, unaware that we use Pacific time when scheduling matches on OKBridge, thought the match started an hour earlier than we did. Showing up an hour too early, they assumed that we were late, demanded that Kaltica close down the FireSide presentation that he was giving (in the middle of a hand, no less!) and were quite perturbed when he insisted on finishing that hand before ending the FireSide. They became downright surly when we had to scramble to find replacement players. Their tempers did not improve when our pings acted up again. All in all, a thoroughly unpleasant match...and one which soured us on the Riko Ladder experience for months to come. It ended with a lecture from their captain on punctuality, insisting that next time we play them we should be "on time and prepared". Kaltica's response was brief and to the point:

"You think there's going to be a next time???"

The comments that you see between the hands are intended for Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as you enjoy these records of the decisive hands in this match.

Pre-empts work. With a flat 15 HCPs, West did not find
a balancing double here, resulting in E-W missing 4S. On another
day, North may have turned up with a significantly better hand
(say, East's) and such a double might have backfired.

Ward Rule #17 states: "The only defence against a pre-empt
is an overbid." Here, Sandy77 greets 4H with a "co-operative"
double. This invites partner to bid ONLY with a LONG suit.
Holding FIVE Spades East correctly removed to 4S and chalked
up a well-earned +420. Well done!

I like to follow this general rule of "co-operative"
doubles: leave them in unless you have a 5+card unbid suit.
For a penalty double (say, of a 4S, 5C or 5D pre-emptive),
leave then in unless you have a 6+card unbid suit.

3C by West here was a fine bid, asking for help in the Club
suit here his losers reside. East has NOTHING in Clubs, but has
a good hand nevertheless: a FOURTH trump and a singleton King
of Diamonds. This being the case, I slightly prefer a 3D rebid
by East to the signoff in 3H. 3D would toss the ball back to
West, showing a hand with something in Diamonds. If this were
NOT enough for West, West could still stop in 3H, allowing East
to PASS if 3D was NOT based on some Club values to go with the
Diamond strength. With THIS West hand, any sign of life from
East would suffice, and 4H would be reached.

First, notice that East bids 2H and NOT 1S here. This is
because 1S followed by 2H shows a slightly stronger hand. The
basic rule is to NOT show the Spade suit unless you are ready
to raise a possible 2H rebid by Opener (1H:1S:2H) to 3H.

	Second, over a takeout double of 2H a "re-raise" to 3H
is PRE-EMPTIVE, showing a BAD hand with SIX or more Hearts.
Holding a GOOD opener with FIVE Hearts, West should REDOUBLE
here. This alerts partner to the E-W defensive strength...and
may set up N-S for a HUGE penalty or may lead to 4H E-W.

N-S made a FINE stop in 4C to make a plus score here. Note
one of the many advantages of a NON-Forcing 1NT response to
1-of-a-major: 2C now promises FOUR or more Clubs (not 3+, as
opposite a FORCING 1NT response). Knowing this, South is
comfortable making a highly invitational 4C raise, confident
of a NINE card fit.

The 1NT opening here was weak (12-15). Over 2S, East made
a FORCING 3H free bid. To stop in 3H, East must bid a Lebensohl
2NT, forcing partner to rebid 3C, and THEN bid 3H. (Lebensohl
is a VERY useful convention, and is explained in an article on
my TUTORS web site at: http://www.escape.ca/~btreble/tutors.htm).

4S here smacks of "telling the same joke twice" in that
it is too "unilateral". North should PASS 4H around to South,
who will no doubt greet it warmly!

North's BEST chance of holding 4S double to down one or
two is to play DIAMONDS early, trying to negotiate a ruff in
the dummy.

2S here was a sign-off in a minor suit. As a slight variation
on SAYC-OK practice, Opener will rebid 2NT with better Diamonds or
3C (as here) with a preference for Clubs. This helps if West
happens to have a weak hand with 5-5 in the minors.

"Why wouldn't Opener bid 3D instead of 2NT with better
Diamonds?" you may ask. The simple answer is that 3D would
bypass 3C, and Responder may well wish to stop in 3C.

2C here is one my least favourite conventions, CAPP, showing
a 1-suiter with length in ANY suit. On this hand, N-S fail to
find their reasonable 3S contract since North does NOT know about
the Spades. This is just as well HERE, since 3S will go down two
on a Heart lead and good defence, but USUALLY it is better to
KNOW about a 9-card fit when one is present.

Again, we see the same joke told twice. Having pre-empted
with 3C, West simply does NOT have a bid over 3S. This is
especially true at IMPs, where -500 is more than just "one bad
board". At MatchPoints, a bottom board can be recovered the
next hand. But at IMPs, the odds of a flat board are MUCH
higher, meaning that one may NOT have the chance to recover the
lost IMPs so quickly.

