An explanation is in order here. We, the Space Cadets,
challenged the East Dragons to this Riko Ladder Match.
Unfortunately, only THREE of their members showed up on time
to play! Since we had six players, we "lent" them one of our
sit-out players -- me! -- for the first half of our match.
This was a new pressure situation for me, since any failure
to play well might raise eyebrows.
The comments that you see between the hands are intended for
Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as you enjoy these
records of the decisive hands in this match.

Is the South hand an opener? There are only 11 HCPs here,
and three of them are the stiff D-K. The 5-card major
is attractive, as is the 3-card Spade holding. But it is
the TENS that, for me, tilted the balance in favour of
opening 1H rather than passing...

...but, of course, not everyone agrees that the South hand

My insistence on having TENs for my opening would have been
very prescient had the S-Q been OFFside. The Club TEN
allows me to pitch a Spade loser from dummy without
requiring a finesse. :)

Largely because of my partner's interesting PASS of 2NT here,
I chose to bid only 3S rather than a "counter-pre-empting"
4S, as we saw at the other table. And a good thing, too!
My partner, "genius", says that he ALMOST made a slam try
over my THREE Spades and would have LEAPT to slam had I
jumped to 4S on my own!
With 5-and-a-half losers in my hand, 4S could have been
disastrous opposite a hand with nothing but secondary
minor honours. And you certainly don't want partner
to get TOO excited!
I *do* think partner should double 2NT, though, in case
*I* happen to have a lot of Clubs. Switch my Clubs with
dummy's and we could do some serious damage to 3C or 3D!
This is a common theme when the opponents make a 2- or
3-suited artificial call: TRAP PASS (intending to come back
with a penalty X) only if you hold ALL of the overcaller's
suits; DOUBLE (or redouble) the artificial bid if you
can penalize all but one of their suits (this asks pard
if s/he can handle that denomination). Here, then, over
1S-2NT, partner would DOUBLE in the hopes that I can
handle Clubs.

Kcchu played this hand very well. Memory got off to a
good trump lead. Kcchu took the Heart finesse and then,
before tackling clubs, led a DIAMOND from dummy...in case
the D-AK were both onside! They were, so he didn't have
to guess Clubs. Combine your chances!

Here we see Dave slightly misplay this deceptively easy
hand. By taking TWO Club finesses he will make 75% of the
time (i.e. any time I don't hold C-KJx). By leading a DIAMOND
from dummy he adds an additional 25% (i.e. to chances of
North holding D-AK, as he in fact does!) of the remaining 25%
to that. 75% + (25% / 4) = 81.25%, versus the straight 75%.

Kenny got off to a testing lead of the Diamond King. This
deprived me of a vital dummy entry for all the finessing I
had in mind. I SHOULD have led a trump from dummy and
taken my Heart finesse immediately. I was worried that
Kenny would win with the H-K (if he had held it), gone
to RBrough's hand with a Diamond and then I would see a
Club shift through my C-Kxx. Instead, I played three
rounds of Spades, pitching my Diamond loser, before
hooking in trumps. Suspecting that trumps were 3-1
(which Rbrough's Spade lead confirmed at trick 7 when
Ksired failed to over-ruff) I now had to play for a
singleton or doubleton C-A. +620. No problem! :)

An interesting theory point here. If you DON'T open 1NT with
a 5-card major (and many pairs agree not to) then the jump
rebid to 2NT shows the strong 1NT type (16-18). Partner
couldn't understand my 2NT rebid; he thought it showed
19-21 HCPs! We were lucky to land on our feet. :)
I erred slightly in my play. Taking the early Spade hook
was good MATCHPOINT play, but at IMPs I should win the
D-Ace and IMMEDIATELY lead a Heart to my King (LOW towards
BIG!) in order to draw trumps quickly. My line of play
would have cost me the game if West had played a Spade
and I had guessed to finesse a second time! :(

N-S were lucky not to get too high here. Memory chose to jump
to 3S with her poor Spade support. While this was a reasonable
choice, North's 4D cuebid might have been embarrassing. Is
North INSISTING on slam whenever South has a Club control (in
which case Memory MUST bid 5C over 4S) or is North just making
a general slam try? Memory guessed right, passing 4S. Good
thing Davidkc didn't have one of the Spade honours!

