What?

"Gators are the most fun you can have playing bridge. Yes, even more fun than Calcuttas!"

Gators are a very archaic knockout tourney format, harkening back to the days of Bridge Whist. Indeed, I doubt that there has been one in the last 70 years. They dropped out of sight because they were an owner participation spectator event; Face-To-Face venues simply couldn't handle so many onlookers. Try to imagine, in the days before VuGraph and online bridge, 100 or more spectactors huddled around a single bridge table. Can't be done.

As one wit put it: "Gators declined in popularity because they were too popular!"

But doesn't such fan interest sound perfect for online bridge?

Here is how a Gator works:

  • People buy shares in players (in our case, 1 Commentator or guest celebrity and, perhaps, hir regular student partner).

  • A knockout team event follows, with these owners making all of the decisions for their team.

  • Any team you beat becomes yours, lock, stock and barrel. That includes its players.

  • The final standings are:

    • 1st = The team that wins all of its matches

    • 2nd = Whoever lost to the Winner last

    • 3rd = Whoever lost to the Winner second last

    • 4th = Whoever lost to the Winner third last

    • 5th = Whoever lost to the Winner fourth last

So even though your team is eliminated, you still have a vested interest in helping the team that eliminated yours. Indeed, you are part of that team!

That is all there is to running a normal Gator. Ours would be revised slightly to ensure at least 50% student player participation.

16 celebrity players (or pairs) are invited. Gators are team events, but we start with 16 players (or pairs). Ours would comprise one Celebrity and, perhaps, one "Student" (for our purposes, "Student" means at least one Lehman rating under 55%). Our supporters are then encouraged to buy shares (at $50 per share) in the pair of their choice. The number of shares is unlimited, so each pair can have any number of owners.

The first job of the owners is to get enough players to make up a team. Typically, the owners would find these extra players within their own ranks. There is only one restriction: No team can have more than one "Ringer" (i.e. any player with both Lehmans over 57%) in the first round. In this way a Celebrity with a Lehman rating under 57% becomes a real bargain: the owners are free to get anyone--Zia himself, if he's willing--to fill out the team!

The team with the most shares sold gets to pick their opponent. Second highest chooses next, etc. The teams play 10 boards, have a short break, bring in replacements (if any), then play another ten boards. Ties are broken with 2 board playoffs until there is a winner.

Now the fun begins. The victorious team inherits the line-up of the vanquished. So the losing team can directly help the cause. In the second and subsequent rounds the teams can have two Ringers (one at each table, playing with their student partners) in play. Again, the owners of the surviving teams make all personnel decisions. There are no limits on the number of substitutions made during each round.

The winners continue to gobble up their eliminated opponents (hence the term "Gator"), adding them to the fold. Consider the spectator interest that this will generate, with the owners cheering on their teams or the ones who beat their teams. Even in the final, eight teams will still have a vested interest in the outcome.

For $50, the owners get to play (if they decide to) or be Non-Playing Captains ("NPCs"). One can own any number of shares in any number of teams. Unless the owners of a team come to some other agreement matters will be decided by the majority; one vote per share.

Thank you for helping us make history: the first Gator of the new century!

