We challenged the Northern Stars well before winning our match
against the ScissorTails the night before this match. This vaulted
us over the Northern Stars. The match proceeded nonetheless,
with them assuming the role of Challengers. A pleasant time
was had by all--except "racoon", who had seen more than enough
of our Canadian Club system by the time the 2nd half was over!
The comments that you see between the hands are intended for
Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as
you enjoy these records of the decisive hands in this match.

Memory knew enough to balance with anything CLOSE to an
unbalanced hand here. 2C showed a 1-suiter, JaneF's 2D
inquired about which suit and became the final contract.
Always nice to make +90 at BOTH tables. :)

Rubber bridge players like North have seen too many -800s
to balance here, and are understandably gunshy. But, as
the old Spanish proverb says: "Fortuna favorece a los

...too bad it wasn't matchpoints!
East's frisky 3S bid was, no doubt, predicated on the
vulnerability; he expected to go DOWN. The C-King at
trick 2 set up the cross-ruff, but the defence will be
giving up a trump trick if the switch to Spades! They
may also fear those Diamonds! East could make it
legitimately by cashing two Diamonds BEFORE playing
the 3rd Club (on which South pitched a Diamond), but
that risks going down MANY if the 2nd Diamond is
ruffed and dummy's trumps are drawn.

It has long been my personal contention that the forcing
1NT
response to 1H or
1S is the worst convention ever invented.
Note how deftly N-S end up in their 3-3 Club fit rather than
their 5-3 Diamond fit. Indeed, the forcing 1NT response is
so bad that it casts a pall over any system
which uses it, starting with 2/1 GF and mainline Precision.
As bad as it is here at IMPs, it is much worse
at MatchPoints, where it bypasses the perfect spot (1NT itself).
Instead, Wintaka and I play a non-forcing
1NT reply and the
Toddler Two Diamond Response.

East could have REALLY beaten 2C up if he'd returned a
Diamond or a Club rather than a HEART (?!) at trick two.

South waited far too long to take the Club finesse. Once she
sees the opponents attacking her weakness, Diamonds, she must
plunk that C-Q on the table and pitch a Diamond loser. She
can then establish Hearts (losing two tricks there), then draw
trumps and, with careful timing, CLAIM 4S.

West should, of course, pass the vulnerable 1C opening out.
That would have been another demonstration of the folly of
3-card "natural" openings. Instead, though, he bid 2C
because his monitor was dirty and he thought North had opened
1S! East naturally took the 2C cuebid as Michaels and duly
blasted to 4H. Racoon and I both joked with Maynard about
this later, saying that his was a unique dilemma: most of us
have trouble with WINDOWS; his problem stemmed from WINDEX ! :)

East-West got far too ambitious here. West's hand is worth
a free bid of ONE Spade only, not two. East's holding is
worth ONE slam try (4D), not two (5H). While NEITHER of
these two "overbids" (2S and 5H) are egregiously bad,
TOGETHER they spell disaster. Players with keen intuition
"field" these things better.
BTW, the "Golden Glove" for fielding partner's psyches,
trap passes, gross underbids and grotesque overbids belongs
to Wintaka -- the GREATEST fielder I've seen since Roberto
Clemente! I once opened 1S on: S-8xxx H-xxx D-xxx C-xxx,
playing with Ray Hornby. FOURTEEN tables away Wintaka
stuck his head up and shouted clear across the room:
"Colin, are you psyching AGAIN!?" :)

Note that Wintaka did not even CONSIDER a slam here.
Maynard played the WINGS off this one! He cannot draw trumps
because that would leave him with too many Diamond losers. So
he (altogether now!) ATTACKED HIS LENGTH! Even though the
Heart Queen got ruffed off, Maynard's Plan B of hoping that
North started with only S-Jx worked like a charm as the H-Ace
provided a pitch for the 4th Diamond. Brilliant! Study the
play of this hand CAREFULLY. Hard to make even double-dummy!!

An interesting question: does West's FREE 2D bid here show
EXTRA values? No. East's redouble creates a forcing condition
(i.e. East-West cannot defend 1S undoubled). Rebidding one's
long suit under such circumstances does NOT show extras.

With the score 23-22, Bill and I took the field. You may
want to put the kiddies to bed; this is NOT going to be

These 12 boards became a demonstration of Canadian Club
defensive bidding methods. It was almost as if Bill and I

our defensive gadgets -- and virtually NONE of our much
more numerous OFFENSIVE tools!

The natural 1NT overcall is a poor competitive tool. For
every time ADVANCER has most of the outstanding HCPs, leading
us to GAME, RESPONDER will have most of the outstanding HCPs,
leading to -800! Furthermore, the 1NT overcall allows
Responder to make a non-forcing free bid with any 5+card suit.
The point: whenever you have a tough decision between DOUBLING
and overcalling 1NT, DOUBLE--if only for reasons of Maxi-Flex
(e.g. partner might leave it in!).
Canadian Clubbers use the 1NT to describe any STRONG overcall.
In this way, we don't have to make off-shape takeout doubles.
My 2D response showed 6+ HCPs. Wintaka briskly raised my
2S rebid to game. Easy game, bridge. :)

While our teammates were chalking up FOUR Spades, we were
kicking ourselves for not beating THREE Spades.
Note first the LOW lead from H-QJ82--correct from KQxx also.
According to OUR methods, my D-4 showed TWO Diamonds. East
should have given me a Spade ruff to set 3S.
Seeing East show out in Spades, South can ENSURE the contract
by leading a Diamond from dummy at trick 6 and finessing the
D-Jack. After all, if West wins this with D-Q there is far
less chance of a setting ruff! :)
Remember: Keep the "safe" hand on lead!

3D by West showed a limit raise or better in support of East's

Diamond length, suggesting a save in 5D.

West's double of 1NT was takeout, showing a 2-suiter. Looking
at 5-5 in the reds, North overbid SLIGHTLY with 3H. Staring at
a doubleton Diamond as a ruffing value, South raised to 4H.
East, inspired by five Hearts with GOOD SPOTS, hammered 4H
off for +800. A pass by East here would have pushed the board,
squandering a chance for the +800.
Remember: double close contracts with trump length IF YOU
HAVE GOOD TRUMP SPOTS.

The opponents wondered why we didn't double 3NT here. Again
we see the Steinitz Dictum: "Don't interrupt the opponents
while they're making a mistake." Doubling 3NT would chase
the opponents to 4D (for -130) or force us to bid 4H (for -100
if they find the Club shift). Still, Wintaka might have
tried 4H here. Nevertheless, beating 3NT SEVEN is fun! :)

Here we see SIX of the seven IMPs the opponents gained
against us in the 2nd half. Still, I would bid 4H again
here: if either major suit King is onside OR if Spades
were to break 3-3 I would've made. :(
I should have won the first Heart IN MY HAND, though, and
finessed a Spade IMMEDIATELY. Note: if South holds up
the S-K I could then draw trumps and switch to DIAMONDS
without taking the Spade finesse again! :)

One of the WORST aspects of Standard bidding is the 2NT
opening bid, precluding weak unbalanced responding hands from
finding their best fit. Pre-empt with WEAK hands, not with
20-counts! And certainly don't PSYCHE it on 18 HCPs! :)
