What?

_____ "Gators are the most fun you can have playing bridge. Yes, even more fun than Calcuttas!"

_____ Gators are a very archaic knockout tourney format, harkening back to the days of Bridge Whist. Indeed, I doubt that there has been one in the last 70 years. They dropped out of sight because they were an owner participation spectator event; Face-To-Face venues simply couldn't handle so many onlookers. Try to imagine, in the days before VuGraph and online bridge, 100 or more spectactors huddled around a single bridge table. Can't be done.

_____ As one wit put it: "Gators declined in popularity because they were too popular!"

_____ But doesn't such fan interest sound perfect for online bridge?

_____ Here is how a Gator works:

  • People buy shares in players (in our case, 1 Commentator or guest celebrity and, perhaps, hir regular student partner).

  • A knockout team event follows, with these owners making all of the decisions for their team.

  • Any team you beat becomes yours, lock, stock and barrel. That includes its players.

  • The final standings are:

    • 1st = The team that wins all of its matches

    • 2nd = Whoever lost to the Winner last

    • 3rd = Whoever lost to the Winner second last

    • 4th = Whoever lost to the Winner third last

    • 5th = Whoever lost to the Winner fourth last

_____ So even though your team is eliminated, you still have a vested interest in helping the team that eliminated yours. Indeed, you are part of that team!

_____ That is all there is to running a normal Gator. Ours would be revised slightly to encourage student player participation in the first few rounds.

_____ 16 celebrity players (or pairs) are invited. Gators are team events, but we start with 16 players (or pairs). Ours would comprise one Celebrity and, perhaps, their favourite student partner. Supporters are then encouraged to buy shares (at $50 per share) in the player (or pair) of their choice. The number of shares is unlimited, so each pair can have any number of owners.

_____ The first job of the owners is to get enough players to make up a team. Typically, the owners would find these extra players within their own ranks. There is only one restriction: No team can have more than one "Ringer" (i.e. any player with both Lehmans over 60%) in the first round. In this way a Celebrity with a low Lehman rating becomes a real bargain: the owners might be free to get anyone--Zia himself, if he's willing--to fill out the team!

_____ In order to encourage student participation in the first rounds the following restrictions on the team's total IMPs Lehmans are in place:

  • 1st Round = 210

  • 2nd Round = 220

  • 3rd Round = 230

  • 4th Round = Unlimited!

_____ The team with the most shares sold gets to pick their opponent. Second highest chooses next, etc. The teams play 10 boards, have a short break, bring in replacements (if any), then play another ten boards. Ties are broken with 2 board playoffs until there is a winner.

_____ Now the fun begins. The victorious team inherits the line-up of the vanquished. So the losing team can directly help the cause. In the second and subsequent rounds the teams can have two Ringers (typically one at each table, playing with their student partners) in play. Again, the owners of the surviving teams make all personnel decisions. There are no limits on the number of substitutions made during each round.

_____ The winners continue to gobble up their eliminated opponents (hence the term "Gator"), adding them to the fold.

_____ Consider the spectator interest that this will generate, with the owners cheering on their teams or the ones who beat their teams. Even in the final, eight teams will still have a vested interest in the outcome.

_____ For $50, the owners get to play (if they decide to) or be Non-Playing Captains ("NPCs"). One can own any number of shares in any number of teams. Unless the owners of a team come to some other agreement matters will be decided by the majority; one vote per share.

_____ You can even play as a non-voting owner by purchasing a part share. Just enter a decimal ($5 per tenth of a share) in the box beside the name of your chosen team. For example, $25 (".5" entered in the appropriate box) would buy you a half share and a place on the team of your choice.

_____ How much fun is a Gator? Consider the following facts from last year's Final Round:

  • 260 people spectated the Final

  • Many of these attendees stumbled onto it by accident

  • Many kibitzers declared it "the event of the season"

  • Spectactors provided impromptu commentary in Italian, English, French, Spanish, Polish and Russian

  • 13 of the top players on OKBridge played in the Final

  • Our "humble" Gator has emerged as the single biggest annual online bridge event in the world since the IWBC.

