Space Cadets versus Uppercuts
back to
Home Planet
Recent connection problems with Maynard and Wintaka caused us to expect our match against the UpperCut team from New Zealand to be a net nightmare. Our fears turned out to be ungrounded. Our opponents turned out to be great players and even greater people. The only "snag" was that the match started at 5:00 A.M. Pacific time. Some of our players, including me, needed a crash cart to wake up that early!
Sadly, our table crashed after the other table had finished all the boards in the second half--just as Wintaka and I were setting 3S for +200. Kenny Sired had already left and we now had to replay the last four boards. Unmitigated disaster ensured. We lost 35 unanswered IMPs in an absolute fiasco to lose by 25.
The comments that you see between the hands are intended for Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as you enjoy these records of the decisive hands in this match.

This hand is a lesson in "trap passing". As North, I can
and will double ANYTHING they run to over 1S-Dble. I do
NOT need my partner's help in this regard. So why would
I redouble and warn the opponents of the trouble they
are in? For all I know, West might foolishly RAISE East!
I PASSed the double so as to not let the "cat out of the
bag". Note also the DUCK of the Heart Jack, to retain my
Heart position over Declarer. This was bloody!
"But why did partner open 1S?", you may ask. Well, OUR
partnership doesn't open weak 2-bids, so we have agreed
to open QUITE LIGHT with a good 5+card major.

Partner's more-or-less-negative double was all I needed to
hear to bid 4S. I counted my losers (2 Hearts and a Diamond),
graciously conceded them, drew trump and claimed. Notice
the importance of establishing Diamonds before drawing
trumps. I need to guard against East having a singleton
Diamond--as he did! I also need to be able to draw trumps
ENDING UP IN MY HAND to enjoy the good Diamonds.

Cashing the Spade King at trick 3 turned out fatal here!
Here, instead of returning a Diamond at trick 6, West led
a Spade back. Had North NOT led the S-King at trick 3 he
could now come to the Spade King, ruff a Diamond (to get
them established) and then S-Q and a Spade to the North
	hand to enjoy those Diamonds.
Remember: PROTECT & RETAIN those entries to your long suit!

N-S were playing a forcing 1C, so 1H was limited to 15 HCPs.
With a maximum, South made one natural move towards game
and then stopped in 3H. South COULD have had a much better
hand here. Not so at the other table...

Here North makes a very poor choice moving towards game. As
N-S play their raises, 2H was DESTRUCTIVE, showing 6-8 HCPs.
2S was the beginning of a "Feature Show", with South's 2NT
showing a SPADE honour. 3D asked for a Diamond honour (i.e. Ace,
King or Queen), which 3H denied.
Frankly, I had no business even entertaining thoughts of
	game here! :(
In 3H, at IMPs, I took careful note of the H-8 at trick 3
and played "safe" by ducking the 2nd round of Hearts to
East, in case Hearts were 4-1 onside.

The was one of two costly mis-mouses by the Space Cadets.
Obviously, East meant to bid only 2H here. :(
Maynard's Diamond duck at trick two was very unfortunate.
Had he thought about it longer, he would have seen that
the Heart switch by North is an obvious one. Therefore,
North's failure to get rid of Dummy's one trump must
	indicate a singleton Diamond.

Here Declarer correctly read the D-5 as a singleton (why else
would I risk letting him ruff a Club loser with dummy's only
trump?), rose with the D-Ace and got out for down one by
ruffing his Club loser. I guess I should have returned a
	trump. :(
	Nicely played, Sonden!

West's falsecard of the Diamond Queen at trick 7 convinced
East that he had to save his Diamonds and pitch his crucial
Clubs. West was trying to convince Declarer to give up on
Diamonds. There was some discussion afterwards as to whether
West SHOULD falsecard and whether East should BELIEVE such
a falsecard. The debate continues... :)
Why, though, does the D-K constitute a "false" card ?
Because ON DEFENCE you LEAD your highest of touching
honours, but play the LOWEST of touching honours when
	NOT on lead.
While we're on the subject of touching honours: ON OFFENCE
Declarer should ALWAYS play the HIGHEST of touching honours
EXCEPT when trying to discourage an opponent from covering
(in which case play the SECOND highest of touching honours).

Here is the 2nd costly mis-mouse. At trick 5 South MEANT to
cover the C-9 with the Queen, with the idea of conceding
a trick to the C-10 later while establishing the C-7 as
his tenth trick. Nice plan. Too bad about the mis-mouse.

Nevertheless, NEITHER Declarer took the safest and best
line of play: draw NO trumps until South has ruffed a Club
and a Heart. THEN draw trumps and claim!