Bridgboy
& BCCPave
Bob Lavin will try his sound, "stodgy" methods out with recent life master Janie Moser. They have been playing together for over a year and a half so have all those E.S.P. signals down pat. If you are looking for a solid partnership who will be there from start to finish you can't go wrong investing in this pair. Let the others show flash; slow and steady will win every time.
S
Captain
& Lenny1
Andy Anderson who has been an instructor of the game for 30 years and has to his credit won regionals too numerous to list. He has carefully selected the cream of his impressive list of students to do battle. His partner is none other than "Lenny1". There is a reason that "1" is attached to Lenny's name. He's a young upstart hailing from Las Vegas whose motto is "Take no prisoners". When his hometown learned of Lenny entering with the Captain, there was a sudden stir in the Vegas betting. No longer will basketball betting be the main interest of oddsmakers! Vegas will be backing the hometown boy in the Gator!
S
Ecofin
& JCCasper
You gotta be kidding me? These two? Both of them? On the same starting team? Yup. Dale "Ecofin" Bails and his regular expert partner, JCCasper, should get this team off to a fine start. If you aren't familiar with this pair, check the tourney winners listings. You won't have to scroll down very far to find them!
H
Harmon
& TBA
Beer isn't the only heady thing brewing in Milwaukee. Popular teacher and player "Harmon" Edgars will be more than just a crowd pleaser. Because Harmon has deftly managed to keep his Lehmans just under the "Ringer" mark his owners will be free to bring in anyone they like to play with a student partner at the other table. Does that give you any ideas?
S
JackL
& Cielle
Jacques "JackL" Laliberte was a member of the 1989 Canadian Bermuda Bowl team. As a Quebecois bridge writer he is a veritable francophone Oswald Jacoby. Partnered with his prize student, Noella "Cielle" Brule, Jacques rates to be among the favourites.
S
Kaltica
& Moogal?
Colin Ward won't impress many with his card play but if he doesn't exhaust his bag of bidding tricks this team should go far. Janice "Moogal" Kofman will is available to partner Colin if the owners decide to insert her into the lineup. Someday "Moogal" will play in the Venice Cup. You heard that here first!
S
Marshall
& TBA
Marshall Miles. Yes, that Marshall Miles. What? Did you think there would be two of them? Can you say "prohibitive favourite"?
Partner to be announced soon.
H
McPhee
& TBA
Bob McPhee has been playing professionally for decades and has established himself as the "Terror of East Coast" by cutting a swath of Regional and National wins up and down the Atlantic waterside. This charter Fireside commentator is no stranger to the winner's circle.
Partner to be announced soon.
H
O_Bones
& TBA
This charter Fireside commentator is the author of "Shadow in the Bridge World". Having played professionally for decades there is nothing about the game that this guy hasn't mastered. His greatest concern is that we get all three of his names onto the trophy: Mike Dorn Wiss.
Partner to be announced soon.
H
Onedown
& Lionroar
Yes, we have "RT" himself back for a rare guest appearance! Richard "Onedown Ternouth (aka "RT" or "Turnip") co-founded the Firesides with Kaltica. Playing with the up-and-coming Richard "Lionroar" White, RT has no intention of "going home early".
H
PamA
and DavidRG
In Pam's own words: "Played very seriously in the 1970's with my last serious event playing for the US in the New Orleans Olympiad (1978 I think). I have returned back to bridge after many years and truly enjoying the many friends and wonderful players from around the world that I have found on OKbridge."
We're certainly glad to have her--as her owners will be, I'm sure!
Pam will be skillfully partnered by the legendary David "DavidRG" Greenlees. Given David's bidding style, we predict that this pair will miss no games and make few overtricks.
H
Raija
and TBA
A wonderful finish is guaranteed with Raija on your team. Raija will make her presence known and show you why we Firesiders were so delighted to have her and Pomo come aboard.
Partner to be announced soon.
S
Tuna and
Owners' Choice
One thing is for certain: Tony "Tuna" Reus will draw a crowd! The personable manager of OKBridge is more than just glamour, though. If you don't buy stock in this guy you may never forgive yourself. Don't say we never told you so!
Tuna will play with his owners.
H
Unicorn
and Pringle
We think that this dark horse entry may be trying to sneak into first place under our radar. Bruce Unicorn McLain has been a tournament player and instructor on and off since 1964. He learned the game from none other than Charles Goren (and other noteworthies) himself. A creator of the long defunct "Wisconsin Club System", Bruce still likes multi-valued forcing bids. His partner will be our very own Pringle. Jenna has been a student of Unicorn's for the last three years and puts up well with Bruce's "strange" conventions. For those not attuned to Celtic and Welsh mythology, "Pringle" is the name of a giant that rises up to do battle on behalf of the underdog. That is exactly what might happen here!
H
Wintaka
& Sam143
How can you go wrong with the current Canadian Pairs champion and a perennial finalist in the CNTCs? Take Bill Treble. No thought required. Bill will be ably partnered by Sue "Sam143" Moore, who directs two games in her home town of Colorado Springs.

Questions?

Can we buy shares after round one if our team is knocked out?
  • Yes, you can purchase non-voting shares at $50 a piece, but only in the team which beat yours. Hence, you must have purchased share(s) in a team before the event.

  • These "late" shares do qualify you for the first place prizes and your name on the winners' trophy if your new team wins all of its matches. Only the original owners of the team can make decisions for that team during the event, though.

What if I buy shares in one pair and change my mind? Can I switch?

  • Yes, you can switch share ownership at any time up to midnight, Pacific Time, February 15th (the night before the Gator).

  • More pairs will be added to our player's list until we have 16 pairs and substitutions may be necessary. So don't be shy about making early share purchases; you can always change your selection before the deadline.

  • If a pair cannot make it and a substitution is necessary, you will have the option of switching your ownership to another pair up until game time.

Can owners hire a pro to play on their team?
  • Yes, subject to the "ringer" limitation. If the celebrity player has Lehmans under 57% the owners can get anyone to augment their team--by fair means or foul.

Will there be someone there to explain these rules as we go along?

  • Yes, organizers will go from table to table during play to explain the rules, answer questions and encourage the owners to get their players ready to play.
