N-S's pre-empting made it tough for the opponents to find 4S
here. I might have ventured 3S with East's hand over 3D,
but this might get partner (West) VERY excited. :(
It's not often you see a "double game" swing. :)

2NT here was "Sandwich", showing a weak hand with 5-5 or
better in the unbid (i.e. Black) suits. This meant that
West had TWELVE working HCPs--even his Club Jack springs
to life! Good 5S bid, Wintaka!

3NT here is a reflexive bid one sees too often when partner
pulls our penalty double. West has to recognize that East
does NOT want to play in No Trump and has a weakish hand
with a likely shortness in Diamonds. West should either
pass 3C or steer towards 5C with either 4C or 3D (in case
East has D-K or even D-Qx. 5C happens to go down only
because the C-King is offside.
At the heart of the problem, though, is the fact that East
does NOT have an opening bid! Better to have PASSED with
the idea of bidding Spades later.

KSired played this hand very well. Watch how he plays the
Diamond suit: D-9 to the D-Ace before DUCKING a Diamond
to the doubleton King. This "intrafinesse" earned him
a second Diamond trick to go along with the 2 Spades, 3
Clubs and 2 Hearts for nine. Well done!

South played this hand quite well until the ending, where he
failed to cash his H-Ace at trick 11 to squeeze West down to
S-8 (to protect against Dummy's S-7) and denuded D-K. Then
he could pitch the now useless S-7 from dummy, keeping D-A8,
and claim the last two Diamond tricks.
Most beginners have a hard time understanding squeezes. They
are NOT as complicated as they sound. As South, just ask
yourself: what two cards will West (RHO) keep when I cash
my H-Ace? Pitch whatever West does NOT pitch. Just make
sure you keep an entry (i.e. the D-Ace here) to the other
hand's possible winners! :)

KSired's sterile 3-4-3-3 distribution argued against competing
to 5H here. His double does NOT show great Spade strength; it
only warns North against going to 5H. With a more unbalanced
hand herself, Memory COULD have over-ridden this warning and
gone on to 5H. Nice pass, Mem!

Here, North had to bid DIRECTLY over 4S, and couldn't get
South's opinion first (as at the other table). Given that
3S was pre-emptive, North SHOULD have made a forcing pass
here, SUGGESTING 5H. South would have doubled 4S and
pushed the board, given the opportunity to do so.
How do we know the pass of 4S is forcing, you ask? Now
THAT is a question that has perplexed experts for decades.
The basic rule is that if OUR side has shown the preponderance
of HCPs, the pass is forcing. Not much to go on, right? :(

The Theory of Reluctant Choice strikes again! Whenever dummy
makes a tepid choice between declarer's 2 or 3 suits LEAD
TRUMPS to cut down on the ruffs. Here, the trump lead prevents
any Club ruffs in the short (i.e. dummy's) Heart length.
In the ending, East went strangely awry. The general rule is
to keep the same number of cards in each suit as the enemy
hand. After cutting South off from dummy, East should keep
two Spades and two Diamonds--the same holding as dummy--to
beat 4H an extra trick.

Three rounds of Diamonds made it impossible for North to
simply draw trumps and claim after the Club finesse. By
"forcing" Declarer in this way and by concentrating on
their long suits, the defence managed to beat 3D.

Here we see a Lebensohl 2NT free bid opposite East's 1NT
opening. Lebensohl allows Responder to 1NT a way to
compete at the 3-level without exciting partner. In
its most basic form, the 2NT bidder forces 1NT Opener
to bid 3C. Then Responder will either pass (with Clubs),
bid 3D (with Diamonds) or, in this case, bid 3H. In
this case, 1NT-2S-3H *without the 2NT relay first* would
have been natural and FORCING.
Of course, North's 3S bid precluded E-W from completing
their Lebensohl description.
Wintaka defended this hand well. After we cashed our
Club and Heart winners he reasoned that we would have
no more NON-TRUMP winners. He then proceeded to "pump"
the enemy by giving them ruffs-and-sluffs! Remember:
giving the opponents a ruff-and-sluff is ONLY advisable
when they do NOT have any more non-trump losers.

With "100 honours" in the suit, I prefer a 2H overcall to
a pass of the forcing 1NT with East's hand. When 2S was
passed around to him, he now had to make a balancing double,
but the Heart fit was lost. Had he bid 2H and 2S were
passed around to him he could still have balanced with a
double, but West would know to bid 3H unless he held a
5-card minor suit.
Bottom line: Bid early--especially with a strong suit.

Unless you and your partner have agreed differently, a free
bid in a new suit opposite an overcall is "forward going but
not forcing". Thus, 2H could be passed. Thus, West passed.
As it turns out, West could have afforded to bid 3H. :)
Wintaka's careful line of play makes 4H
against any lead. Figuring that he'll need to ruff a
Diamond on dummy, he leads low toward the D-K at trick 2.
When the D-Ace popped onside (as expected) he could ruff
the 2nd round of Spades, draw 2 trumps and play off his
winners. South could take his H-Q and 2 Aces, but no more.
Note that if Wintaka had pulled 2 trumps BEFORE driving
out the D-Ace South could hold him to 9 tricks by
cashing the H-Q, drawing dummy's last trump.

South drew the inference from my H-5 lead that I must
have a Heart honour, that it must be the H-King and
that he must therefore duck the Heart return. All
quite well reasoned, but *I* would have lead the H-5
from the H-1075 if I'd held it. :(

Here, South reasoned that East held H-KQ83 and had led
back a Heart in the hopes that West had the H-Jack.
Again, well reasoned. But poorly guessed! :(

16 HCPs is the MOST a 1D Opener can have in our system, so
Wintaka's 3C was correct. West ducked the S-Q, in case
South had SEVEN Spades without the H-Ace. This might have
been a "careless precaution" had North held the S-Ace!
When two Club finesses won West cashed the two minor suit
Aces and returned to hand with the carefully preserved C-10.
When South shed a Spade on this West knew the Diamond hook
was NOT going to win. He played the H-King, hoping that
South had started with only 5 Spades and could now cash
only 3 Spades. Too bad. :(
West's error was in cashing the Diamond Ace. Had he
NOT cashed it and returned to his hand via the C-10 he
could afford to re-enter dummy with that D-Ace and
play the 5th Club (forcing South to shed ANOTHER Spade)
before tossing South in with a small Heart from Dummy.
After cashing his Spades, South would be endplayed into
leading a Diamond from D-Q3 into the teeth of Dummy's D-KJ.
How does West KNOW that South has that Diamond Queen?
Because South is pitched BOSS Spades instead of Diamonds.
With 2 or 3 useless Diamonds South might have pitched
one of them instead of a good Spade.

1C was strong and forcing here. 2NT was a takeout bid. 4H,
the final contract, turned out to be unbeatable. All of the
earmarks for a good "Moysian" (i.e. 4-3) fit are in place
here: E-W will be ruffing in the SHORT 3-card length (Dummy)
and Dummy provides a good long suit (Clubs) as a source of
non-trump tricks. A Spade return instead of the C-3 would
not have helped N-S; Declarer would simply ruff it in
dummy and retain his S-K as a later Spade guard. :(
Nice bidding, Dragonlets!