With no fit for East's Clubs, West wisely passes 3C. Well done!
Notice that E-W have 24 HCPs and MANY distributional points, too.
But points are not the point. A *fit* is the point! :)

I always advise beginners to AVOID pre-empting with the
Ace of the long suit, since if partner has a singleton
that Ace is worth TWO tricks against any suit contract.
West should bid ONE Diamond here. If you ARE going to
pre-empt, though, 4D is about right, given the fact
that THEY are vulnerable and 1C was strong & forcing.

In our system a double of 4D by North would have shown
8+ HCPs. South MIGHT have guessed to re-open with a
double here, but 18 HCPs is not much more than the 16
he promised with his artificial 1C opening.

In 3NT South should IMMEDIATELY play the C-AQ in the hopes
that someone will win the King and set up dummy's Clubs
while the D-Ace is still on the board. Notice his play of
a SMALL spade from his hand at trick 7. This is a nice
safety play, since it ensures the contract whenever spades
are 4-1 and retains dummy's 3rd spade as an exit card
	back to his hand.

The North hand shows us one of the drawbacks of playing a
strong 1C. The Club suit is awkward to bid. Often
strong clubbers like these two will bastardize their
1D opening bids, too, to compensate.
Here JaneF makes a nice 4-card 1S overcall and sails
into the "par" contract of 3NT.

My 2C opening showed 11-15 with long clubs. Having made

forward-going action. My takeout double of 2H here

1C was strong, 2C was a game-forcing response. So how do

Notice how South's 5D bid (after supporting Hearts) helps

matter on THIS hand, though, since the mirrored E-W

But pre-empts don't ALWAYS work, especially when you have
a double fit. South has to realize that his hand is GOLD
for partner: no wasted values in Spades, no losers in
Clubs and good Diamond cards over the negative doubler.
He should bid 5D, as Wintaka did at the other table.

In our methods, Wintaka's double of 2C showed defensive
values in support of Spades. This warns me NOT to bid
4-of-a-major unless I think I can make it!

You will notice that NEITHER North used Michaels with this
5-5 major 2-suiter. Why not? Because the Spades are so
much stronger than the Hearts. If North were only to get
ONE chance to bid, which suit does he want lead? SPADES!
By bidding a Michaels 2D, North might be forcing South
to guess which suit to lead.
	Remember two things:
	1. When the HIGHER ranked suit is stronger, bid those
		suits NATURALLY.
	2. When the LOWER ranked suit is stronger, use the
2-suited overcall (be it Michaels or an Unusual
2NT). Hence, when you use such a 2-suited overcall
the Lower Of the Two is Usually the Stronger. This
		tendency is called "LOTUS".

This long and impressive auction showed 5-2-3-3 distribution
and 22-23 HCPs with EIGHT "controls" (a King is worth 1 such
control, any Ace is worth 2 controls). E-W's problem is
	that 23 + 6 HCPs doesn't get his side anywhere NEAR 6NT!
We mustn't be "blinded by the beauty of our weapons", as
Leonard Cohen would say. Gadgets are meant to AUGMENT
our judgement, not REPLACE it! :)

Wintaka was "kicking himself" for not ducking the Diamond
at trick 2. Had he done so we'd have beaten this THREE.
But it was HARDLY worth the risk. :)

Declarer did VERY WELL to pin South's S-J with the S-Q!

With Clubs being bid on his left, OneDown should devalue
the Club King. The problem with balancing via a double
is that on any hand where partner can make THREE of
anything she will undoubtedly and correctly bid FOUR
of them...counting on West to hold a better hand.

You don't see too many 20 IMP swings! West should NOT
double 5H in front of partner, who would have taken the
sacrifice/save in 5S in a heartbeat had 5H come around
to her. West should pass 5H or bid 5S himself.
Remember: an abundance of trumps (Spades here) is good
for offence but bad for defence.

West's 3H psychic bid worked beautifully against me here. I
passed the "natural, forcing" 3H, intending to bid 4H LATER
to expose the psyche. But over 4S I must do it at the 5-level.
Instead, I erred and bid 5C. Then I sat for the double rather
than risk 5H! Not my finest hour. :(

Psychics are quite common in serious competitive bridge, less
so in beginner games. Nevertheless, they ARE an integral
part of the game, just as falsecards are.

Remember: to expose a psyche of a FORCING natural bid
simply pass and bid the suit the next round (as I FAILED
	to do here).

Both East and West strained to bid here, and the "Hawaii"
(i.e. 5-0) trump break punished them to the maximum. :(

Debs devalued her hand here, declining West's invitation to
4S. She has the worst distribution in bridge (3-3-3-4), no
Aces and THREE Jacks for her 8 HCPs.

South made two errors here: he threw away the D-Jack (never
signal with a trick) and he did NOT support partner's
Diamonds. Had he done so he may well have had a crack at 4S.

At trick two I made a mistake not playing the NINE of Diamonds,
but it did not occur to me that partner could have D-KJ4 and
I wanted to signal for a Club return if partner was RUFFING
	the 2nd round of Diamonds.
