This was a relaxed and entertaining match. Richard "RODDY" Oddy
was playing only his second team game on OKBridge and appreciated our
help in mastering the intricacies of setting up such a contest. We
thank guests cadets JaneF, Irish and FrankSto for filling in so admirably
for the missing cadets: Maynard,
Wintaka and RBrough.
The comments that you see between the hands are intended for
Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as you enjoy these
records of the decisive hands in this match.

East's 3C call is a "2nd negative", denying ANY HCPs. A 5-card
major headed by the King AND Jack does NOT qualify for such
denigration. Contrast this to Memory's correct 3H rebid...

Great bidding by Irish! This hand illustrates what happens
when you do NOT get WHOBbed (i.e. when you do NOT have the
Wrong Hand On Bid). Looking at those great Spades and the
H-AQ7, WEST alone is in position to place the final contract
based on how many Key Cards Memory holds. Memory had one,
so 6H must have some play. (Good thing it wasn't the Club
Ace, mind you--a Diamond lead could be fatal in that case!)
Compare this to any auction where West simply shows a great
hand with 3-card Heart support. East is NEVER going to make
a slam try over an sign-off in 4H.

An interesting auction. North would have done better to come
back in with a DOUBLE of 2D...in case Kenny can leave it in
(as here) or remove to 2H. 2S might even make! It is always
better to show THREE suits (i.e. a double of 2D would show
Hearts, Spades AND Clubs) than two WHILE RETAINING THE OPTION
OF PLAYING IN THE FOURTH (i.e. Diamonds, here). Maxi-flex!
FrankSto's double of 2D would be takeout because his partner
has not bid yet. Had Kenny redoubled or bid anything over
the double, Frank's double of 2D would be penalty-oriented.
Mimi49's 2nd double is penalty based, of course, but most
would remove to 3D with Hilbilly's hand. An unfortunate
result for the Space Cadets.

We all know that if you hold LENGTH in partner's long suit,
your defensive prospects go DOWN. It follows that if you
have SHORTNESS in partner's bid suit your defensive prospects
then to go UP. Hilbilly knew that Declarer would have NO
source of tricks outside Spades here. She should have
crawled up on her table and HAMMERED off 4S, collecting
1400 for her efforts. That would GAIN 13 IMPs rather than
LOSE 3 !

This was a fascinating hand. 7H is the right place to be,
looking only at the E-W cards. Unfortunately, the squeeze
does not work for Declarer here. Let me demonstrate, for
those who have difficulty envisioning squeeze endings:
East will play off ALL her Hearts after winning the Ace of
Spades. She will pitch 3 SPADES and one Club from dummy.
That means that her last 6 cards will be:
s- 7 h- gone d-AQ10 c-K10
Dummy will be reduced to: s- gone h- gone d-K752 c-A54
The reason the squeeze doesn't work is that DUMMY MUST NOW
PITCH A CARD and WHATEVER DUMMY PITCHES NORTH WILL ALSO
TOSS! Had SOUTH held North's hand he would
have to concede one or the other minor; Declarer would
simply pitch whatever suit South did NOT toss. Try it!
With no squeeze, Declarer had to play for the Jack of
Diamonds coming down in three rounds. Fortunately for
us, it didn't!
I rate this grand slam as no worse than 75%. Since grand
slams should be 70% favourites or better, this one was
a "good" one. Lucky for us it didn't make!

Already ahead in the match, Memory and JaneF should stop in
the conservative 6H. FOUR Hearts, though, is a tad TOO
conservative, given the opponents' 7H bid ! Memory should
Blackwood over 4H. It is hard to imagine a 2-over-1 response
that would NOT make 6H here! :)

Up by 46-9, the Space Cadets would have been happy to rest
on their laurels and protect this lead. Unfortunately,
Kenny had to leave, meaning that FrankSto and I were
partnered together. Frank and I have a great deal of
respect for one another, but are NOT a natural partnership.
He is a very solid, conservative player and has no regard
whatsoever for the flights of fancy one would expect from
a "Space Cadet". (Remember, we BORROWED him for this
match!) Needless to say, we did NOT do well together!
Pop quiz question, though: Which of the two of us
psyched THREE times during the second half? :)
The star performer for the Hurricanes in the 1st half
was Torra. This did NOT change in the second half.

