This was a most entertaining match. "Eels" captain Kjell
Fagerbakke was playing as "Hall" while his partner (with whom
he was playing for only the second time) played as "Kjell".
Dave Brough, in particular,
enjoyed this match.
The comments that you see between the hands are intended for
Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as you enjoy these
records of the decisive hands in this match.

This is a good hand to demonstrate the concept of "lead
discovery". Imagine if, instead of 4H, North had pulled the
penalty double to only 3H (as North did at the other table).
Imagine then that South bid 3NT. Against THAT auction,
South should NEVER lead his broken, ratty Spade suit. The
opponents have all but tipped their hands, marking Declarer
with GREAT spades. Instead, West would have to come with a
"surprise" lead...say, a Diamond...with the idea that
PARTNER will then lead spades THROUGH Declarer. After all,
is it realistic for West to hope for East to hold S-Ax or
S-Qx after a penalty double at the 2 level?
So, does this mean West gained nothing from overcalling 2S?
HARDLY! West learned from his 2S overcall that it was
NOT safe to lead a Spade. So, while the 2S overcall may
be lead DIRECTING from EAST's point of view (i.e. East
is told to lead a Spade from HIS side), it is lead
DISCOVERING from West's perspective.
As you can see from the result, a Spade lead was not
a very good idea against a SUIT contract, either. :(

When trumps break badly one of your key counter-strategies is
to establish your long side suit and force THEM to ruff with
their trump length. Inexplicably, South played every suit
BUT her length (Clubs) and was defeated one.
Notice that DECLARER doesn't want to draw trumps since she
would need them to ruff Spade losers in many instances and
because she wants to use the H-Ace as the re-entry to those
Clubs PROVIDING THE LAST TRUMP is being drawn. Hence, the
need to force East to ruff a Club.

A fascinating hand: with very careful play N-S can actually
make SIX Hearts (ruff a Spade, double-finesse in Diamonds,
duck a trump, trump to the Ace and ruff a Diamond to set
them up, re-entering with a Club ruff). But not only did
N-S not reach FOUR Hearts, Hearts were never mentioned!
It is my style to jump overcall with weak suits, so *I*
would have bid 2H over 1C.
The East hand went a little overboard. Yes, the Black
suits are very good, but the 4 HCPs in Hearts may not
"pull their weight". It is worth a free 2S bid and nothing
more. Knowing that his 3 HCPs in Diamonds were useless,
West should, of course, pass 3S immediately. North's double
was adventurous; I usually see a blue card (i.e. a beaver)
hit the table whenever *I* double strong auctions like this;
then I watch the opponents chalk up +1430 the easy way! :)
Lacking entries to his effective 4 HCP hand, Declarer
should have UNBLOCKED the King of Hearts from dummy so
that his Queen would constitute an entry to his hand. With
this, he could finesse in trumps and hold it to -500. A
very rocky start for the Space Cadets! :(

Same auction, same error at trick 3, failing to unblock in Hearts.
To me, the failure to jump overcall 2H with the South hand is
odd. I come from the "overcall with STUFF, jump overcall
with...[something else that starts with "s"]" school of bidding.
While I recognize that SAYC and 2/1 pards prefer GOOD SUITS for
jump overcalls, I think this blurs the distinction between
bidding and cue-bidding. With MY partner's, a jump overcall
does NOT suggest a lead of the bid suit. If you want your
suit lead, bid it SIMPLY. Remember, though, that this is
MY approach and MY approach ALONE. (Of course, we have to
alert the opponents to this non-standard tendency).

Memory's failure to make a negative double after 1H-2C was quite
reasonable, given her poor support for Spades and the uselessness
of her Club Queen. Hearing BOTH opponents bid No Trump, though,
North MUST lead a "surprise" Heart here! Still, the "magic" 4H
contract at the other table guarantees this hand will be another
setback for the Space Cadets. :(

I REALLY HATE limit raises by a passed hand, and THIS HAND shows
you why. Maynard and Memory are playing for the first time and
probably didn't discuss DRURY. A Reverse Drury 2C response by
Maynard would have fetched a very discouraging 2D ("I don't have
a real opener") rebid from South. N-S would stop in 2H and gain
3 IMPs for +110 instead of losing 3 for -100. At MATCHPOINTS
this would be even worse: the difference between a tie for top
and a tie for bottom (with many passouts in between).