This hand illustrates why you should lead SMALL from Honour-third
in partner's suit. Kcchu should lead the H-Q only from H-Qx.
With NO entries to dummy, Maynard would have gone down AT LEAST
ONE in 3NT against a small Heart lead and small Heart return.

RBrough wanted to check Ksired's cigarettes after Kenny passed
this hand in 1st seat! It's always nice to chalk up a part
score while one's teammates are scoring a GAME at the other
table. :)
Genius wondered why I took the Diamond finesse into the teeth
of RBrough's diamond bid rather than playing a 3rd round of
trump. The reason, of course, is that this is my last time
in my hand if Spades break 4-2. And even LOSING the D-hook
guarantees me entries back to my hand (i.e. the D-10 & D-9).
Remember the general rule when playing a "Moysian" (i.e. 4-3)
fit: Draw two rounds of trump and attack your best suit
(Diamonds, here).

And here we see why you DO lead the Honour from Honour-DOUBLETON
in partner's suit. Kenny's S-Q felled dummy's S-Q in specatuclar
fashion. Notice also that I PASSED the 2H (Michaels) call with
my 13-count because I was ready to hammer off ANYTHING they ran
to. This has the added benefit of not alerting the opponents to
the danger facing them; RBrough almost RAISED 2S to 3S here!
2S doubled would have been a fun contract. I would lead the
H-King and switch to a trump, giving RBrough an immediate
guess. If he guesses right he would either make or go down
one. If you guesses WRONG he'd be lucky to go down THREE!
Playing in 3NT was a rather simple matter of stripping KSired
of all of his Spades and Diamonds in order to throw him in with
a Heart, endplaying him with nothing but Clubs. This is a common
motiff whenever the opponents have "tipped their hand" with
such a descriptive bid as 2NT. Once I figured out which minor
RBrough held, the whole hand became an "open book".

This hand was over at trick one. This was the only hand I let
Genius play and he was NOT about to blow it. Realizing that
dummy entries were in very short supply, Genius knew that he
had to draw trumps quickly and start to work on those Spades.
He hopped up with the Club Ace and immediately finessed in
Hearts. Once trumps were drawn, he conceded two tricks in
each pointed suit. Good IMP play!

This is the only hand I've ever seen Maynard misplay. I guess
he'd played a lot of matchpoints on the weekend. Finessing
the C-Q not only cost him a Club trick unnecessarily, it also
caused him to relay on a 3-3 Spade break in order to get
back to dummy for the Heart finesse! Spades broke 4-2 (as
the odds say they should). West's insistent Diamond plays
promoted East's H-10 to the setting trick.

A few words of explanation. First, Drew Cannell is Winnipeg's
top player, a famous internationalist who has played with the
Panamanian National Team and is currently coaching the
Swedish National Team. A truly AWESOME player, on par with
Soloway, Goldman, Hamman, Wolf and, yes, Belladonna.
After getting our opponents off to a 17 IMP lead (much to my
teammates chagrin, I might add), I switched sides "faster
than a Campbell". I'm glad I didn't falter too badly in
the second half; my teammates would've never forgiven me.
As it was, the other captain, "genius", punctuated each of my
more spectacular plays with the flattering question: "Who
ARE you?" I kept telling him that I usually played MUCH
WORSE than this, but he was convinced that I was "putting him
on". He knew I was from Winnipeg, but refused to believe that
anyone as bad as I could have such a good day. The FOURTH
time he asked "Who ARE you?" I "confessed" that I was
Drew Cannell ! :))