East likely intended the double of 1S here as penalty. Had
West passed, this double would have yielded +200 or even +500.
But with a sixth Heart and such a poor hand, West can be forgiven
for removing to the safety of 2H. Remember, a DOUBLE after
passing a takeout double of partner's opening bid is PENALTY.

Here we see yet another bad hand for the forcing 1NT reply
to 1-of-a-major. West's raise to 3C was maximal, and suggested
FIVE Clubs, since 2C showed only 3+ Clubs. East should, of
course, PASS 3C. Without a Spade fit, 3NT will require a GOOD
Club suit AND a maximum for West. Note that even if West had
held the C-Q instead of the H-Q, 3NT would STILL be short one
trick on the expected Heart lead.

1NT on 11 HCPs? Yup. Good bid, too! Without a Spade fit,
West makes a very wise devaluation here. Of course, if East had
made ANY rebid, West would rebid aggressively. With a flat 14
HCPs, East had no such intention. 1NT, the perfect MATCHPOINT
spot, is also a very good IMP place for this hand with 8 sure
tricks.

While a 1-over-1 free bid is forcing over an opponent's
takeout double, a 2-over-1 free bid is NOT. East's 2D bid here
was a Fit Inspired Bid ("FIB") of sorts; he is trying to direct
a lead while intending to retreat to 2H as appropriate. An
interesting approach!

North should be HAPPY that E-W have settled in his ONLY
suit, and should PASS 2D...especially knowing that Hearts are
breaking WELL for the opponents. That said, South, having
PASSED the first double, should compete with 2S over 2H.

Here East did not "muddy the waters" over the double, as
RBrough did at the other table. South was thereby able to show
the Spade suit. North's 2H cuebid of the enemy suit showed a
GREAT hand. South's 2S rebid showed a near-bust hand, and this
was enough to stop North in her tracks. Nicely bid!

2H here could have been bid on as many as 18 points, so
South dutifully raised to 3H. Note that, had North's minors
been reverse, 4H would have been a LOT easier. As it was,
N-S required a non-diamond lead, S-KQ onside and a favourable
Heart break to make 4H. Lucky! In my opinion, North should
have PASSED 3H with this poorish 16-point hand.

Note the SPADE lead from dummy at trick 6. North
correctly ATTACKS HER LENGTH immediately, setting up the
source of tricks in Spades. Well played !

JBodom "got away with one" here. The double risked hearing
a Diamond or Spade bid from South--BOTH of which would prove
very awkward. Fortunately, though, South bid the ONLY suit that
North could support. If *I* were to bid over 3C, I would simply
overcall 3H. PASSING, however, is a much more reasonable course.

West's nice "Hemmingway" style 3C opening bid against
vulnerable opponents catches N-S with no recourse other than
to pass and collect a paltry +50. If North were to overcall
3H South would be VERY hard-pressed to pass. And, if South
were to balance with a double of 3C, North would undoubtedly
leap to 4H. 4H is destined to go down after S-AK, a Spade
ruff and an inevitable Club trick.

Declarer failed to attack her length early enough to enjoy
the long Clubs here. Drawing trumps with a singleton Diamond on
dummy was also not a good plan. By ruffing two Diamonds on Dummy
Declarer can conceded a Heart, a Spade and Club here...and MAY
make 5H if the clubs can provide a Spade pitch for Declarer.

Still, Declarer could still have made FOUR Hearts had
she not mismoused at trick 7. She *meant* to stomp on the
C-King with Dummy's C-Ace, holding her Club losers to one.
Still, she could recover by RISING with the C-Ace at trick
eight, losing only 1 Club, 1 Spade and 1 Diamond. :(

Guido played this hand spectacularly well. He scored THREE
ruffs with his short trumps on dummy before drawing trups with ONE
loser there, eventually pitching a black loser on the D-Queen to
claim his contract.

This hand illustrates the Principle of Restricted choice,
which we call the "2HARD" (2 Honours are rarely doubleton) Principle.
When the D-10 appears on our left, should we assume that it is
singleton or doubleton? This declarer took the winning view: that
it was singleton. The double finesse in diamonds brought home a
difficult contract. Declarer also drew an inference from the
Heart lead and the revelation that East had CLUB length to infer
that the D-10 might be a singleton. All of this said, there was
PLENTY of room for East to have D-1098...and the odds of a 3-2
break are about TWICE that of a 4-1 break.

Here Declarer choose to rely on a 3-2 Diamond break, and
came to grief when they broke 4-1. This was an application of
Ward's 13th Rule: "No good play ever went unpunished!" :(

New partners bring with them preconceptions of what is
"standard". North presumed that a 2-over-1 response followed
by a raise to 3H showed 10-12 points. South would argue that
such a hand is described by a LIMIT raise (1H:3H), which North
presumed would show FOUR trumps. The SAYC-OK notes, however,
are quite specific on the latter point: 1H:3H shows THREE or
more Hearts. Hence, 2D follwed by 3H should show 13-15 points,
forcing game without suggesting slam.