This hand was a well-deserved 13 IMPs for the Cadets. Had Clubs
broke 2-2 the hand would be over quickly. WITHOUT the Clubs
coming home Wintaka needs BOTH red Kings onside for entry
reasons. Take the 40% chance of a 2-2 Club break plus the
12.5% chance of a stiff Club Queen, add the chances of both
red Kings being onside if the Clubs DON'T run (25% of the
remaining 47.5%) and you have a 64-65% slam. Since you only
need 50%, we belong in slam.
4NT was QUANTITATIVE, 5C was NATURAL here, according to
E-W's bidding methods. This is an auction you may wish to
discuss with your favourite partner(s). *I* would have
taken 4NT as Blackwood and 5C as showing 0 (or 4) Aces.

Playing "Defensive Doubles", Wintaka's 1NT bid promised "scattered
defensive values" in support of Spades. This warned RBrough not
to go crazy sacrificing. Looking at good defensive prospects
himself (and flat distribution), Brough wisely chose to defend
3D rather than bid 3S.
Wintaka is one of the world's BEST opening leaders. I know,
because I am one of the world's WORST--which is one reason why
he is one of MY favourite partners. Hearing his LHO take a
choice between Declarer's two suits Wintaka immediately led
a trump--consistent with the Theory of Reluctant Choice. A
well earned IMP !

One of the things that experts often debate is whether the 4-3
fit (Clubs, here) plays better than the 5-2 fit. I side with
the 4-3 fitters ONLY IF the 3-card trump length can score TWO
ruffs. Here, East may be able to score ALL SEVEN trumps on
a cross ruff in he loses a Diamond early and the defence
doesn't lead a trump. In Clubs, one makes 9; in Spades, 8--and
only if Spades happen to divide 3-3! Bear this in mind the
next time you hear partner open 1S and rebid 2H, catching
you with 2-3 in the majors. :)
Over-riding all of this, on THIS hand bidding Spades keeps
the opponents from bidding their HEARTS. Hence, 2S! :)

Maynard made a nice lead-directing 3C bid over the takeout double
of Memory's 2D opening. This inspired E-W to defend 3D. At trick
8 Memory inexplicably neglected to ruff in her hand only, so as to
pull trumps and escape for -500. :(

An elegant slambidding sequence by E-W here. 4NT was Key Card
Blackwood with Hearts as trumps. 5C (0 or 3) pinpointed the
missing Key Card (in this case, the trump KING). 5D asked
for the trump QUEEN, which 5H would have denied. 5S SHOWED
the Heart Queen while cuebidding the Spade Ace (in case
Wintaka was dreaming of SEVEN Hearts). Without such ambitions,
Wintaka stopped in the 75% 6H contract. And, lo and behold,
it MADE !

Alright, who IS this Maynard guy? How does anyone overcall at
the TWO level in a FOUR CARD suit and catch partner with 4-card
support AND A SINGLETON ? Time to check this guy for wires! :)
Actually, this is an application of one of the more advanced
tactics in the game. I am reluctant to explain it, lest any
of you try at home on your own! :)
This ploy is known as the Richter Rule. You bid your shorter,
stronger suit and, if the opponent's X registers ABOVE 3.5 on
the Richter scale, you RUN LIKE A RABBIT to your longer, weaker
suit. In this way, if you don't get a chance to bid again
partner will know which suit you REALLY want led (i.e. Spades
here, NOT Diamonds).
But, again, this requires the master's touch. :)

While this was a push board, it illustrated several points of
interest. First, we saw the Richter Rule employed at the
other table. Here we see Wintaka waiting until the opponents
have found their real fit in 2S after a DONT 2D (showing
Diamonds and a higher ranked suit, which South's 2H bid
went fishing for) overcall. Wintaka then looked at his good
Club spots and competed to 3C. He deserved a better fate
than to be doubled and set, of course.
While Wintaka's actions were ENTIRELY reasonable, another
East might conclude that, with AT MOST 7 Diamonds between
them, the opponents will probably NOT stay in 2D. Hence,
the time to act would be NOW, directly over 2D. "No sense
waitin' for a bus that ain't commin'!" Playing
Lebensohl, Wintaka would bid 2C to force 1NT Opener to bid
3C. North would then be in an awkward situation, and
MIGHT err in choosing to compete directly over 3C BEFORE
giving South a chance to hammer 3C off! In Winnipeg
parlance, this is called being "cross-fired" (i.e. forced
to bid BEFORE knowing whether partner wants to double
or not) or being "WHOBbed" (i.e. "Wrong Hand On Bid",
forced to bid when one's partner would be in a MUCH BETTER
position to make the decision).

