Space Cadets versus LA Raiders
back to
Home Planet
The Space Cadets played LA Raiders in two installments on consecutive Thursdays. The first half saw the Space Cadets in very poor form. The second half saw only two Space Cadets show up, but they and their fill-ins, Srnkvist and Revdisc, played quite well. Unfortunately, the hands "flattened out" and there weren't 33 IMPs to be recovered. Oh, well, a comeback is a comeback!
The comments that you see between the hands are intended for Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as you enjoy these records of the decisive hands in this match.

West's 3H bid is slightly understrength here. East, worried
about missing 7H opposite a possible H-AKQxx(x) and D-Ace, should
have chosen 4NT, Blackwood, over 3S. But all roads will lead to
6H here. Unfortunately, trumps were not 2-2 and the stiff H-Queen
did not pop up. Technically, West should cash the Heart Ace
before playing the Diamond--in case the stiff H-Q appears on
his left. In the actual case, North could have beaten the
contract legitimately by executing a "Merrimac Coup", returning
the C-KING to remove the C-Ace entry to dummy before trumps
are drawn.

Had the stiff H-Q appeared in North's hand, of course, he
can simply play Diamonds until South ruffs. :(

West's hand is, frankly, too strong for a weak 2-bid. Had
the 52.5% Heart slam made, we would understand why. East simply
cannot envision slam chances opposite a normal weak 2-bid. Better
to PASS and bid aggressively LATER, say, by responding 1H and
then jump rebidding 3H.

Note what RBrough did at trick 2 here: in with the S-Queen
he IMMEDIATELY played a Club. This guaranteed him a Diamond pitch
when he entered dummy with the S-Ace or a Diamond ruff. He then
conceded a Diamond trick, two trumps and the C-Ace, making 3H.
Well played, Dave!

Kaltica's S-King at first glance looks disastrous. Certainly
a trump lead and Spade return would have settled Declarer's bacon
immediately. But, if you ARE going to lead partner's Spade suit,
the S-K is your choice here. North now thought that he might
never get back to dummy, and therefore did not bother setting up
the Diamond pitch on the Clubs. He tried a Diamond, hoping we
wouldn't play a trump.

Still, a Club is the best play at trick two. He can always
play Diamonds from his hand, and ruffing the third round of
Diamonds might allow him to re-enter Dummy. If not, the defence
may be forced to lead trumps for him, perhaps limiting his trump
losers to one.

Never open 1S with 4-4 in the majors. If you aren't going to
open 1H, open your better minor. Opening 1S and rebidding 2H shows
5+ Spades, not 4...even if you are playing a 4-card major system (as
N-S were). Had North opened either rounded suit the pair would have
had no problem reaching game in No Trump.

RBrough must have switched his hand with West during this
auction. :(

With 5 of his HCPs in partner's suit, 3-card Heart support
AND a doubleton RBrough should bid 2H, not 1NT, regardless of
whether they are playing 4-card majors or not. Once 2H came
around to him, RBrough was "WHOBbed" (i.e. Wrong Hand of Bid).
He was not strong enough for 3H. KSired, meanwhile, needed to
hear his Hearts being supported before he could re-evaluate
his hand upwards. Had North had, say, West's hand, 2H might
have been the limit of the hand!

Vulnerable, West should have passed this one out. The chances
of E-W emerging with a plus score here is minimal: with any hand
strong enough to make a 1-level contract East is likely to push on
to the 2-level or higher. :(

In 2S, West has to play the C-King at trick two in order to
pitch a Diamond loser. North made a nice deceptive play, switching
to D-Ace and another Diamond at trick 3. Fearing a Diamond ruff,
Wintaka rose with the D-King at trick 4. Because he had not
unblocked the C-King, he could not even pitch a Diamond loser
on the C-Ace. Too bad. Had he played to make by finessing the
D-Jack at trick 4 after getting his C-King out of the way, we
actually could have MADE +110 here and pushed the board! :(

Even playing 4-card majors, North should open 1D here. The
Diamond suit is quite biddable, and 1D follows the "rule of
anticipation": by bidding the suit BELOW the shortness (i.e. the
doubleton Heart in this example) Opener is prepared with a rebid
(i.e. 1S here) over the anticipated Heart response. But all
roads lead to 1NT for N-S here, since over 1D:1H:1S North will
likely rebid 1NT anyway.

I would assume that E-W had a partnership misunderstanding here.
2NT was Jacoby, showing a good supporting hand for Hearts and asking
for a short suit. 4C in *standard* practice would show a 2nd suit,
in which case West has a GREAT hand with fitting C-AQ83. East,
however, seemed to think that if 3C showed a singleton, 4C must
show a void! (In standard Jacoby methods, 3C followed by 4C would
show a Club void.)

Thinking that he had a wonderful fit for both round suits,
West proceeded with a 4D cuebid as was delighted to hear his
partner cuebid in Spades. It's a good thing West didn't consider
7H here! Instead, he "signed off" in 6C (the more balanced fit).
Not liking his Club support, East corrected to 6H.