TWICE Hcli refused his partner's transfer to Spades. He either
didn't KNOW that 2H and 4H showed Spades or was embarrassed to
bid them with a singleton S-A. While I conceded that the West
hand is a difficult one to bid, one must never compound a
questionable bid (1NT) with bad ones (3NT and 4NT). Having
chosen to treat the West Hand as balanced Hcli has "made his
bed" and, over 2H or 4H, MUST lie in it! :)

Here Wintaka finds the correct and descriptive bid of 3S. And
look at the pressure Davidkc comes under! South guessed to
bid 4H (hoping Genius might be holding MY hand). I knew what
to do over THAT! Despite the garrish "sticks and wheels"
number, THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A FLAT BOARD!
Of course, if Davidkc had chosen to double 3S for takeout I
would have made one of my "I-can-double-anything" trap
passes. :)

RBrough's 3H bid was a limit raise in Spades. Myself, I prefer
a more traditional TWO Heart cuebid, since it allows us to stop
in 2S if partner has overcalled on the kinds of trash that *I*
overcall on! :)
Hcli misdefended here in returning the D-Q at trick 7, relying
on Kcchu to have D-AJ10. Having seen the opponents cross-ruff,
a low trump would have beaten 4S TWO.

Here it was MY turn to lose my mind. Obviously, I've been
playing matchpoints and Standard American (where my partner
could have as many as 18 HCPs here) too long. My balancing
2NT call, showing the minors, was a cerebral hemorrhage. It
was especially bad in light of the fact that OUR 1H opening
bid ranges from 8 to 15! Partner had a MAXIMUM and we STILL
went for -500! Not my finest hour. :(
Two points should be gleamed from this:
1. It's good to have teammates who can chalk up +620s to
hide our -500s!
2. Compulsive gamblers, I'm told, always spend their
winnings IMMEDIATELY, as if it were "found money".
Similarly, my silly 2NT bid came hot on the heels
of our +1100. "Can't stand prosperity?" partner asked.
He makes a very profound point. When you've just taken
the opponents for a telephone number let THEM do the
panicking! :)

Genius's light 1S opener backfired on him here. East was able
to double for takeout. Notice my 3H bid on 7 WORKING HCPs
(i.e. no wasted values in partner's presumed Spade shortness).
Holding 17 "of the finest" Wintaka brisquely bid 4H.
Notice the DEUCE of Hearts towards dummy at trick 3. This
caters to the possibility of North having a singleton H-Q or
H-K. LOW towards BIG! Are you tired of hearing that yet? :)

While I am loathe to argue with success, this hand should
have resulted in -800 versus our lucky +620 at the other
table. Raising partner's overcall over a negative double
shows a significantly WORSE hand than North's. RBrough
should REDOUBLE or PASS first, and THEN raise to 2S.
Seeing his partner "pre-empt" with a direct 2S raise,
Maynard pre-empted back with 3S! RBrough, trying to
catch up, took this as an invitation to a funeral
and happily accepted!
I can only conclude that, in passing out 4S, West thought
that his partner had psyched his 1C opening.

We (E-W) play a funny system, where 1H could be as weak as
a weak 2H. The 2C reply is Game Forcing Stayman. Wintaka did
well to pull my penalty double of 2S. :)
The trump lead and continuation didn't hurt my cause. I
went about my business setting up Clubs. Davidkc's Diamond
return, however, was very awkward for me, since it threatened
my entry to those Clubs (once they were established). This
explains why I DUCKED the King of Diamonds! Indeed, had North
CONTINUED Diamonds I would have been down quite a few! North's
TRUMP return allowed me to ruff a Club to my hand (establishing
that suit in the process), draw the last trump and USE THAT
CRITICAL D-ACE TO GET BACK TO THE DUMMY'S GOOD CLUBS !
I TOLD you this was an easy game. :)

careful bidding is NOT always rewarded. :)