This was a very lucky break for us. Maynard must have
considered his 5-card Heart support when he pulled the
double of their cold 4S. And, of course, once doubled
in 4S the opponents are very unlikely to bid 5S. :)

Here, again, our side tries a 5H slam try over 4S. Kenny
(Ksired) knows that only one person on our side can bid
4S and that would be him. This left me in a quandary,
since Kenny's hand could be MUCH better. I could:
- Cuebid 5C or 5D (one does NOT pull pard from 4S to
5-of-a-minor here!). This would tend to suggest
that I need to hear partner cuebid a control for
6S. With control of ALL THREE suits, 5C or 5D
would not be correct with my hand.
- 4NT Blackwood? No. That would unilaterally commit
the partnership to slam if we have 3+ Aces.
- 5S? No, that asks for a control in THEIR suit, Hearts.
- 5H: The general cuebid slam try.
Kenny was lucky to make 5S, of course. Left to his own
devices he would undoubtedly lose a trick in each
non-trump suit. South panicked, think Kenny would
establish Diamonds (which he might!). South should
return a SPADE, leaving Declarer to find his own way.

I butchered this hand. I stomped on the Diamond lead, unblocked
my Heart Queen and played S-A and then to the S-K on dummy.
Kjell showed out in Spades. Seeing Hearts break 3-3 I should
have played a fourth Heart, forcing South to ruff with his
trump winner while I pitched a Club. But on this particular
hand the defence would still beat me by playing three rounds
of Clubs, scoring an uppercut on the third round. :(

An unfortunate lead by South. In general, it is best to
lead your partnership's LENGTH against No Trump AND SUIT
contracts. This is especially true when you, yourself,
have considerable length in THEIR trump suit. With 4
Spades South should be trying to short-ruff Declarer,
not herself, by leading DIAMONDS here.

This is a very good hand to illustrate Lebensohl (although I am
quite light for my bidding here). After our 1NT is overcalled
(with 2S here) my 2NT asks partner to bid 3C. I could then
sign off by PASSing 3C or by rebidding 3D or 3H. My 3S cuebid
promises a Spade stopper (which an IMMEDIATE 3S cuebid would
have denied) and shows interest in the unbid major (Hearts here).
Remember: SLOW shows a stopper, FAST denies one.
3NT was much easier for KSired to BID than to play! South
he could have beaten 3NT had he kept his 2 Spades--one Spade
for each Diamond entry he owns!

Robber should have PASSed the 3H, invitation, of course.
Neither his HAND nor his Hearts could be much worse for
a 2-level free bid. Personally, I prefer a negative
double to 2H here. LOE would then reply 2D, allowing
Robber to show the Hearts THEN. This would still be forcing,
of course. Loe would raise to 3H, allowing Robber to PASS.
That said, 4H should be MADE here. Robber embarked on a wierd
dummy reversal strategy. Better to ruff his Spade losers with
dummy's SHORT trumps. Instead of over-ruffing at trick 5, he
should PITCH his last Club. Win the Spade return with the
Ace and ruff a Spade ON DUMMY. Play a Club off the table
and either RUFF or pitch the fourth Spade if North plays low.
If North COVERS the Club Queen Robber can ruff his last Spade
on the table and concede a Heart trick.

Here good hand evaluation and restraint wins the day. Memory
PASSed her partner's jump preference in Diamonds. She knew

2S was a "negative" (i.e. non-forcing) free bid. 3D did
NOT show extra strength (as Maynard's jump to 3D at
Memory's table had). So WHY did Hall raise Diamonds?
Kenny knew he had at least 2 and probably 3 tricks against
any red suit contract, so he started hammering at the 4H
level, slobbering at the thought of them correcting to 5D.
I surprised everyone (including myself) by actually HAVING

E-W are vulnerable, so Maynard applies the Moron's Maxim
to BRILLIANT effect here. Memory's VERY Unusual 2NT ("for
the minors") propelled Maynard all the way up to the 7D
level, sacrificing against whatever the opponents were
confident bidding. 7D would've been down SEVEN, most
likely. But...wait a minute...
When the opponents sacrifice at the 7-level like this,
one passes to show FIRST round control AND interest in
bidding seven (otherwise you double). East held the
Diamond Ace, yes, but the Diamond King is somewhat
wasted on offence (i.e. in 7S), so he is NOT interested
in 7S. Robber should DOUBLE and collect his 1700.

