This was the Space Cadet's inaugural match. We were pitted
against my old team, the "NEKKIDs", captained by the man who
gave our team life: Richard Ternouth
("Onedown")
or, to his
friends, "RT". THREE of the current Space Cadets are emigrés
from the NEKKID team.
The comments that you see between the hands are intended for
Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as you enjoy these
records of the decisive hands in this match.

Hmm, the first hand out of the chute is utterly flat.
This was not a good sign, since it deprived us of an
opportunity for a "Gamble Gambit". Ex-Winnipegger
Bill Gamble used to lose his mind on the first board
of every long match, and then play solid bridge for
the remainder. By the time the opponents figured out
they were NOT, in fact, playing against a lunatic it
was TOO LATE for them. :)

Nancy misplayed this one slightly. Kenny wins my Diamond
lead with the King and returned one (a Spade might've been
better). Tossing a Spade on the boss diamond didn't cost
here, but it set up a pseudo-trump promotion once Kenny is
in with the Heart Ace. But Nancy should've ruffed the 4th
Diamond with something HIGHER than the Heart 8.

In light of the fact that Tonci bid 2H FREELY over my
2D, Nancy should bid 3H here. ALL of her HCPs are in
partner's suits. Notice that we DID get all our tricks
here to score ONE IMP. Kenny & I play KATARACT, where
the lead of an ACE (of Clubs here) asks for COUNT. My
C-43 echo convinced him to switch to Diamonds for our
third and last trick.

Again, we see a combination of good defence by Kenny and
unfortunate choices by their Declarer. Kenny's repeated
spade leads forced Tonci to find his own tricks. Winning
the 3rd Spade on DUMMY was an error, of course, since he
had no guarantee of returning to his hand. A CLUB off
DUMMY is better, though, since it preserves the possibility
of a winning Diamond finesse later. With dummy's trumps
gone, Kenny and I were then free to play HEARTS to force
Declarer. Down THREE, of course, was a bit much!

Here we see our team bidding perfectly. There is NO REASON
to go beyond 1S here. It IS worth noting, BTW, that a 1S
reply by an UNPASSED hand in Valentines and the Canadian
Club would also be NON-FORCING, leading us to 1S even if
RBrough were NOT a passed hand!
Revdisc should have balanced with 2H here, as I did at the
other table.

Not bidding a greasy slam is no excuse for not MAKING a
greasy slam. Kenny wins the trump lead and attacks his
LENGTH. Easy game, bridge. The 3-3 Diamond break, coupled
with the Spade King onside, yielded us 12 tricks.

The opponents were checking Kenny for wires after this one.
His 3S bid DENIED anything in Spades (a familiar misbid?),
which caused me to think that my stiff Spade was GOLD. It
marked Kenny with Diamond ACE, Heart King and Club QUEEN.
WRONG! Realizing his error, Kenny PASSED Blackwood, looking
at S-AQ10x. Nancy could've made it harder for me by NOT
returning a Spade into dummy's S-AQx, though. A lucky
recovery by Kenny, although, even with his POS, I WOULD
have made a lucky 6C (2-2 Club break, Diamond Ace and
Spade King onside).

Tonci played this hand as badly as he bid it, I'm afraid.
3C, of course, is from Mars, while 4H instead of 3S is
from Alpha Centuri! He was fortunate not to get a VOID
in Hearts in dummy! Still, the hand is COLD for 5 if he
plays it right. Win the 2nd Diamond and play a Heart to
Dummy's Queen. Then play a CLUB from dummy ("low towards
big"). Once in again, draw trumps and then play SPADES.
When South (me) shows out on the second round overtake on
Dummy and lead a 2nd CLUB. Making FIVE.

Here, at least, East (Memory) was given a chance to
deny secondary Heart support. At least OUR Declarer
here could expect more than a void in Hearts on Dummy.
Again, the bad line of play. Here, though, Dave

Good bidding at both tables !
And, so, the first half ended, with the Space Cadets up 36-1.
Seeing the score, I immediately raced to my teammates and
demanded to know which of them spat up the IMP ! (It was
Memory, as it turned out). I was just kidding, of course. :)

Here is a rather obvious psyche. Two passes to me and I want a
Heart lead, so 1H is clear. Ove Srnkvist thought about doubling
and then guessed to overcall 1S. Kenny's 3H bid puts Hugs in an
awkward position. 3NT presumes a good hand from partner for the
1S overcall, so 3S is preferred. Instead, HUGs passed, thinking
that her H-KJ3 were useless under my presumed H-AQxx(x).
Note that Kenny bid THREE HEARTs here, not 4H. He knows that
a 3rd seat opening from an experience partner may be...shaded.

This is Memory's only bad hand of the match. Instead
of winning the H-10 lead in DUMMY and finessing the
Spade QUEEN, she panicked over a possible Heart ruff.
Even if that were the case, though, she should play
the S-ACE first to hold it to down 1 and pick off a
possible stiff S-KING.

RT (and Kenny) love 4-suit transfers, so they have to use
"pychic" Stayman whenever they want to invite game in 3NT.
Hence, the alerted 2C does NOT imply a 4-card major. An

Pure grease. My "ambitious" 2NT rebid found Kenny with
good Club spots, leading him to bid 3NT with his 11 HCPs.
I won the Diamond lead in my hand, played 5 rounds of

Diamond to him and he panicked, giving me a Heart trick.
I actually slimed off an OVERTRICK when dummy's last

South focused his attention on the odds of East having a stiff
S-Q, S-10 or S-9 as opposed to a singleton S-A. He figured his
play was 3-1 better than my leading the S-8 first (to be FOLLOWED
by the S-K). Hence, his unfortunate lead of the S-K at trick 7.
Revdisc's mistake was to ignore the bidding. At the
OTHER table the 3NT bid by East marked East for S-A, S-Qx or,
PERHAPS, a stiff S-Q. At THIS table East made a 2/1 Game-forcing
2C response. Having shown only 7 HCPs the H-Q brings East
to only 9 HCPs. Hence, East PROBABLY has the S-A and DEFINITELY
has an honour. Given this, a stiff S-10 or S-9 were NOT
possibilities. Study this Spade holding carefully and you will
understand that leading the S-8 first NEVER loses a trick (as
compared to leading the King) and actually GAINS a trick in
ONE PARTICULAR INSTANCE: the actual lie of cards! :)
Consider the possibility of West having S-A109 and East
having S-Qx. Declarer begins with the S-8. Some East's, seeing
partner's S-9 holding the first Spade trick, will not see the
necessity of OVERTAKING this and playing the H-Q to give partner
a trump promotion. In this way the S-8, to be followed by
the S-K (felling the doubleton S-Q and leaving WEST on
lead) could hold the trump losers to TWO if East started
with S-Qx.
Months later Revdisc was STILL baffled by this hand! :)

3NT by RBrough is a "lazy" bid. I prefer 2H followed by
3C. THEN, if Memory bids 3NT, RBrough would have to
respect partner's decision. But here Memory was never
TOLD about the Club fit and therefore couldn't evaluate
her hand for play in 6C. With 2 Aces, a King, a 5th Club
and a singleton Spade, I think Memory may well have
accepted such an invitation HAD IT BEEN MADE. A tough
slam to reach, though...in any system.