_____ Come help us keep history alive: the Second Annual Gator of the new century!

Where?

Only on OKBridge!

_____ If this continues to be as much fun as it was last year, though, don't be too surprised to see Gator tourneys on Swan Games and E-Bridge soon!

Why?

_____ This event is to promote online bridge teaching. All proceeds go to the Fireside Fund.

_____ There will be a trophy plaque for the first place finishers.

Who?

_____ Share purchase is open to anyone. Owners with shares in more than one team should participate in the decision making process of only one team per round.

_____ The 16 pairs will be listed below soon. If you are (or know) an expert player who would like to play please click here to email us immediately. Many seats are already reserved and the rest are going fast.

Bridgboy &
Owners' Choice
If you are looking for a solid player who will be there from start to finish you can't go wrong investing in Bob. Let the others show flash; slow and steady will win every time.
Bridgboy will play with his owners.
S
DaffyDoc &
Owners' Choice
New York expert Russel Samuel has no less than three National wins to his credit. Great players like Shawn, Irina, Warren_K, Harmon, and Irac choose to play with this guy for a very good reason--perhaps the same reason you should be investing in his stock!
DaffyDoc will play with his owners.
H
DBetter &
Owners' Choice
We often run into Dave Better when we kibitz OKBridge tourneys. The reason for this is very simple. David is a fixture at the head table. Watch for this trend to continue in the Gator.
DBetter will play with his owners.
H
DCorn &
Owners' Choice
David's "bio": "Northwest overbidder, David Corn has entered this year's festivies, too. The word on the street is that he bids so much for fear that he will have to make one of (in)famous opening leads that tend to cost his side 7-12 imps, depending on the vulnerability. In his current locale he is well known amongst all the players as 'The Man with the Golden Arm'. On a more serious note, David states that in all of his years on OKB, he has never led out of turn, bid out of turn, nor bid insufficiently (this is not to be confused with inefficiently). If his side buys enough of the contracts to keep him off the opening lead this player could be a sleeper in the event..."
Hmm. We may be getting hustled here.

DCorn will play with his owners.
H
DianeW &
Owners' Choice
Well, it simply wouldn't be a party without Diane Walker, would it? Diane taught her first bridge class in 1980. After not playing any bridge at all in the 90's she has returned to teach, play and win! She has several high finishes at National events and numerous regional wins. She loves her students and wants to make them the best they can be. She is looking forward to the Gator event. She loves OKBridge and hopes that in addition to preventing her from leading out of turn, an enhancement will force her to bid all of her slams!
DianeW will play with her owners.
S
Fredw3 &
Owners' Choice
Don't be fooled by this inveterate sandbagger's Lehmans! Fred is a wily competitor, well versed in the tricks of the trade. If you have high Lehmans yourself or if you have someone in tow who does, look no further! Fredw3 is definitely the bargain player that you are seek.
Fredw3 will play with his owners.
S
Harmon
& Owners' Choice
Beer isn't the only heady thing brewing in Milwaukee. Popular teacher and player "Harmon" Edgars will be more than just a crowd pleaser. Because Harmon has deftly managed to keep his Lehmans just under the "Ringer" mark his owners will be free to bring in anyone they like to play with a student partner at the other table. Does that give you any ideas?
Harmon will play with his owners.
S
Irac
& Owners' Choice
Ira Chorush won 2 national championships in the 1980's and had many other high finishes in national events. Due to the exigencies of earning a living, he played very little bridge during the 1990s. Depressed by all this work and no play, he has returned to the bridge world for the new millenium.
Irac will play with his owners.
S

