This was our second match against Larry Cramer's "Late Entry"
team. In the first match, "Late Entry" crushed us, 79-56. But
this time they would be without their star performer, Jillin, who
had left the team in the interim. A chance for revenge!
The comments that you see between the hands are intended for
Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as you enjoy these
records of the decisive hands in this match.

Maynard's gutsy double is well rewarded here. Note the C-Q
lead, asking partner to drop the Jack if it were a doubleton.
This prevents Maynard from continuing Clubs if Declarer ducks
with, say, C-AJx (a "Bath Coup").
Theoretricians will see from this example hand why Wintaka and
I do NOT employ a strong 1NT overcall ! :)

These 4-4-4-1 hands are so awkward in most systems that the
Italian Blue Team invented the Roman 2D opening bid just
to handle them! E-W did well to stagger into 3NT -- after
risking being dropped in 2H! -- and avoiding the 50% 6D.

Kenny erred slightly at trick one on the Heart lead. Lacking
entries to his hand, he should RISE with the H-K to preserve
his H-A entry. This allows him to enter his hand after
playing the Spade King (which North should DUCK, BTW).

Sometimes good or prescient play makes good bidding moot. 3H
was a good stop here, percentage-wise. But the good guess in
Diamonds and the fortunate Heart lie allows 4H to make.

Is this a good game? West's 1S bid dramatically increases
the chances of both Spade honours being offside. With TWO
Spade losers -- and a possible trump promotion if they ARE
offside -- South will have to guess the Diamonds (50%) AND
catch the H-K onside (50%) AND get a 3-1 (50%) or 2-2 (40%)
Heart break. This works out to about 22.5%, less than HALF
of what is required.

Against South's weak 1NT opening, KSired's 2H showed a weak
hand with the majors according to the "Geneva Convention"
that we employ. How did I, as East, know to pass and not
correct to 2S? First, because 2H isn't doubled! Second,
because PASSING 2H doesn't give NORTH another chance to bid!
Third, we have the "Maximum Flexibility" (or "Maxi-Flex")
theme rearing its head again: when choosing between TWO
equally attractive or unattractive options, (Pass or 2S
here), CHOOSE THE CHEAPER! If 2H could have concealed a
STRONG hand I MIGHT have bid 2S to "keep the auction alive"
in case partner had something else to say. :)

After a great start, I misdefended here. Under partner's
C-K I discouraged with the C-3 and he switched to a Spade
so we could get our 2 Spade tricks in before declarer pitched
one on a Club. With 2 in both Black suits, I needed only
exit something OTHER than a ruff-and-sluff. My 13th Spade
play would have worked if partner had H-Jx or H-Qx, since
it would give us a trump promotion for the setting trick.

What is the double of 2C here? Penalty? I would say so,
since South's first double suggested Clubs (and the majors).
If so, North should reason that South has wasted Club values
and content himself with a more conservative 2H bid. But
North must have thought it showed an overall maximum though;
nothing else explains the 3H bid. Nevertheless, South's 4H
was very ambitious, given North's original 1S reply.

An unfortunate result for South's approach here. My own
style for light 3rd seat openers is to PASS partner's
response -- regardless of what it is -- wherever possible.
Passing 1H *might* have landed N-S in a 4-2 fit, but at
least the LEVEL would be right! Myself, I would open
the South hand 1S since it allows me to "pre-empt" the
4th (presumeably strongest) hand AND it puts me in the
best position to pass whatever partner responds. :)

West froze when he heard the Unusual 2NT. When 5C came
around to him he thought Christmas must've come early!
5C is too high for such a flat hand as North's. A 4C
bid would have been enough--and much tougher to double.
South, meanwhile, would have done better to bid 2C (as
Maynard did at the other table), with the idea of
showing FOUR diamonds later with a 2NT REBID (e.g. if
West's 2S raise were passed around to South 2NT would
show 4 Diamonds while DOUBLE would show 4 HEARTS).

"LEAD YOUR PARTNER'S SUIT!" is a truism that would have worked
well here. But both opponents HEARD my 1S bid and decided to
bid 3NT anyway. KSired reasoned that a "surprise" Heart lead
would be in order. An unfortunate decision on THIS hand, but
a valid theme nevertheless.

The 1S overcall seems to have propelled the opponents into
making some very odd bids, not the least of which is the
final 33 HCP 3NT contract.

And yet the 33 HCP slam turns out to be unmakeable! KSired's
play was non-optimal. Better would have been to cash off
four Clubs in case East sheds a Diamond or a Spade. If East
pitches a Diamond on the 3rd or 4th Club South can play
D-Ace, dropping the D-Jack, and finessing the D-10. If
East sheds a Spade South can play S-AQ and another Spade,
ENDPLAYING East in Hearts! East can beat 6NT *only* by
pitching two Hearts on the 3rd and 4th Club.

Many players panic when they make a takeout double and partner
bids their short suit. With minimal values one must PASS and
"take your lumps" if the fit proves inadequate. Do NOT compound
your problems by overbidding, as West did here with 3NT. East
might have MADE 3D. If so, 3NT costs E-W (300 + 110) 410 !

on lead here. A trump lead would have beaten 2H.

With a 3-3-3-4 9 HCPs and only ONE 10-spot East is barely
worth a 2NT raise, let alone 3NT. At matchpoints I might
PASS with the East hand, by the way.
Remember: 4-3-3-3 type hands should be devalued by
AT LEAST 1 HCP.

A good hand for science. Wintaka's 2C was "Golady" (game-forcing
transfer Stayman). 2S showed 4+CLUBs. 3H settled Hearts as
trump. 4H showed (brace yourself): a MINIMUM hand with 2 Key
Cards (i.e. 2 Aces or an Ace and the Heart King) WITHOUT a 6th
Heart OR the Heart Queen. Off 2 Key cards and facing a minimum
partner stopped in 4H. :)

Another wierd auction by the Canadian Clubbers. After the
Golady (GF transfer Stayman) 2C and 2S rebid, showing Clubs,
West suggested a Club contract with 3C. East EAGERLY
accepted with 4C, which showed a maximal hand with 5+Clubs
and/or the Club Queen. 4D asked for Key Cards and 4NT
revealed two (i.e. an Ace and the trump King here). West
sailed into 6C and claimed almost immediately.

Here I misdefended, returning a Heart rather than a safe
Club or Diamond at trick three. Still, North had to find the
DUCK of Heart to his H-10 to make 6NT. :(
Remember: against 6NT or 7NT make Declarer WORK for those
tricks; do NOT make risky leads.

The D-9 is a much better lead against 6NT, giving nothing up.
North should have made 6NT, though, in the ending. Note West's
D-Q and D-10 at tricks 6 and 7. This marks him with the D-Jack.
East, Meanwhile, is marked for the H-7. Hence, NEITHER player
can have S-Kx as their last 2 two cards! Therefore, North
should have played the S-Ace at trick 12, CONFIDENTLY dropping
the S-King offside! Gotta watch those cards carefully! :)
