This was a rare event of late: FOUR real live Space Cadets at
the same table! Eunice Portnoy's "Mazeltov" showed up on time and
were "ready to play". This was a very tough match, with a lot of
great bids and plays made by both sides. When the smoke
cleared, the Space Cadets were unsuccessful in their comeback attempt.
Nevertheless, it was fun! At the risk of understating
the case, we look forward to a rematch.
The comments that you see between the hands are intended for
Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as you enjoy these
records of the decisive hands in this match.

These "3rd suit fits" are very difficult to find after the
opponents have opened 1NT. East showed Clubs and superior

Once you have opened a "defining" bid, such as 1NT, 2NT or
a pre-empt, you cannot make another free move -- especially
one which increases the level of the bidding. North was
very lucky West didn't double 3D!

Playing Lebensohl, East's direct 3H bid shows some values
(whereas a 2NT by East--forcing West to bid 3C--followed by 3H,
would not). Notice that East shows a 4-card major rather than
a 5-card minor opposite partner's takeout double. On THIS hand
this backfired (3C makes), but in the long run East's choice
would yield positive results. A rather unlucky hand.
Notice a recurrent them: in a Moysian (i.e. 4-3) fit
Declarer establishes the side-suit length before playing
too many trumps.

E-W were playing the Canadian Club, so 2S was a natural
Game-Force and 4D showed (are you ready for this?) four
Spades WITHOUT the S-Queen, ONE Key Card (i.e. the Ace
of Hearts) and a minimum (13 or 14 HCPs). Knowing this,
West quickly stopped in 4S.
When South ruffed the second Club, marking North with
SEVEN Clubs, Wintaka correctly reasoned that North would
likely be short in trumps. The second trump finesse
brought E-W ten tricks.

"Rescuing" partner from a doubled contract is wrong 95% of
the time. Holding the stiff C-J and so little defensive
strength, South should be HAPPY to play in Clubs. 3C will
go for either -800 or -1100 on this particular hand.
Maynard and I are big fans of "Hemingway" (i.e very light)
pre-empts, but at this vulnerability even *I* would pass
with the North hand. :)

Again, E-W were unlucky in that an anti-percentage game
happens to flutter home. In the play, I endeavoured to
keep North OFF lead, lest she find a Diamond switch. I
double-finessed Hearts TOWARDS my hand and led black
cards FROM my hand, ruffing my Spade loser and slipping
a Club past South (it doesn't help TREID to win the C-A
since I would then pitch Diamond losers on the C-KQ) in
the process. Remember: SMALL towards BIG. :)

One of the problems with Standard American is the wide HCP
range of the 1-level suit opening bids. East should NOT
jump to 4H playing SAYC or 2/1 GF because those two Aces,
coupled with the 5-card support for Opener's Hearts, could
be GOLD. E-W might even have a slam, playing SAYC!
Here, though, E-W were playing a forcing 1C, so that the
1H opening bid was limited to 15 HCPs. Of course, if West
had not doubled, East would have.
The pre-emptive 4H bid caught TREID in an awkward situation.
He chose to try 5C. Others might use the Richter Rule and
bid 4S instead. If the double of 4S registers above 3.1 on
the Richter scale, THEN South would retreat to 5C. :)

North's 4D cuebid was very ambitious. His second slam
try, the 5C cuebid, was also very aggressive. North's
sterile 5-2-3-3 distribution and 17 HCPs opposite
South's limit raise of 3S does not add up to a slam. :(

Now it was MY turn to overbid. North's pre-emptive 3H raise
put me on the spot--as pre-empts often do! With 12 HCPs I
gambled with 3NT (which would NOT have been a happy contract).
Wintaka pulled to 4D, which I should have passed (since it

West's lead directing bid of 3C, supporting my Hearts, warned
us that 4S would NOT make here. N-S were content to let us
play in 4H. South's 2NT bid was explained as a limit raise
of Spades, but I'm not sure his partner understood this.
Such miscommunication underlines the advantages that a long
term partnership such as E-W have over newly formed ones.

