While Bill "Wintaka" Treble and I were away playing in the
Red Deer Calcutta (which Bill won) and the subsequent Calgary
Regional (in which Bill won the Knockouts and finished second
to Passells in the IMP Pairs), the Space Cadets faced off against
the Dragonlets. Buttressed by our absence, the team succeeded in
holding on to a 1st half lead and move up the Riko Ladder to
second place!
The comments that you see between the hands are intended for
Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as
you enjoy these records of the decisive hands in this match.

This was a great example of "fielding" by Kenny, who
PASSED 5H despite his four "Neapolitan Controls" (where
an Ace is TWO controls and a King counts as ONE) and
H-1042 support. East understood that North may well
have a minor suit singleton to lead and that a ruff
may beat 6H. A good rule of thumb is to not worry
too much about missing a SLAM over a 4-level pre-empt;
just don't miss your GAMES.
All of that said, *I* would have have not resisted
the temptation to cuebid 5S en route to 6D or 6H here.

Given that East is a passed hand and that West has opened
a weak 2H, South MIGHT have guessed to balance with a
double here. After all, SOMEONE at the table must have
some HCPs. :)
Were East NOT a passed hand, however, I would agree with
South's pass without reservation.

East found it very difficult to stop short of slam with
this strong "Roman 2D" (i.e. 4-4-4-1 type) hand. Sadly,
West's unnatural bidding (2NT instead of 2S) made it
hard to find the chancy 3NT or the cold 5D. Notice that
5D can make by ATTACKING your length (Spades).

KSired found an interesting solution to the 1-4-4-4 dilemma.
He treated it as a flat hand and then REFUSED to accept a
transfer into his singleton! Maynard has "played the game
before" and knew enough to leave 3NT alone.
In the play, Kenny's Diamond finesse was correct but
unfortunate. CYIFAN found the excellent Heart shift at
trick 3. Kenny made a slight technical error winning this
trick with the Ace. Usually, a declarer will play the
Ace here to CONCEAL the Heart strength. Here, Kenny
should play the Heart KING to REVEAL the Heart strength
to the opponents so as to discourage further Heart plays.
Kenny could have made 3NT by playing on this length at
trick 2. A Spade towards the King would keep him one
critical tempo ahead of the enemy. While this was the
WINNING play, it was not necessarily the CORRECT play.

West's 9 HCPs and TWO 5-card minor suits may give the novice
the impression that West is MAXIMAL for the 1NT free bid here.
Not true. One must always proceed VERY CAUTIOUSLY when
partner overcalls in our short suit. With ANYTHING LESS
West should pass 1S here. Switch East's pointed suit
honours around to: s-AKJxx h- J10x d-Kxx c-xx and 1NT
would be a struggle.

When you have reason to believe that your partner MAY
be ruffing a trick you should make a "suit preference"
return. The C-2 at trick two, then, asked for a LOWER
ranked non-trump return. Hence the Diamond plays at
trick 3 and 4 to set 4S here. Well done!

CYIFAN's 5D was an error here, rebidding the South hand's
values twice. Better would have been a "Sandwich" (ie. Unusual)
2NT free bid over 2S, showing a weak but distributional red
2-suiter. Only then could South, over 4S, be content to have
described hir hand and PASS 4S, pushing the board with a
Club lead.
Note the effect of the Heart continuation at trick 7, short
ruffing North. Now the Club suit is "dead". Great defence!

South's 3H was "Unusual over Unusual", showing a WEAK raise
of Hearts. With a stronger (invitational rather than merely
competitive) raise South would bid an artificial 3C here.
(With SPADES instead of Heart support South would bid
3D with a good hand, 3S over 2NT being NON-forcing.)
North's 19 HCP hand will always bid game over ANY Heart
raise, though.
Upon seeing the 4-0 Heart break, North needs to double-finesse
Hearts. Once West plays the H-10 at trick 5 the hand should
be over: Declarer plays a Spade towards the Queen and loses
a Diamond, a Spade and a trump. Playing the C-K was a rare
mistake by North, since it gave the opponents a criticial
tempo to short-ruff Declarer later in Clubs.
Remember: STICK to your plan and let the OPPONENT's play
their suit(s) while we play on OURS.

preclude a Diamond loser later in the play.

Kenny's vigorous pre-emptive 4D bid convinced Maynard that
5D would either MAKE or be a good sacrifice against a
Spade partial. He checked for Aces, Kenny lied, denying
an Ace to slow his partner down, and the pair stopped in 5D.
Note the irony here: one pair didn't reach game while the
other tried for SLAM! :)

There are two points to be made about KSired's "disastrous"
2S bid here. First, standard bidding practice dictates that
a raise to 2S by Maynard could only be made with Spade
support AND a maximum. Maynard has neither. Kenny, hoping
that Maynard would at least have Spade support, rebid 2S
rather than 3C. Sophisticated partnerships have ways
around this, including using a "competitive" double of 2H to
show a good hand--often with Spade support--while a direct
raise simply shows a minimum with 3+card support.
The second point is more important, though. With 6 HCPs
KSired should be HAPPY to pass out 2H here. 4H is cold! :)

Hearing North bid 3H FREELY here, South's full opening
bid, critical S-9 and H-Ax is well worth bidding on to
game here. After drawing trump and finding the D-K
perched over Dummy's D-Queen, Declarer can take a
double-finesse against East's promised Spade length to
make 4H.

East made 4S here on a pseudo squeeze, as N-S pitched too
many Clubs, setting up West's C-7 on dummy. The general
rule here is: keep as many cards as the enemy has in
each suit. South should pitch DIAMONDS here, leaving
partner to guard that suit while South guards Clubs.

West was, admittedly, "cross-fired" on this hand in that
he would have preferred to see if North was going to bid
on opposite the "all but forcing" 3H rebid. He should
observe the Steinitz Dictum and not interrupt the opponents
while they're making a mistake. With 8 HCP North may well
have rebid 3NT (an error, with such poor Heart support)
and THAT would have been BLOODY !

A similar hand came up with Wintaka and I recently and we,
too, went overboard over the jump to 3NT. We have since
decided to play a Lebensohl treatment here. In response
to a takeout double of 2-of-a-major a jump to 3NT DENIES
slam interest while 2NT (Lebensohl, forcing 3C from the
doubler) followed by 3NT SHOWS slam interest. "Slow shows"
is a recurrent theme with Lebensohlers.
This would warn North here to NOT try for slam over
South's jump to 3NT.

"Return your partner's suit" is a good rule of thumb,
but here we see South make a brilliant switch at trick 2
to beat 3NT. A diamond continuation would have given
Declarer his 9th trick! South applied an equally
valid truism: always lead RHO's weakness (i.e Hearts
at trick 2). North might have been well advised to apply
a third general rule: "Always lead a major against 3NT!".