THIS was a fascinating hand which has resulted in a change to
our system. Partner's 1NT showed Diamond support (or at least
"tolerance") and "scattered defensive values" in our system.
But do I dare "reverse" into 3H with such a poor Heart suit?
After a LONG hesitation, I decided to risk it. Suddenly,
partner perked up! His 4C cuebid was a brilliancy and would
have led to SIX Hearts had I held the Club KING instead of
the Queen. We did well to stop in 4H, making 5.
Bill and I have since decided to play NEGATIVE doubles any
time it goes minor-minor-major (i.e. 1C-1D-1H-Dble,
1C-1D-1S-Dble, 1D-2C-2H-Dble or 1D-2C-2S-Dble). The free
NT bid, then, will show the "scattered defensive values"
and support BUT DENY 4+cards in the unbid major. This
treatment is NOT standard, though. :(
So, you see, even after 20 years of playing this game one
learns and builds on one's arsenal of gadgets and tricks. :)

Of course, there is no defence against RBrough's propensity
for going for -800 at every given opportunity! :)
Still, 4S is not THAT bad a bid. Granted, RBrough has the
"death" holding (i.e. a doubleton) in both red suits and only
FOUR Spades. He cannot expect to make 4S, but hopes that
his fit for Opener's Club "suit" will hold him in good stead.
Obviously, NOT a triumph for 3-card minor suit openings!

This was one of the very few "system triumphs" for the
Canadian Club here. Wintaka's 1C is strong and forcing.
My 1S is a transfer to 1NT! This allows the STRONG hand
(and the strong player, in this case) to be Declarer.
2D was another transfer, this time to my 4-card HEART
suit. Lacking 4 Hearts himself, Wintaka refused this 2nd
transfer and leapt to 3NT. Wintaka now endeavoured to
KEEP Davidkc on lead. Notice that the defence cannot
manufacture FOUR Club tricks as long as South starts
them. And who wants to lead from C-KJx into the teeth
of a strong (16+ HCP) 1C opener?
Needing a ninth trick (assuming Diamonds were going to
break 4-2), Wintaka HID the Diamond length and finessed
in HEARTS. When this failed, he won the Heart return and
thought about Diamonds. Rather than rely TOTALLY on the
3-3 Diamond break, though, why not cash the Spade Ace--in
case someone pitches a fourth Diamond? You never know. :)
Sure enough, Davidkc tossed the "devastating diamond
deuce". "Thank you!" Wintaka thought, as he collected
5 Diamonds, 2 Spades, 2 Hearts and his contract. Nice
swindle, Billy!
Two points to make:
1. Treat opponents like "Revenuers". Hide your good
stuff!
2. Always keep the "safe" opponent on lead. This is
USUALLY the opponent to the LEFT of Declarer (as
here). Sometimes, "safe" is defined as being the
defender who didn't find the killing lead the
FIRST time. Why assume s/he will find it the
SECOND time? :)

Maynard did well to take the push to 3H to salvage -50
rather than 110 for them at BOTH tables. GRRRRRR!!! :(

Not that it matters one bit on THIS hand, I always prefer to
open these Black 2-suiters 1C rather than 1S when playing
SAYC. The opponents will NOT shut out my Spades and it is
a CLUB lead I want to encourage. If you don't bid Clubs at
the one level, you may NEVER get the chance later (as here).
Nevertheless, looking at S-Jx NORTH should compete to 3S here
when he hears his partner rebid Spades FREELY. 3S is cold
(despite South's subminimum hand) and 4S will make on a
squeeze if the Defence doesn't ever lead a Diamond (cutting
off Declarer's entry to dummy after playing all his Spades).
Can't see the squeeze? Play off ALL of South's cards
except the d-6 c-AK632. Dummy will have d-AKQ75 c-9. That
means every one must be down to 6 cards, right? Well,
which 6 cards should EAST keep? :)

A DEVASTATING pre-emptive 3H bid by Wintaka here! South
must now choose between 3S (rebidding that ratty 6-carder
while hiding his good 5-card Club suit), which makes, and
4C, which doesn't. Given his partner's negative double of
2H (why not 3D, since they play it as non-forcing?), South
bid 4C with alacrity--after contemplating FIVE Clubs! :)