This is what a FOURTH seat pre-empt looks like. South
knows that she does NOT want to go minus--else she'd
have done better to pass--so she begins with 2S to
stop partner from getting excited and making limit
raises. She was very unlucky that the opponents had
SIX of the outstanding seven Spades. :(

Here we see one of the great ethical advantages of playing
bridge on the net rather than at the table. My 2H showed
a 3-suiter, short in Diamonds...and 11-15 HCPs! In
explaining this to the opponents I was able to add that
I might be much lighter than this IN THIRD SEAT. I could
not do this at the table, since partner would hear this
latter addendum and infer that I may have opened VERY
light. When I pulled partner's penalty double of 2S to 3C,
though, EVERYONE knew that I had opened a garbage can.
When I led the D-5 at trick 3 I was able to tell Declarer
privately that this marked me for precisely 4-4-1-4. Such
full disclosure is often impossible at the table, with
partner sitting across from you.
Speaking of ethics, the opponents were quite shocked to
hear that three of us Space Cadets had our ICQ turned on
during the match. Couldn't we be using that to cheat?
(Yes, we could. But not everyone who owns a knife is
Jack the Ripper.) We explained that we also had email
(as they did) and that some of us had second phone lines
(again, as they did). Hence, ALL of us OKBridgers are on
the honour system. ANY of us on EITHER team COULD cheat
if we were so inclined. But why would we bother? :)
Needless to say, they accepted this explanation

Maynard's 2C was "New Minor Forcing". 6S makes despite
the wasted Diamond values on Dummy. Swap the D-AK for
the S-Ace and H-King and 7S would have been cold. :)

South's 5C response showed 1 or 4 Aces. But hands with
voids do not "Blackwood" well. North correctly
guessed that South's Ace would be in Diamonds, but 6S
was worthwile anyway. Remember: when you bid 4NT
Blackwood you should be ready to bid SIX if your side
has 3 Aces.

A reasonable but infortunate S-5 (3rd best) lead by South.
North COULD have beaten 3NT by DUCKING this, but such
exceptions to the "third hand high" rule are rare and very
hard to find "at the table". The key to THIS exception is
South's presumed Spade length and the paucity of entries
to dummy. This idea of stranding Declarer in one hand or
the other is a recurrent theme whenever the opponents have
bid 3NT on a misfit.

Here again we see the benefits of active bidding. East's
overcall not only drove them to 4S on a 5-2 fit, but it
told West what to lead. More subtly, it would have told
EAST what NOT to lead had North been able to insist on
playing 3NT AFTER hearing East bid Hearts. This is
called "lead discovery". You overcall a suit in the
hopes of learning if it is safe to lead it.
The defence waited patiently for its 2 Hearts, Spade
and Diamond.

South's failure to play 2nd hand low at trick two was
ill-advised. Declarer is MOST UNLIKELY to have started
a small Heart from H-A3. Even if she had, the trick
would come back by North ruffing off the H-Ace!

Note the play in the trump suit here. After the surprise
Spade ruff I had to guess to put in the D-10. When South
ruffed he partner's S-Jack with the D-Jack a simple finesse
brought in the trump suit for +110 and a push board.

South's 4C bid with H-874 was a little too encouraging for
North. She tried to put the brakes on in 5D but North bid
on aggressively. Switch South's majors, of course, and
6D would make. :(
This partnership needs a "brakeman". :)

2C showed 11-15 and 5+Clubs. 2H was a "trial transfer"
with 4+Spades. Wintaka played this hand brilliantly,
ducking a Spade to retain trump control. He then
established the Club suit by ruffing one before
drawing trump. Excellent Moysian technique and a
well-earned IMP!

We, too, got too high on this hand, owing to my 2NT misbid
opposite partner's artificial 2D (usually a limit raise in
Spades). I should have either bid 2H (a minimum) or 3D. :(
South inexplicably jettisoned the Heart Jack on the 2nd
round of Diamonds, endplaying his partner and forcing her
to cash out her Club Ace for down one.

N-S found an EXCELLENT sacrifice here which almost MADE! In
the play, Memory even guessed to NOT take the Spade hook. Had
South guessed to play the C-Jack from dummy at trick 8 she'd
have pinned the C-10 and made 5D doubled! Instead, she played
the technically correct play (hoping East had started with
C-KQx) of the C-6. Great try, Memory!

When North chose to pass 1H E-W had clear sailing to 4H. 2D
was one of those wierd conventions (the "Toddler 2D") that
Canadian Clubbers play. In this case, it was a constructive
Heart raise. West's 3S showed Spades and a maximum.
North's pass of 1H, while slightly conservative, would be
the choice of many if not most experts. As a matter of
style, Maynard and I both prefer a more aggressive,
"in-the-face" approach, which paid off well on this
particular hand.
