This was an "in-between" match for the Space Cadets, coming two
days before their important challenge matches against the ScissorTails
and the North Stars. Colin ("Kaltica") was
out of town that weekend. Thus strengthened, the Space Cadets blitzed
to a nearly insurmountable lead at the half.
The comments that you see between the hands are intended for
Kaltica's students. Indented comments are Colin's, those
preceeded by ">>>" are Bill Treble's. Please ignore them as
you enjoy these records of the decisive hands in this match.

The free 3H bid here is called a "re-raise". Most people play
it as pre-emptive (for some reason) in competition. As such,
it does NOT invite 4H.
>>> A slight mixup for the good guys here. Maynard intended his reraise
to 3H as PREEMPTIVE, trying to make it difficult for the opponents to find
a fit (as they have in diamonds here). He would have bid a new suit if he
really wanted to try for game. Wintaka, in the absence of discussion,
assumed 3H was a game try asking for good trumps, the treatment he plays
with Kaltica.

>>>Wintaka got this board off to a rousing start with a feather light
takeout double (9 HCP, 3 for singleton adding up to 12). West's 2S
raise suffered from the dual fault of being short on high cards AND
encouraging partner to sacrifice against the only contract he can
actually defend, hearts. South's second double seems strange, but
you cannot really make a penalty double at your next turn after a
takeout double at your first action. He was merely saying that he
did not have extra values to go on to the five level. Of course
North, with four trumps was always opting to defend in any case.

problem.

Here is a familiar theme: having just scored a huge number
against the opponents North immediately tries to cede it
back.
>>>Maynard pulled a Kaltica here, sailing in with a 3C opening in
3rd seat on the heels of a plus 1400 on the previous board. Perhaps
Colin was playing on Maynard's account :}}. Note that if North even
has a SIXTH club, he will get out for 500 or 800 versus the opps
vulnerable game.

This time, however, Ksired and Rbrough--two of the luckiest
players on the planet--combine resources to bid and make
this 34% slam. Notice East's careful 6D bid. A lazy 6H
by him would have gone down one on the 4-2 Heart break.
Remember: always keep your options open, giving partner
a choice whenever possible.
>>> In true Cadet fashion, our partners cover our butts by coping
with a barrage of interference to reach 6D. South's 2H was a weak
two in either major and North's 3H was preemptive, willing to play
in hearts or spades. East's double showed heart length, leading
to West's 4H bid. Rbrough now risked 4S, leading to an exchange
of black suit cuebids and the final 6D contract. Well done, boys!

Instructional texts always show a dubious action working out
badly. The conservative course of PASSing is rarely
criticized. Here, Maynard would have helped his cause by
DOUBLING the artificial 2S call (2S showed minor suit length).
Was it worth the risk, though? Perhaps, perhaps not.
>>> West's 2S was a transfer to clubs. Maynard, with only 4 spades,
could not risk a lead directing double. As a result, South led a
heart against 5C and declarer simply drove out the ace of diamonds,
giving him enough spade pitches on red suit winners to bring the
contract home.

The 2H rebid served to steer South AWAY from the killing Heart
lead against 3NT (which would have prematurely killed the H-K
entry to those Clubs).
>>> Rbrough and ksired get to 3NT on a stayman sequence, but easts 2H rebid
deters jox from finding the devastating heart lead which deprives dummy of
its only entry to the club suit. On the actual spade salvo, rbrough has no
trouble wrapping up ten tricks.

This is the most instructive hand of this set. Rather than a
lazy 2S raise, West made good use of bidding space to show the
DIAMOND suit. NOW if the opponents were to venture to 3NT
RBrough would have NO PROBLEM finding the killing Diamond
switch. This, of course, prevented the opponents from bidding
3NT in the first place, but it is cheap insurance against
the 430 at the other table.

RBrough made this hand despite EXCELLENT defence. Jox underled
the C-A in a desperate attempt to get his partner on play for
a trump lead. When in with each Black King North dutifully
led a trump. At trick seven--much to the consternation of the
opponents--he correctly guessed the Clubs. How? RBrough
reasoned that North would be FAR LESS reluctant to lead Clubs
back from C-Kxx than from C-KJx.

The time to balance is when the opponents HAVE found a good fit.
Balancing when they have NOT found a good fit often amounts to
either RESCUING the opponents from disaster or incurring
disaster ourselves. Here South was LUCKY to get out for -200.

Here again we see the value of a "top-of-nothing" S-10 lead over
the obscure S-7. Seeing the S-10, East would have won the S-Ace
and quickly switched to a HEART.
RBrough could have made his job a LITTLE easier by OVERCALLING
2S. Then, if the opponents leap off to 3NT, he would know that
they are WELL PREPARED for the Spade lead. That would lead him
to a RED suit lead and, from North's lack of curiousity about
a 4-4 Heart fit, a likely HEART lead.

Wintaka should have DUCKED the H-K lead here so as to sever
communications between the defenders. On the Heart continuation
East can then drive out the C-AK without seeing the opponents
run the Heart suit.

South has a King too much to pre-empt here. Better to overcall
simply with 1S. 3S worked well here, though, since the
opponents can make 3C if left to their own devices.

Memory's 1C opening bid on 15 flat HCPs is correct here: these
two Jacks will NOT pull their wieght in most contract. Notice
East's inventive 1NT overcall, with 5-3 in the majors. Well
done, Harpaz!

Here we see a very good illustration of the necessity of
switching horses in midstream. North plunked down the H-K
looking for a Heart ruff. Seeing the C-4 on dummy and his
own C-Q1052, he quickly switched to a trump to prevent
THEM (i.e. dummy) from getting in any game-going ruffs.
>>> An instructive hand on defense. North finds the killing trump
shift after the H-K lead. When in with the Ace of Clubs, South
must shift to diamonds as the defense has no hope if North doesn't
hold the ace. Unfortunately, Rbrough forgot he had enough trumps
to crossruff clubs and hearts and draw trumps after establishing his
side suit. :{

South should lead a trump here. She had the benefit of knowing
that the West hand was 2-suited and that East had made a very
tepid preference to 2S. A good hand to illustrate the Theory
of Reluctant Choice (i.e. when one opponent has made a reluctant
choice between partner's long suits, LEAD TRUMPS to cut down
on the ruffing in the short hand).
>>>Here the defense was done for after the reasonable diamond lead,
as North's hand was deprived of the entry for a second trump play.
