1S was natural and non-forcing in our methods. But even with
a perfect fit for my long Clubs, 3NT would likely be doubled
for a Spade lead and defeated. Frankly, neither of us
considered game, though.

South's 3C was adventurous, as was 3NT. Is 3C forcing here?
This is definitely a question you would want to discuss with
your favourite partner: is a new suit forcing if the enemy
has bid a suit? *I* prefer to play it as non-forcing, with
only a jump in a new suit or a cuebid as being forcing.

It is very difficult to bid 7S here, but jumping to 6S is
certainly NOT the way to go about it! Remember: take
things SLOWLY when you have so much room for exploration.
Start with 3D and then, over partner's 3S, cuebid 4S. If
partner cuebids 4H you can Blackwood and then, over partner's
5D bid (1 Ace), bid 5H to ask for the Spade Queen. When
partner then bids beyond 5S, showing the Queen, you might
risk 7S. Partner's Diamond holding was a disappointment (she
COULD have had D-xxxx), but 7S is still a reasonable gamble.

This was not one of my finer doubles. I just couldn't
understand how East could bid 5D to play and then press
on to 6S over the sign-off in 5S. I also didn't think
my team mates would find it if it DID make. :(

Let me see. This one required the C-King onside (50%),
Clubs 3-3 (36%), the Diamond King onside (50%) AND the
Spade King onside (50%). By my calculations, that's
just over 4%. The only thing one can do in these
instances is to keep your concentration and not go overboard
on subsequent hands trying to make up for it. As
Maynard says, when you "swing" (i.e. take anti-percentage
plays in the hopes of generating big numbers) you only
dig a bigger hole!

Here South went a little overboard, expecting me to have 12 HCPs
AND a shortness in Hearts for my free bid of 3S. With little
more than his free 2S bid, South should pass & hope to make 3S!
Such disasters can be constructive, though. After this hand,
my partner and I discussed the possibility of using a double
of 3H here to support Spades while NOT inviting 4S, whereas a
direct 3S bid would be more ambitious. Many play the double
versus the raise the other way around (i.e. the "competitive
double"). Again, discuss this with your favourite partner.

Remember: PASSing and THEN bidding a suit shows a decent
hand but a WEAK suit. My 3S bid was predicated on the
fact that neither opponent was showing Spades and they
could almost certainly make a game. Note my length in
RHO's suit (Hearts). This means that my partner will
be able to over-ruff Hearts if necessary. As it turned
out, 4H was cold and 4S might only go down ONE! A very
fortunate reward for N-S's very aggressive competing! :)

I would prefer a THREE Spade bid by South to a mere 2S here.
This follows the "Law of Total Tricks" (i.e. in competition
bid as many tricks as trumps--9 Spades, 9 tricks).
This may or may not allay North's fears of trump losers in
4S. Still, it is very tough to find the 4S sacrifice here.

Partner's Unusual 2NT overcall caught me with "an embarassment
of riches". Should I aim for 4S or 5D? I began with a cuebid
of 3H. Had partner PASSed the raise to 4H around to me I
was planning on bidding 4S. Since I COULD have bid 4S
DIRECTLY rather than taking the "scenic route" with the 3H
cuebid, I would thus be showing that I have ANOTHER place to
play the hand if partner does not have 2 or 3 Spades. When
partner bid 4NT in front of me, though, I gave up on Spades!

Here West "grabbed the bull by the horns" and Blackwooded

in this case) should seize the initiative and run with it.

Doubling a part score at IMPs is risky business. I would
want MUCH better spots than H-Q632. When West returned
the H-J at trick 2 to limit my ruffs in Dummy, I ducked to
my H-Ace so that I would be ruffing with SMALL Hearts. On
the S-5 it does not help West to rise with the Ace because
it promotes my S-K and S-Q and because he does not have a
second trump to play! After tossing the S-Q8 on the C-KQ
I needed to develop a way to get back to my hand after
my first ruff. Towards this end, I led the D-10, hoping
that West started with D-AK or that East would duck. East
should, of course, rise with the D-A here and play a trump.
Once East ducked the Diamond, I scored my two Spade ruffs
and exited with a Club, endplaying East in trumps for
an overtrick. Routine. :)

I do think South should raise the 1H overcall to 2H immediately,
as my partner did at the other table. This does not show a
great hand, since South could have cuebid 2C. North would not
need much more than he has to make 4H legitimately.

It is rarely correct to compete over 3H, when the opponents
are taking maximum risk (i.e. 3H instead of 2H) for minimum
gain (i.e. a game bonus in 4H). Here, though, 4C will
only go down when 3H or even 4H will make. Hence, 4C is
a good "2-way" bid--either a make or a good sacrifice.

BIDDING 3NT without a Heart stopper is unsafe, but not as
wild as SITTING in 3NT DOUBLED with a safe place to run
to (4C here). For this reason, West's double is quite a
risk. If they had run from 3NT doubled (as they should)
E-W would have traded their +200 for -130.

Here's the rule: if you're NOT going to bid slam when your side
has 3 of the 4 Aces (or 4 of the 5 Key Cards) don't bother
Blackwooding in the first place!

With 1st or second round control in all the suits and a GREAT
fit for Diamonds West leaps to 4NT, Blackwood. Myself, I
would wonder about a CLUB loser here and perhaps start with
a forcing 2C bid, followed by a cuebid, then a diamond raise.
West needs to know about a possible Club loser here. When
you've got room, USE IT! (Principle of Slow Arrival.)

Remember: DEVALUE your hand when you do not have a fit
for partner. Notice that with TEN HCPs and a GOOD 6-card
minor North did NOT entertain thoughts of game here.

The best time to lead a singleton is when you have a King
or Ace of trump and a partner who is marked for an entry or
two. West's hand fit the bill here. West then put partner
on lead with a Heart and then an underlead of her D-Ace.
The C-7 at trick four was East's lowest Club, calling for the
Diamond return from West. Great defence!

A nice finish by the Cadets: down by 14 they picked up
FORTY FIVE IMPs in these last FOUR boards!