With 4 trumps and a singleton Spade, West would not have
needed much in the way of HCPs for the 3H bid. For this reason,
East-West were not able to find a double of 4S here to protect
the likely +620 in their 4H contract. Had E-W been playing
Defensive Doubles, West could have doubled 3C (or bid 3D to
suggest a Diamond lead) to show DEFENSIVE values in support of
Hearts. THEN East-West would have had no difficulty finding a
double of 4S.

In the play, West made a nice DUCK of the D-Queen lead,
preserving E-W's natural Diamond tricks. In this way, East did
NOT have to ruff a diamond with his natural trump tricks. That
said, East should NOT lead a diamond in the first place. More
thematic would have been a HEART lead, hoping to SHORT RUFF
Declarer at some point in the play.

The pre-emptive action by E-W made it difficult for N-S
to find their sacrifice in 4S here. South chose not to make a
takeout double of 2H because of the lack of a 4th Spade, the
minimal values and what might have been two Heart tricks on
defence (if North had two Hearts and Declarer misguessed).

The E-W bidding is rather difficult to understand here. If
the double of 2S was intended as penalty, East should be DELIGHTED
to leave it in. If the double is intended as a balancing action, it
would seem suicidal: West has a minimal hand and one fewer Diamond
than partner might expect. In either event, such brinkmanship would
be more apropos to Matchpoints than IMPs.

1NT may seem strange here by West, but Opener is often
embarassed by negative doubles in this manner. In fact, a 1NT
rebid by Opener opposite a negative double promises NEITHER a
stopper in their suit OR a balanced holding -- as THIS deal
illustrates.

As West, many would choose to bid directly over 1H; either
2D or a double would seem reasonable. When PARTNER doubles in
direct seat over the 2H raise, though, West MUST drive to game as
a matter of partnership trust--without which psyches such as South's
1H opening bid will always work against us.

KALTICA "stepped out" on this one. Over the game-forcing 2NT
reply, South knew that the first two undertricks "didn't count". If
North had had C-Kxx and NOTHING else, the possibility existed that
E-W might make slam without a club lead. And if North could provide
a SINGLE trick on OFFENCE, 3C would fail by only 2. But North had,
in fact, the "nightmare" hand: virtually WORTHLESS on OFFENCE, but
two solid tricks on DEFENCE. :(

Prevailing opinion is that the Club suit itself becomes
problemmatic in forcing 1C systems. Without the natural 1C opening,
such methods must open 2C whenever they have 6+ Clubs (or 5 Clubs
and a 4-card second suit). This hand challenges this assumption.
Here, South knew immediately N-S had a massive club fit from the
natural 2C opening bid. Hence, South could cuebid 3S to invite
slam--an invitation which North ACCEPTED with 4NT. Nice bidding!

Here, South did NOT know that N-S had a great Club fit. 2S
immediately over 1S might imply a 5th Club in the SOUTH hand. Bear
in mind that THIS North's opening bid showed THREE or more Clubs,
not FIVE or more. South might have gambled with another double of
2S in the passout seat, but was worried about North JUMPING in
Hearts.

This hand was an interesting contrast in hand evaluation.
Here, West viewed hir hand as a PRE-EMPT, and seemed quite happy
to be risk down two until it became evident that the S-AK and
the C-Ace provided enough to beat any game contract by N-S if East
could NOT fit with the Spade suit. This is why I strongly recommend
that we tend not to pre-empt with the AK of our long suit, and NEVER
with 2 Aces. West simply has TOO MUCH DEFENCE. As West, I would
consider it a shame to have to take a minus score with such a fine
hand...and would overcall 1D with ONE Spade.

Here, West viewed hir has a STRONG one, rather than a weak
hand. 2S, then, was strongly invitational without being forcing.
This is a FAR BETTER appreciation of the West hand's assets. 3S
also has the advantage of INCLUDING East in the decision regarding
the feasibility of 4S. Two heads are better than one. :)

One of best known truisms in bridge is "the 5 level belongs
to the opponents". In 5H, N-S take the maximum risk (of going down)
for the minimum reward (i.e. no slam bonus). Usually, then, it is
correct to leave them in 5H. As it happens, on THIS hand 5S would
be a paying proposition even if N-S were to go on to 6H, forcing
E-W to find the sacrifice in 6S, doubled, for down 2 (-500).

Looking only at the E-W hands, though, I would be HAPPY
to defend 5H or 6H here.

East's 5S bid here worked out very well, finding a good
sacrifice against 5H. RODDY no doubt saw 5S as a good 2-way bid
(in that if it doesn't make, it may be a good sacrifice. The
question arises, though: had N-S been pushed into 6H here, would
E-W have then sacrificed in 6S? Very hard to say. :(