JackL
& Cielle
Jacques "JackL" Laliberte was a member of the 1989 Canadian Bermuda Bowl team. As a Quebecois bridge writer he is a veritable francophone Oswald Jacoby. Partnered with his prize student, Noella "Cielle" Brule, Jacques rates to be among the favourites.
S
Kaltica
& Moogal?
Colin Ward might not impress many with his card play but if he doesn't exhaust his bag of bidding tricks this team should go far. Janice "Moogal" Kofman will is available to partner Colin if the owners decide to insert her into the lineup. Someday "Moogal" will play in the Venice Cup. You heard that here first!
Kaltica will play with his owners or with Moogal.
S
Mugwump &
Owners' Choice
Mervin Key of Houston, Texas played for the North American team against the vaunted Italian Blue Team (and other greats, of course) in the 1962 World Team-of-Four Championship at the Barbizon-Plaza in NYC. He came in second in the 1960 Reisinger with Bobby Nail, Oswald Jacoby, and Curtis Smith. Mervin is also the lone surviving member of the team that won the won the 1964 Reisinger with Harold Rockaway, John Gerber (yes, that Gerber) and Paul Hodge. Don't straddle the fence here. Grab this guy! Just bear in mind, though, that when you do take Mervin the eyes of Texas are upon you. No pressure, though.
Mugwump will play with his owners.
S
PamA
In Pam's own words: "Played very seriously in the 1970's with my last serious event playing for the US in the New Orleans Olympiad (1978 I think). I have returned back to bridge after many years and truly enjoying the many friends and wonderful players from around the world that I have found on OKbridge."
We're certainly glad to have her--as her owners will be, I'm sure!

Pama will play with her owners.
H
Pooka
& Owners' Choice
The inimitable Dann Kramer in a Gator? Hey, what could be more fun than that? Well, yes, winning a Gator with Dann Kramer would be, but I certainly wouldn't rule that out!
Pooka will play with his owners.
S
Seligman &
Pef
What? You get both of these Aces? Yup. With combined IMP Lehmas of about 117, though, they'll need some underrated owners for the first few rounds.
In case you forgot, Martin E.P. Seligman won the first OKBridge World Championship with Paul Soloway, and partnered Eric Rodwell to second in the Blue Ribbon Pairs in 1998. And he insists that he is the weaker half of this pair! Peter Friedland came tied for 3rd in the 2002 Grand National Teams and won more Pond Points than anyone in 2001 and 2002! Can you spell F-A-V-O-U-R-I-T-E-S?
H
Tuna &
Owners' Choice
One thing is for certain: Tony "Tuna" Reus will draw a crowd! The personable manager of OKBridge is more than just glamour, though. If you don't buy stock in this guy you may never forgive yourself. Don't say we never told you so!
Tuna will play with his owners.
H
Wintaka
& Owners' Choice
How can you go wrong with the current Canadian Pairs champion and a perennial finalist in the CNTCs? Take Bill Treble. No thought required.
Wintaka will play with his owners.

Questions?

Can we buy shares after round one if our team is knocked out?
  • Yes, you can purchase non-voting shares at $50 a piece, but only in the team which beat yours. Hence, you must have purchased share(s) in a team before the event.

  • These "late" shares do qualify you for the winners' trophy plaque if your new team wins all of its matches. Only the original owners of the team can make decisions for that team during the event, though.

What if I buy shares in one pair and change my mind? Can I switch?

  • Yes, you can switch share ownership at any time up to midnight, Pacific Time, March 28th (the night before the Gator).

  • More pairs will be added to our player's list until we have 16 pairs and substitutions may be necessary. So don't be shy about making early share purchases; you can always change your selection before the deadline.

  • If a pair cannot make it and a substitution is necessary, you will have the option of switching your ownership to another pair up until game time.

Can owners hire a pro to play on their team?
  • Yes, subject to the "ringer" limitation. If the celebrity player has Lehmans under 60% the owners can get anyone to augment their team--by fair means or foul.

Can we participate if we don't buy shares?

  • Yes. Some teams will be looking for players, especially for the first round. If you'd like to play as a "fill-in", please click here to email Moogal. She will put you onto a team which needs you.

Will there be someone there to explain these rules as we go along?

  • Yes, organizers will go from table to table during play to explain the rules, answer questions and encourage the owners to get their players ready to play.

If you have any other questions, please click here
to email the organizers at moocake@aol.com.
