Space Cadets versus NEKKID
back to
Home Planet
The Space Cadets won their first match against the NEKKIDs 78-32. In this return match the NEKKID's most reliable player had an uncharacteristically poor outing. The Cadets, on the other hand, were augmented by two strong players, Myuen and Fireball. Furthermore, the Cadets were no longer newcomers to the OKBridge experience. This, then, was a rout, right?

Uh, no. The NEKKIDs played well as a team and, as is our custom, the Cadets blew another lead in an exciting finish.
It was a fun match between OKBridge friends, marred only by connection problems for us. Wintaka got disconnected in the middle of a hand and was never able to return. We thank Myuen and Fireball for filling in on such short notice.

The comments that you see between the hands are intended for Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as you enjoy these records of the decisive hands in this match.

South made a cute Diamond play off dummy here at trick 2.
Note that East COULD give his partner a Spade ruff and
COULD play a Club through Declarer's C-K2. But he can't
do both! Now Wintaka has PLENTY of entries for the
	Heart finesse. West's H-6 at trick 5 was a "time-saver".

We have all heard the adage "Eight ever, nine never",
advising us to take a finesse with EIGHT trumps while
eschewing it with nine. Only the FIRST half of this
old saw is correct. With NINE trumps you should take
the finesse whenever the opponents have bid rather
aggressively, playing for the drop of the Qx only when
the opponents have been strangely silent. West's 3C
bid over 2H is a clue that Hearts are NOT breaking 2-2
here. Play the Ace, go to dummy's Spades (which in
itself will reveal the trump situation) and "hook"
	(i.e. finesse) in Hearts.

Both East and West overbid on this one. The good news is that
West had no wasted values opposite East's singleton Diamond.
The bad news is that West very few values at all! :)
Still, if the Spade finesse had been ONSIDE 4H would have
sailed home with careful play. The opponents would do
best to lead trumps (to leave Declarer with a loser Diamond).

"Aces are meant to take Kings," is another well-worn truism.
Here, though, South held up his Ace so that, when a second
round was played, he could continue to "pump" declarer with
Heart plays. I erred in playing the S-Queen, obviously
("2nd hand low" is another useful pointer!). I should have
stopped to envision what my partner was doing, and born in
mind that Declarer would be unlikely to play with way
	with S-AKJ10xx.
The S-K was a good play, though, catering to a stiff S-Q.
Revdisc must have learned when to play the Spade suit like
this in our last match. :)

South suffered from "amaurosis bridgitica" here. She should
play the boss H-9 at trick 3, felling dummy's singleton H-8.
West took full advantage of this, tossing a "loser on a
loser" -- only to find out that the H-8 would be a winner!
Such plays, you will note, will never lose and may, on such
	rare occasions, pay dividends. :)

The two auctions here center on HAND EVALUATION, which is at
the heart of this game. South's 1NT revealed that he knew
hit hand was all but useless to declarer in a Spade contract.
Since OUR 1S Openers are limited to 15 HCPs, his poorish
10-count was not worth a game try.
And yet, with 23 HCPs, the hand did not make even ONE No
Trump! South MIGHT have made his contract had he not switched
horses in mid-stream. Ducking a Spade at trick 4 to West's
S-King may well have allowed him to scramble home 7 tricks.

When your partner leads a King you should, in general, show
ATTITUDE. Here, my H-J shows the H-10 but NOT the H-Q.
Wintaka duly switched and we were able to get our three
Heart tricks. Of course, had South held the H-KQ he
would know that he could continue them without worrying
	about leading into, say, H-AJx.

Generally speaking, the lead of an Ace should ask for COUNT,
while the lead of a face-card should ask for ATTITUDE. We
call this KATARACT: "King ATTitute, Ace Requests A CounT."
South would have done better to reserve the Ace for hands
where she has LENGTH in Hearts, such that she might suspect
partner might have a doubleton and be about to RUFF the
3rd round of Hearts. From H-AK9 only, the King is best,
looing for the H-Q from partner.

"1C?" KSired wondered aloud, "Geez, how did we get so high?" :)
West should NOT give up control of Clubs by playing the C-A at
trick 8. Rather, he should attack Diamonds. 2 Diamonds, a
Spade, a Heart and the Ace of Clubs is 5 tricks, and he's
already scored a Heart ruff for 6 tricks. It ain't a MAKE,

A PASS followed by a bid of a suit shows a good hand but a
weak suit. I certainly bought a nice dummy here!
My H-10 at trick 6 catered to a 4-1 Heart split onside while
not allowing West on lead -- in case there is a Club ruff.

When you open in 4th seat you MUST take a plus to justify
your decision. A weak 2-bid, then, becomes an intermediate
(11-13 HCPs) 2-bid, warning partner NOT to make any
invitational moves even with 12 HCPs. West, then, rates
to get 4 Spades and two round suit Aces and hopes partner
can contribute a couple of tricks too.

South might have guessed to compete to 3C here, knowing that
he can comfortably defend any THREE level contract. But
what if that excites partner too much? Will North, having
heard 3C, not be tempted to bid 4C?
The trick here is to have TWO ways of supporting an overcaller's
suit: the DEFENSIVE raise (warning partner not to go crazy)
and the OFFENSIVE raise (saying that you WOULD like to compete
later). Unfortunately, standard bidding methods CANNOT make
such a fine distinction. But OUR "Canadian Club" methods DO!
In OUR methods, partner could and should have bid 2NT to
show scattered defensive values and support for my Clubs.
East may well have competed to 3H, down one. :(

KSired found a very sensible pass of 3D here. Remember
that any rebid over your partner's jump to 2NT is
forcing ONLY WHEN THE OPPONENTS HAVE NOT INTERVENED. If
they HAVE intervened, only a new suit or a cuebid would
	be forcing. Nice stop!