In with the Diamond King at trick one, I SHOULD have played
a Spade to the Ace and another back to my Jack before attacking
the Hearts. I reasoned that if Hall held a small singleton
he could've led it and set me immediately. It IS important
that I TRY to establish Hearts, since they may provide enough
pitches so that I don't need to try the Club finesse. Seeing
that Hearts would NOT provide me with two pitches, I took
the Club hook and held my breath...
A VERY LUCKY 17 IMP pickup. :)

Here is a lesson in NOT bidding your distribution TWICE. Robber
waded in with 3D (when *2NT* should show the same Diamond suit,
by the way). Loe bid 3S KNOWING that Robber could NOT have
a third Spade. Not only did Robber not PASS 3S but he didn't
RAISE it or CORRECT 4D doubled to 4S either! On most 3-2
Spade breaks 4S would actually MAKE while 4D went for "sticks
and wheels".
* Whenever you have overcalled and the opponents have competed
in 2-of-a-major a 2NT rebid by you CANNOT be natural (since
you would have overcalled 1NT on the PREVIOUS round). Instead,
it shows 4 cards in the suit immediately above the one you bid
earlier. 2NT (instead of 3D) here, then, would show 4 Diamonds
while a balancing Double of 2S would've shown 4 Hearts. This
treatment allows partner to stop in 3-of-your-1st-bid suit
(3C here) if lacking a fit for the second suit.

Kenny is the master of the "Hemingway Pre-empt": "Ask not
for whom partner pre-empts, he pre-empts THEE!" Undaunted,
I trotted out a feature-asking 2NT. Kenny's 3S showed a
featureless minimum. At IMPs I could never explain NOT
bidding game, so I braved 4S. At MatchPoints, of course, I
would PASS 3S in an eyelash.
One of the MANY advantages of playing with a steady partner
is knowing their tendencies. Knowing my partner's, I had
to give SERIOUS thought to passing 3S. :)

Robber must have mismoused his final pass here. If Loe had
Hearts only and a minimum he'd have bid 3H WITHOUT the 3D
prelude.

Traditional bridge players open 5-5 MINIMUM Black 2-suiters
with 1C, with the idea of rebidding Spades twice. I hoped
to show a MAXIMUM 5-5 Black 2-suiter by JUMPING to 2S and
then rebidding 3S. Kenny thought that this showed 6+Clubs
and leapt to 5C rather than 4S or 3NT. Lacking any red
Aces, of course, he should bid 3NT here. And, since 5C
will require solid spades anyway, he should prefer 4S to 5C.

2D by North was "inverted", showing game-forcing values. This
is a great hand for "LOTUS": Lower Of Two Usually Stronger.
Because my Spades were stronger than my Hearts I did NOT bid
3D, Michaels--even though I clearly intended to bid up to the
3-level. Whenever partner uses a 2-suited overcall such as
Michaels or the Unusual 2NT you should assume that the LOWER
ranked suit is likely the STRONGER suit. Otherwise, Overcaller
should bid their suits naturally, as I did here. A Spade lead
would have beaten 5D here...as it did at the other table.

I lost my mind here. I pushed the opponents into a contract

going to be ONSIDE for Declarer's powerful hand. Had I

Kenny's 1S opening bid here looks like pure madness--especially
knowing that we play weak 2s. But Kenny (and I, by the way)
figured we were down at this point in the match and needed a
swing to make things close. (As it turned out, our calculations
were WAY off; Memory and Maynard had earned us a PROHIBITIVE
lead already!)
"Why," you might ask, "did the defence NOT play Clubs when they
were in?" BECAUSE KENNY WAS `MARKED' WITH THE CLUB ACE FOR HIS
1S OPENING BID ! :)
