Space Cadets versus Northern Stars

Home Planet
The 15th place Space Cadets challenged the 3rd place Northern Stars. This was a very pleasant match between friends. Again, our side dropped behind early but staged a remarkable comeback attempt, failing in the end when a grand slam happened to fail. Oh, well...

Ward's Rule #13 states: "Everyone psyches the same
amount...but not everyone KNOWS when they've psyched!" :)

East certainly did a LOT of bidding on these 5 points!
Having stretched to make a negative double 1D to show the
majors, East should leave future competitive decisions up
to West. Even if guided by the Law of Total Tricks, which
states that E-W should compete up to the number of Hearts
they own between them, East should bid the nine trick
contract of 3H, not 4H. THEN, if E-W limp up to 4H, N-S
MIGHT risk letting E-W play in 4H.

Another strange auction! West's 2C opening showed 11-15
HCPs, 5+ Clubs and a 4-card major OR 6+ Clubs. Newfydoc never
dreamt that the 2D balancing bid would propel the enemy into
4H -- and that 4H might MAKE!

Having guessed to play the H-Ace at trick 4, noting the
H-Jack from South, Wintaka should lead the H-10 and DUCK it.
The Theory of Restricted Choice states that a doubleton H-QJ
is only half as likely as a stiff H-Jack. Even those of us
who do NOT subscribe to the Theory concede that a 3-1 break
is 25% more likely than a 2-2 break. East should finesse
the H-10 here to make 4H. :(

Here again we see East have to guess if an opponent (North,
in this case) started with H-J or H-QJ. Here, though, East has
to consider the fact tht South switched to a Heart at trick 3.
Would South have done so from H-Qxx? Unlikely. And, since 4H
will NOT make if South had started with H-Qxxx, he MUST assume
that North has the H-Q and PLAY FOR THE DROP.

Having misguessed TWO game contracts at this point, E-W
would have been DELIGHTED to know that they were EVEN at this
stage of the match! :)

Some might suggest that, at IMPs, North should rebid 2D here.
That might be safer than 1NT, and safety is very important at IMPs.
I happen to think that passing 1NT was very reasonable, since it
denies West another chance to bid one of those 5-card majors.
With S-Kx and a partner whose 1NT response DENIED a 4+card
major, North *knows* the opponents have at least one 8-card
major suit fit.

In the play, North should NOT use the critical Spade entries
to finesse in Diamonds. Rather, North should play Diamonds from
hand IMMEDIATELY after winning the 3rd trick. Still down one
(at least!) seems inevitable. :(

1C is artificial and forcing for 1 round in E-W's methods.
N-S were playing CRASH (Color, RAnk, SHape, whereby double shows
2 suits of the same Color, 1D would show 2 suits of the same
Rank, and 1H would show two suits of the same SHape: round--Hs
and Cs--or pointed--Ds and Ss.) over the 16+HCP 1C opening, so
the double showed 2 suits of the same COLOR. West's PASS
showed 0-7 HCPs and 3+Clubs. 1S was a nice stop, with Opener
reasoning that even if Responder is MAXIMAL (7 pts.) game
will not make opposite a flat 17 HCPs.

Many newcomers ask: "Hey, if so many experienced
players play Forcing 1C systems like Precision, why shouldn't
we be learning that instead of SAYC?" After all, Forcing 1C
systems are not NECESSARILY more complex than SAYC (although
the Canadian Club featured here certainly is!). The answer
is that SAYC is the "esperanto" or common language of
North American bidding, and 50% of the world's bridge
players are North American!

Miriam Botzum (QofH on OKBridge) wrote a brilliant article
demonstrating why many experienced pairs play DONT over 1NT at
IMPs, but switch to CAPP at matchpoints. The basic reason is
that at IMPs one should aim for the cheapest contract. A DONT
2D here would have been a winner, showing Diamonds and a major.
A CAPP 2H overcall gets the partnership too high in 3D. Sure,
2D might not score as well as 2H if both make, but is the
safer course of action if disaster looms. Myself, I prefer
DONT to CAPP, but prefer BROZEL or McGuinty to either of them.

The Rule of 11 applies whenever opening leader begins with
their fourth best card in a suit. Subtract the number on the
spot card (6 here) from 11 and you can determine how many cards
ABOVE that spot-card (the 6 here) are OUTSIDE of opening leader's
hand. The S-Q, S-9, and the S-K7 in East's hand are FOUR of
these 5 cards. Hence, East can safely play LOW here, knowing
that MAYNARD (Declarer) as ONE card above the S-6. When in with
the D-King the defence can now cash their black suit winners.

Declarer must play either the S-9 or S-Q at trick one,
the former being the winning play.

In SAYC 1S:2S shows 6-10 HCPs. 2/1 players use a "constructive"
raise whereby 1S:2S shows 8-10 HCPs. With 6-7, Responder starts with
a forcing 1NT response and then raises Spades. The problem with this
arrangement is that the 2S bid could also be a meek preference with
only 2 Spades. Also, 1NT might be the last makeable spot, and is
the best place to play many partscores--especially at MatchPoints.

In the Canadian Club, a direct raise to 2S is DESTRUCTIVE,
showing 6-8 HCPs. With a CONSTRUCTIVE raise, Responder bids an
artificial "Toddler" 2D and, over a minimum-showing 2H, rebids
2S. Still, East's hand was 1 HCP too strong for this sequence.
E-W were very happy to have stopped on a dime in 2S here, until
they found out what happened at the other table.