Mimi49 could NOT be blamed for leaping to 3NT here. Indeed, if
playing Lebensohl (and I do with all regular partners) I would
bid 2NT (forcing 3C) and THEN 3NT to SHOW slam interest (which
the simple jump to 3NT would deny, BTW). Remember: when
playing Lebensohl: SLOW SHOWS, FAST DENIES. In the case of
using it over weak 2s, the commodity being SHOWN or DENIED is
SLAM INTEREST. (When used opposite pard's 1NT opening the
commodity being SHOWN or DENIED is a STOPPER in the enemy
suit).
Hilbilly had nothing close to a balancing double of 2H here.

Here we see one of my least favourite conventions, the responsive
double (of 2D), in what might be its finest light. Mind you, had
partner bid 2S he MIGHT have gotten a Diamond lead in 3S...:)

This was one of my partner's three psyches. He must have
confused his Heart TWO with the Heart TEN (they both start
with "T"). Having shown 6+Diamonds I did NOT remove his
striped-tailed-ape double of 2H. Good thing Diamonds broke
2-2, or we'd have spat up -570.
Remember: do NOT double part scores at IMPS unless you are
well behind or going to beat it to a bloody pulp. Having
made a free bid of 1S, showing 8+ HCPs, 9 HCPs does NOT
constitute "extras". :(
Some partners deal with errors differently than others.
After his psychic double backfired, my partner actually
said to ME: "I'm a passed hand. You shouldn't hang me
like that!!" :)
I said nothing in response, biting my lip so hard I drew
blood. This partnership aspect of bridge is not always
well developed among expert players. This, in turn, makes
it difficult for them to FIND partners and form LASTING
partnerships. :(

South has an awkward hand to rebid over 1S. 2H, 2S (as I bid),
3H and 3S all present themselves. I must admit, I did not
entertain the latter two (3H or 3S). :)

Another one of my partner's psyches. This one I KNEW about at
the time, but PASSED 3D anyway. Yes, I knew that 3D probably
showed Heart support, but was NOT about to let the opponents
have another chance to bid. Sure enough, they took the
"you-can-have-as-many-undoubled-undertricks-as-you-want" bait.
Game in either black suit is, of course, cold. :)
Did my partner congratulate me for my 2H overcall or the pass
of 3D? No. "That is not an overcall," he said, referring to
my 2H bid. More blood on my lip! :)

A rather lucky choice by JaneF here. I would have bid 4D and
then wondered what to do over 4S (although both a PASS or 5C
will work well). Pre-empts work...usually! :)

And here is my partner's THIRD psyche. With H-AQxx he will
penalty double 2H on board 5, but with S-AQ104 he will psyche
a pass rather than overcall 1S here. Hard to figure ! :(
Remember: there is no rule in bridge that says you cannot make
4-card overcalls!
Remember, also, that when you have length in their suit,
lead your OWN length to force declarer to ruff. Do NOT
lead singletons in order to short-ruff yourself. As bad
as the Club lead was, my PITCH of a Club was even worse.
I guess it never occured to me that partner would have
SHORTNESS rather than LENGTH in Clubs. :(
A Word About Partnership Bridge
The problems Frank and I had "meshing" are not at all
uncommon -- nor are they anyone's "fault". The problem
arose from an all-too-popular misconception that BOTH
players in the partnership have to adopt the same style.
This is simply not true. Bill Treble and I have played
effectively together for DECADES, and his bidding style
is not far removed from Frank's. The difference is that
BILL does not insist that *I* adopt the same conservative
approach that he does. Similarly, *I* do not insist that
Bill "step out of character" and bid the same way I do.
Such efforts are always doomed from the get-go.
Remember: in an effective partner you don't have to
COPY your partner's tendencies, you only have to KNOW
and RESPECT them! :)
