Space Cadets versus DownEastuhs
back to
Home Planet
This was easily our worst performance as a team. Indeed, we were so bad that we awarded the coveted MVP honour to RBrough, the one Space Cadet who avoided playing the worst session of his life--by not showing up!
Nevertheless, it was, conceivably, the most instructive set we have played. Plenty of errors to learn from here!
The comments that you see between the hands are intended for Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as you enjoy these records of the decisive hands in this match.

Doubletons are "death holdings" on offence. At least with a
3-card holding there is SOME chance that partner is short in
the suit. With TWO major suit doubletons, of course, this
West hand is too flat for his 4NT "pick-a-minor" sacrificial
bid. Notice that East applies the "LOTUS" ("Lower Of Two
Usually Stronger") principle in selecting Clubs over Diamonds.
Note also that had the D-King been ONSIDE E-W would get out
for -500 but 4H would fail! Hence, 4NT is never a winner here.

Not wanting to encourage a Spade lead or return here, East
correctly bids 3C, not 2S, over 2H. The pass of 3H is quite
reasonable--but unsuccessful--here, since it SOUNDED like
Hearts would break AT BEST 3-1 with all that E-W bidding!

	I prefer a double to a 1S overcall with North's hand. "Better
to bid THREE suits than one." This would have prompted Memory
to bid 3H--which may actually make--over any 3D bid. But 1S
is reasonable and would be the choice of MANY experts here.

South's first double was, I believe, negative, showing the
unbid (round) suits. WCW dutifully bid 2H. South's SECOND
double was "competitive", I would think, inviting 4H. North
should DECLINE this invite by--yes--rebidding his 3-card
Heart suit! This was the first of MANY hands the Space Cadets
could ("should" would be too strong a word here) have DOUBLED
in this match. These DownEastuhs like to bid !

When you play a "Sandwich 1NT" after the opponents have
bid two suits, you show a WEAK and distributional hand.
Thus, when you DOUBLE for takeout INSTEAD of making a
Sandwich 1NT overcall you are showing 4-4 or 5-4 in
the unbids and a GOOD DEFENSIVE hand. This latter
stipulation makes the sacrifice a questionable choice
here. South's hand has the PERFECT hand for a singleton
Club lead (i.e. trump control and a partner that may have
an entry). The likely second Diamond trick may well set
4S here. North's action, then, comes into question. He
would have done better to bid 3H or even 4H directly
over the takeout double. Having said his piece, North
could then leave any sacrificial bids up to his partner.

North missed the chance to give partner a Club ruff here, but
4S would make anyway on a Diamond finesse. The defence's only
chance is for South to lead a SMALL Diamond at trick 4 and hope
that Declarer rises with the D-K or D-Q (VERY likely, given
that he lacks the D-J and D-10!). Then the Club ruff would
leave	East with an inescapable Diamond loser for down 1!
Remember: always give Declarer a chance to go wrong! :)

When partner embarrasses you with a takeout double and you have
only 3-card suits BID THE CHEAPEST ONE and BID IT QUICKLY and
CONFIDENTLY. West might even MAKE 1S, if he uses his entries
to lead Spades to dummy every time. North will ONLY beat 1S
if he holds up the Club Ace until East tries to overtake a
	Club for a second entry.

The DownEastuhs were very unlucky here. 3NT is a great
contract, making whenever the C-10 falls in three rounds.
Not here, though. Note, too, that West would have been
foolish to try 3NT if he'd held a VOID in Clubs!

3NT is very difficult for West to bid here with only a
singleton C-J in support of partner's long suit. West was
unlucky to catch East with C-AKQ9752, but very fortunate
to see South hold C-10864! Remember: sometimes big swings

West PLAYED this hand much better than he BID it. East's cuebid
followed by a free 3S bid was intended as forcing.
In 4H West has very few entries to his hand, so he takes a
"Finnish finesse" in Spades, leading a small Spade from dummy
to his S-10. And it worked! Of course, C-AK and a heart ruff
followed by a Heart finesse would SEEM to work, but the enemy
would cash a bunch of Hearts when in with the S-Ace if declarer
were to draw three rounds of trumps after both E-W hands
ruffed once. Nicely PLAYED, Kenny! :)

Should South have risen with the Spade Queen? Only if he has
EVERY reason to believe that his partner has the S-Ace. Here
South has every reason to believe that his partner DOESN'T ! :)

Bidding 1NT over an enemy opening bid is risky when you *do*
have 15-18 HCPs. STRETCHING with 14 HCPs in order to make a
1NT "head-on-the-chopping-block" overcall is nearly suicidal.
Better to DOUBLE or PASS such a hand, for maximum flexibility.

