This was an important match for the Space Cadets, as it gave us
a chance to rise from 21st to 5th! We waited 7 weeks for this match
and we might have had to wait an additional month! The ScissorTail
Captain, Don Newman, was not able to play.
It was a pleasant match, with our opponents showing great patience
with my partner's considerable connection problems. An odd denouement:
down 51-8 at the half the opponents did not bother to return to either
table, conceding the match without a word!
The comments that you see between the hands are intended for
Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as
you enjoy these records of the decisive hands in this match.

If the opponents have the minors, WE must have the majors. This
explains my 4H bid. I expected to hear 5-of-a-minor but there
were no "takers". Notice that the persistent Diamond plays,
short-ruffing the hand with the strong Hearts, would beat 4H
even if the Club King and Heart Jack were ONSIDE.
A poor start for the Space Cadets.

Ksired could have actually MADE this one. At trick 8 he COULD
have exited a SPADE to West, who would have been endplayed into
leading a Heart. Of course, KSired didn't know that West had
started with 4 Hearts, so this would have been far too
prescient. :(

Here we see RBrough apply the Steinitz Dictum: "Never interrupt
the opponents while they're making a mistake." 5S sounded
invitational, so RBrough waited for his ship to come in. Sure
enough, 6S came rolling around. This was one of Dave's FIRMER
doubles. The less said about the East-West bidding, the better.

Always show your partner a second suit in preference to rebidding
such a ratty 6-carder. I actually MISPLAYED this one: I should
NOT play a second round of trumps. Instead, I should lead the
H-2 to the H-10 and IMMEDIATELY play a Spade towards my strength.
This would leave some Hearts on Dummy to ruff my Spades.
As it was, I had to ELIMINATE South's Spades, Hearts and Diamonds
so that she would have to concede the last trick to Dummy's C-Q. :)

West should rise with the C-A at trick 8 here. Declarer has
won SIX Diamond tricks and a Spade at this point. The Ace
of Hearts will mean an eighth trick. A Club would mean 9.
West, therefore, MUST stomp with the C-A and hope partner
has enough Spade tricks to beat this contract.

My double of 3D was a "defensive double", meaning that I had
defensive values and Spade support. It was forcing to 3S.
But 3H by me INSTEAD of the defensive double would have meant
the same thing, while calling for a HEART lead. From this
(NONE of which is standard, BTW) partner discerned that my
strength would be in CLUBS! He duly led the C-3. Worried
that West held C-A6 and could ruff a third round of Clubs,
North ROSE with the Club King at trick two. This meant
that our Club Queen became the setting trick! :)

Newcomers to the game are taught to count losers based on the
assumption that LHO is always going to be on lead. This, in
effect, counts QUICK LOSERS and a few of the hand's SLOW LOSERS
only. TRUE LOSERS (also known as "BORN LOSERS")
are counted by assuming only that partner has a yarborough with nothing
more than hir share of small cards in this suit. For example, the
South hand's H-KQ982 should be counted as two true losers, since
North's "share" of the outstanding 8 Hearts is (8 / 3 = 2.66,
rounded up to 3) THREE. This South hand, then, has a Spade, 2 Heart,
1 Diamond and two Club losers for a total of SIX. Thus, she
is three tricks short of a 2C opening bid using the "BORN LOSER"
COUNT. In my experience, the BORN LOSER COUNT is a far more
accurate appraisal of any opening hand. Add Opener's Born Losers to
Responder's Cover Cards, add a "transportation" trick if Responder
has two or more such Cover Cards as entries, and you will have a
reasonable assessment of any hand's potential.

Fortunately for South, North PASSED the FORCING bid of 3H!
Otherwise, they'd have been in SERIOUS trouble.

Here, instead of ATTACKING Hearts, Declarer embarked on a plan
to PITCH Hearts! This is directly contrary to the "Fisher
Philosophy": "KEEP winners, THROW losers!"
Note that, without partner supporting the Heart suit, West knows
better than to lead the suit. Another example of "lead discovery"
(i.e. BIDDING a suit in order to discern whether it is safe to
LEAD the suit). Also, note that Declarer can afford to have the
defence ruff a Heart, since it allows him to draw trumps in only
TWO rounds, retaining more Spades to ruff Dummy's Diamonds.

Kenny knew that the opponents could ruff a Diamond or two. For
this reason, he panicked and played H-AK rather than the finesse.
The flaw in this logic was that, if the Diamonds break 4-1, he
is left with 3 diamond losers WITHOUT a ruff! A Heart finesse
would allow him to make 2H on THIS layout and protect him
against a 4-1 Heart break in other layouts.
And what of the Diamond ruffs? The general rule is that if
the opponents didn't negotiate their ruffs at the get-go, there
is little reason to believe that they will find it later. :)

East should have MADE this one. He correctly attacked his Club
length, noting the C-10 from North. But instead of CONTINUING
with Clubs, hoping North would RUFF the third round (and pitching
a loser otherwise) of Clubs, he rested his hopes on a 2-2
Diamond break.
Had he played the third Club, saw North REFUSE to ruff and
THEN follow to a second round of trumps, Wintaka would then
KNOW to finesse in Diamonds -- confident that North would
have no reason to refuse to ruff the boss Club with D-xx.

3H was an "are you for real" bid, checking to see if North REALLY
has a free 2H bid in direct seat. With flat 2-2-3 distribution
in the non-Heart suits and a poorish 16-count, North wisely passed.
The diamond lead cost the defence one trick. Playing the C-10
at trick 10 promoted North's C-9 for his 9th trick. Second hand

I actually should have BEATEN 2H here. Note the theme: West
can keep Declarer off dummy PERMANENTLY. East got off to the
best lead: a passive trump. At trick 4 I should have played
back a Spade rather than "finesse myself" in Diamonds.
Stranded repeatedly in his hand, North would EVENTUALLY lose
three Clubs, a Heart, a Spade and a Diamond for down one!