One of the other disadvantages of a forcing 1NT response to
1H or 1S is that partner's rebid (2D here) can't really be taken
seriously, in that it is often a temporizing bid with 3-card
length. East took the 2D bid seriously enough to bid 3NT here.
South had to find a DIAMOND lead to beat 3NT! Hard to find. :(

showing cuebid with shortness in Spades before going to 4H, but

When considering doubling the opponents in a part score
look at your spots and secondary honours. S-K109x might be
worth doubling 3S here, but not S-J432. The double in direct
seat tends to warn partner NOT to bid game and, at this
vulnerability, suggests that 3S rates to go down AT LEAST 2.

Many players believe that the most direct approach to winning
involves nothing more than bidding and playing OUR cards correctly.
This linear thinking rarely results in positive results. A more
aggressive approach is called for. It's not enough for US to play
to win, we must do everything in our power to help the opponents
lose! Pre-empting is one such tactic, forcing the enemy to guess
at ever-higher levels of bidding. Another is psychic or "tactical"
bids, such as Wintaka's inventive 2NT bid here. This ploy convinced
South that hir partner had overcalled on a dead minimum, while North
believed that South was marked for a complete yarborough.

With a 6 Spade as a potential source of tricks, a helping
card in both red suits and 14 HCPs, I accepted the invitation
without hesitation. Wintaka should probably correct to 4S, with
a reasonable expectation that the opponents MIGHT NOT be able to
double this. But Wintaka didn't want to "let the cat out of the
bag" by bolting to 4S until doubled. Down 5 for -500 would have
been a good score if our partner's had been allowed to make
+620 for 4H (or +600 for 3NT!) at the other table.

While I am loathe to argue with success, I must confess
that I would NOT have opened 3H with the North hand. It is
one Heart short and probably one defensive trick too heavy
for my tastes. Perhaps if you gave the North hand the H-10...

But a success it was! E-W's 10-card Spade fit never
saw the light of day here!

North's 6H final bid is hard to understand here. 6D, which
will MAKE on a non-Club lead, is cold because of the more balanced
4-4 (versus 6-3) fit. Note that, in 6D, Declarer will be able to
throw three Clubs on those Hearts and ruff a Club in hand. He
cannot do this in Hearts, obviously.

Remember: when choosing between an unbalanced (say , 5-3)
and a balanced (say, 4-4) fit, CHOOSE THE BALANCED ONE!

South "over-competed" here, seduced by the good Heart fit
and the favourable vulnerability. East's H-Ace in 2nd seat at
trick 5, failing to play "2nd hand low", felled hir partner's
singleton H-King and let us out for down 3 only. Nevertheless,
notice the 5D "in-between" bid en route to 5H. This might have
helped partner find the correct switch if we had defended 5S.

4C here is a splinter, showing good Spade support, shortness
in Clubs and slam interest. The East hand is, of course, at least
an Ace SHORT of slam interest here. Knowing that his C-K was
wasted opposite the Club shortness, West quickly stopped in 4S.

Handling the 4th-suit force is a very delicate matter when
Responder has real length in the 4th suit (Hearts, here). Does
a bid of the 4th suit followed by rebidding it show the game-forcing
hand or the invitational one? In standard practice, JUMPING in
the 4th suit (e.g. 1D:1S:2C:3H) is the forcing option, while bidding
and rebidding the short suit (e.g. 1D:1S:2C:2H:any:3H) is NOT
forcing--one of the few instances when a bid of the 4th suit is
NOT forcing. N-S, however, play this the other way around. Discuss
this with your favourite partner!

North knew that we were down in this match and decided to
"step out" with an anti-percentage 7NT contract, KNOWING that we
would likely require a finesse. The misfit in the minors makes
7NT difficult, but not impossible. The important theme is that
the 13 tricks will ONLY be possible if the H-Kx(x) is onside OR
if the S-J10 are doubleton or tripleton. The former possibility
is MUCH more likely, so Declarer MUST pin hir hopes on the Heart
finesse. Towards this end, Declarer should win the Club lead
ON DUMMY, take the Heart finesse, re-enter dummy with the Diamond,
cash all of dummy's winners, and re-try the Heart hook. 3 Spades,
3 Clubs, 2 Diamonds and 5 Hearts would add up to 13!

Once Declarer ducks the Club lead to hir C-Q, she can
STILL make providing the H-K is doubleton, since she has only
ONE entry to dummy (in Diamonds). She should now cash hir
S-AKQ in case the S-J10 DO fall. When they don't, she must
enter dummy, cash all of its winnings, finesse in Hearts,
play the Heart Ace, and pray! :)

A phenomenal 31 IMPs swung on this hand! :(

In 4th seat, Kaltica opens the strong 4-card major in order
to make it easier for partner to compete with 3- or 4-card
support. The alternative, 1NT, might have made it awkard for
partner if West overcalled, say, 2H, and North had 4 Spades.

2C was Reverse Drury, asking Opener to rebid anything BUT
2S if he was non-minimal. With 15 flat, South rebid a somewhat
encouraging 2NT, causing North to vault to game in Spades.

	MAYNARD's off-shape 2H opening bid, coupled with KSired's
psychic 2NT forcing response, combined to keep N-S out of the
auction here. Stealing the hand in 3H for -150 demonstrates
Ward Rule #4: "It ain't enough to try to win; half the job
is helping THEM lose." The two MAIN TOOLS for this task are
illustrated here: psyching and pre-empting. Other tools
include lead-directing, trap-passing, false-carding, and
"sewage" bidding (using totally meaningless bids to sew
confusion into auctions where the enemy have the preponderance
of strength).

Many pairs would play the double of 3S here as "Responsive",
showing a 3- or 4-card Heart suit opposite partner's takeout
double of 2S. This does not appear to me to be a useful
convention; if you got a suit, bid it and reserve the double
for penalty. After all, the takeout doubler is OFTEN short
in the enemy suit; doesn't it make sense that doubler's
partner might often have LENGTH and want to penalize them?
Nevertheless, I would bid 4C with the North hand.