North's S-King switch at trick 3 make look odd here but was,
in fact, a very good play. North knew that his ONLY chance of
beating 4H here was to find South with the S-Ace. Two Spades,
the H-Ace and a Heart ruff would have done the trick. :(

At the other table KSired considered 2NT, too, but opted
instead for a more natural 2C. The problem with 2NT is that
partner will expect some SPADE support. Without it, the South
hand cannot provide a source of length tricks. :(

Should South bid 3NT here? At IMPs, certainly. The
Heart 10-spot should tip the balance in favour of game.

E-W stopped on a dime here in 4C. Yes, 4H happens to make,
but the odds are only 36% on the required 3-3 Heart split, and
one should have at least a 38% chance of making a vulnerable game
before bidding it--and that is if the alternative is down one!
Here, if Heart break badly 4H rates to go down MANY after East
is short-ruffed in Spades or Diamonds.

Kaltica "over-competed" here. He was influenced by the
double fit in Diamonds and Spades his way. But the 5C bid
should warn him that N-S have too many Heart losers here.

The 5C bid should also alert East to the necessity of
switching to HEARTS at trick two. South would have MADE
5D had he guessed to play the D-King here. Instead, South
reasoned that the Diamond length would be on his left,
making it more likely that West had the D-Q. :(

Remember: a 2-level new suit free bid over a takeout double
is NOT forcing. Only a 1-level new suit free bid over a takeout
double is forcing (for 1 round).

Question: "Why didn't South open 1NT with 15-17 flat?"

Answer: Because it is a minimal 1NT opener concentrated
in SPADES. South wants a Spade lead. He will pass partner's
possible 1NT reply in comfort and drive to 3NT over any 2-over-1
reply. It is also easier for partner to bid over a takeout
double--as we see here.

Question: "But how does this jive with current 5-card major
theory?"

Answer: It doesn't. But it is reasonably good TACTICALLY. :)

One needs 33 points for 6NT. Give the South hand an extra
point for the fifth Club to bring it to 20 points. KSired was a
passed hand, and therefore could not have 13 points. 20 + 12 < 33.

South was protecting a healthy lead here and assumed that *we*
would be in slam at the other table, hoping for a swing from a lucky
make. As long as both pairs are in the same contract it would be
very difficult for us to make headway.

Here RaviVenk made a better decision that our North player.
The C-109 are IMPORTANT cards here. With C-Axxx the hand would
belong in Hearts. But those excellent Club spots give the North
hand a second stopper in Clubs. With no suit to worry about,
North chose the 9-trick game over the 10 trick 4H game.

4H is a vastly inferior contract to 3NT, given the Club spots.
Still, 4H is cold, providing North retains trump control. Winning
the diamond lead in dummy, he led the H-10. Good so far, but then,
when West covered the H-10 with the H-Q, North must DUCK it! Then,
he has to play C-Ace, ruff a Club (for his 10th trick) with the
H-Jack and then finesse the H-9. The fortunate Heart holding
allows 4H to make. With the threat of a Diamond ruff, there
doesn't seem to be any other way to make 4H. :(

This is a very difficult hand in that it is not entirely
clear that ALL other lines of play will fail.

I am amazed that the same auction happened at BOTH tables
here! South's 2NT bid was a semi-psyche, hoping to buy the hand
in 2NT or 3D. Partner took it seriously, though, and raised to
game...with a most unpromising hand.

West would have done much better to lead hir partner's
Heart suit here. The Club lead handed Declarer a tempo with
which to attack Diamonds. South should have lead a SMALL
Diamond from dummy, since Coz later said that s/he was thinking
about STOMPING on the first round of Diamonds with hir D-Ace!
Remember: PLAY SMALL towards BIG !

When in with the D-King, West had another chance to
lead hir partner's Heart suit, but chose instead to play on
Spades. This second tempo allowed Declarer to fully
establish the Diamonds and escape for down one.

South made the same devious/deviant 2NT bid as at the other
other table. And, again, North was fooled into raising to 3NT.
Revdisc, however, led his side's long Spade suit and beat 3NT
to a pulp. Well done!

What a horrendous contract to bid...and make!

Again, West refused to lead or continue hir long suit here.
Nevertheless, 6H is in no danger of making. Note that on the
9th trick East pitched the D-Q, telling partner that s/he was
taking care of Diamonds. Instead of pitching his D-98 though,
West threw away all of his Clubs...and so did East. It's not
often an 8-spot takes the first trick in a suit when it is
the highest card that pair owns! :)

Note also that even a 2nd Diamond at trick two would
beat the contract, since it would remove the entry to dummy
for the pseudo-squeeze.

I think RaviVenk should bid 5H here. Had Hearts split 3-1
and the Diamonds were switched around 5C would have made. Given
the number of Hearts South has shown here, 5H would have been
a good two-way bid: on many hands where 5H goes down one 5C
would make!