Here I made an impatient 2S bid and ended up paying full
price for it. Playing "McGuinty", 2S showed a 1-suited
hand. Instead of "burying" my Club suit in order to
make it difficult for East to show a red suit, I should
have DOUBLED to show a 2- or 3-suiter. Only then could
we find our Club fit. 4C would make our way.

One would expect 16-21 HCPs and a double stopper in Clubs
for a 3NT bid here. With neither, South should pass 3D.
For his part, North could pass the pre-emptive 3C raise,
but that might miss a part score (in 3D or 3S) even opposite
	South's mediocre hand.
"But why not PASS 3C and wait for South to double again?"
you might ask. The answer is that 3D may make on a number
of hands that partner would NOT re-open over 3D. Furthermore,
if South WERE to make a re-opening double when 3C were
passed around to him how would I "catch up"?

North's 3C bid was alerted ("Clubs may be longer than Diamonds").
N-S strongly suspected that they had a minor suit slam here,
but could not commit themselves to it over E-W's effective
interference. Both of Wintaka's cuebids showed a minor suit
	fit and slam interest.
South's FIRST cuebid forced game while showing no interest
in the other major (he could make a negative double first if
he were). Now, bearing in mind that our fit could ONLY be
a MINOR suit fit, this means that I should--for the moment
at least--concentrate on No Trump. To play there, ONE of
us must have a stopper in THEIR suit. Since South isn't
bidding NT, it would be incumbent upon me to bid NT if *I*
had a Spade guard. Hence, the "West Coast Cuebid" of 2S
asks for a stopper in the enemy suit.
South's SECOND Spade cuebid SHOWED a Spade stopper, since
he could PASS 3H around to me to re-iterate his interest
in a Spade guard. Hence, 3S expressed interest in a
	HEART stopper.

Alas, during the play of this hand Wintaka's connection
was lost and we never got him back. :(

MYuen later apologized for not bidding 4C over 3NT here,
showing interest in 6C. Note that 6C makes on the same
Club finesse that I'm going to need to make 3NT?
On defence, this is a GREAT hand for the "Rule of 11"
(i.e. take the spot card led and subtract it from 11
to find out how many cards higher than that are OUTSIDE
	the opening leader's hand). There were (11 - 6 =) FIVE
cards higher than the S-6 outside the East hand. With
two (S-Q9) on the table and three (S-KJ10) in the West
hand ALL OF THEM WERE ACCOUNTED FOR. West should have
DUCKED the S-6 with his S-2, confident that Declarer
would NOT be able to win the trick. Five rounds of
Spades later Declarer would be down one.

5C is a sensible contract here. 6C is slightly superior,
though, in that in addition to the 50-50 Club finesse
Declarer may, on a non-Diamond lead, pitch the D-5 on
a good Heart and ruff 2 Diamonds whenever Clubs are 2-1.
It is very hard to find 6C here, though, and 5C may be
good enough for a swing if 3NT went down at our table.

9 HCPs opposite a 15-17 HCP 1NT are only worth a game try
if Responder has some tens or a 5-card suit. Here, North
was unlucky to find his partner with a full 17 HCPs AND a
fit for Spades AND a doubleton Diamond AND H-AKxx to
benefit from the often-useless H-QJ doubleton. N-S were
fortunate, though, in that even with that, NO GAME MAKES
because of the 5-2 Club break. Whew! :)

Srnkvist made a good "Sandwich 1NT" overcall here, showing
5-5 in the majors and a weak hand. Had West held the H-K
instead of the D-K he would have made a move towards 4S.
With the Hearts 3-3 and the Spades 2-2, 4S is a very
	lucky make here.

With a flat 5-3-3-2 hand South should PASS the 1NT reply so

certainly won't have anything to say over 1NT here!

North made two bad bids in a row here. First, the PASS
of 1H. Much better would have been 2C. Having chosen
to pass 1H, I then tried to recover with 4S. I had hoped
to employ the Richter Rule (i.e. run from any double of 4S
that registers above 3.1 on the Richter scale) here. I
could hear Srnkvist's double of 4S all the way from Sweden.
But before I could scamper off to 5C (itself another
	bloodbath) South intervened with 5D.

	A good contract well played.

East's takeout double provided a clue that Hearts might be
dividing 4-1 here. Even without it, though, Declarer should
play safe by finessing the second round of Hearts. I can
afford ONE Heart loser, but not two. As soon as West showed
in to the second round of trumps, then, the contract was
	secure.

2D was, I believe, the "HELLO" convention, showing either
	Diamonds OR a major-minor 2-suiter. South bravely bid 2D,
hoping for the latter. The saliva on the table was Rbrough's.

When you've opened a defining bid such as 1NT (or 2NT or a
pre-empt) you cannot bid again unless partner bids. West's
2H call was not what the doctor ordered here. :(

Underscoring the inadvisability of KSired's 2H contract at
the OTHER table, N-S made 2H here the other way!
South played this hand brilliantly, "reversing" dummy by
scoring THREE Diamond ruffs in his hand before forcing
West to ruff Clubs and then forcing West to lead Spades
around to his S-KQ84. Very well done, Mike!