The problem with 15-18 HCP 1NT overcalls is that they will
lead to game ONLY when partner has 10+ of the remaining 12-14
outstanding HCPs. If OPENER's partner ("Responder") has
them or if Opener has a lot of extras, you just spat up -800
or -1100. The deciding factor against the 1NT overcall is
how easy if makes life for Opener's partner. Responder
can double, as above, or bid 2-of-any-suit on the weakest
of hands (non-forcing, since Responder would DOUBLE with
any HCPs). Remember, Responder has heard hir partner open
	a suit. Advancer (i.e. 1NT overcaller's partner) has NOT.
So if you ARE going to make natural 15-18 HCP overcalls,
HAVE A SOURCE OF TRICKS: a 5-card minor and/or some TENS.

Study the Diamond suit carefully here. On the D-4 switch at
trick 2 West has NO chance of a second Diamond trick
naturally unless East has led from the D-Queen (unlikely,
given the chances in Spades and those intimidating Diamond
spots on the dummy). Inserting the D-Jack can't help since
Declarer either HAS the D-10 or can finesse it. West should
probably rise with the D-Ace and score a Diamond ruff or two
	to push the board.

Here West correctly rises with the D-Ace and gives his partner
a ruff. On the Club return I MUST finesse to have a chance to
recover my contract (if the H-Queen falls). Good defence!

I could have tried to confuse West a little by playing the
D-NINE at trick one. This would, essentially, DENY D-Q1072,
	since with that holding I would play LOW, wouldn't I ? :)

One of the reasons I overcall 2C on poorish hands like the
East hand is because I never want THIS to happen to me! :)
Yes, I would bid 2C WITHOUT the S-QJ here and, yes, I WILL
go for the odd -800, but at least PARTNER will know what
suit I want led! Here, West has been given no reason to
lead a Club and therefore chooses a Spade. South played
well, grasping his only real chance: ruffing finesses
	against West's H-AK. Nicely played!

South could have stopped in 3NT here, but wanted to see if
I could go on to 6D. My 4C was a "nothing" bid; I just
didn't want to bid ONLY 4D with SIX of them and I wanted
to discourage a Club lead. Partner stopped wisely (but
	unfortunately) in 5D.

Clubs are an awkward suit to bid in any system. How can East
bid her Clubs AND show a Diamond guard? Frankly, she can't.
Still, 5C is unlucky to go down. Had South led a passive

Another lead discovery hand. East's 3NT bid in the teeth of

Notice Wintaka's 1D opening bid with 4-5 in the minors. This
is correct EVEN IN STANDARD, since it gives him a comfortable
rebid in Clubs. Our 1D openings almost ALWAYS show 4+ Ds

Memory's 2D show of strength precluded any 3C bid from the
South hand. She then made a very disciplined pass of 2S,
which shows a minimum overcall (not 6+ spades). Well
	done, Memory!

PASSing the 2D transfer is questionable with the North hand.
At the other table, North considered 2H (showing the other
three suits) and 2S (to direct the lead). PASS never
entered his mind! The problem with the pass became evident
soon enough: partner will NEVER double ANYTHING without
knowing that you have a card or two.

So, uh, why wasn't 4H doubled here?
Many newcomers to the game assume that they should NOT
double freely bid games. This is not true at all.
When south hears ANYTHING from partner he should resolve
to double ANY game! +1100 would have netted us 12 IMPs.

South's 2H "correction" is wrong. If the defence errs I
might be able to ruff a Heart in 2D. Ruffing a Diamond in
2H does not help my cause, though. The worst of it is that
the 2H bid gives East ANOTHER chance to bid...or double! :(

Consistent with his correction from Diamonds to Hearts on the
previous hand, partner insisted on bidding until the enemy
doubled. He knew that I would not bid 4D without SOME
Hearts, but he also knew from my failure to redouble 3H that
our combined Heart holding would be very weak. He should
PASS 4D here--at least as long as it isn't doubled!
So when is it right to PASS and when is it right to CORRECT
with equally good or equally bad support for both suits?
This comes with practice, but the basic answer is: PASS
when you have good reason to think that you are in trouble,
correct from a minor to a major when you do NOT sense
	impending disaster.

East wondered why I didn't redouble with my 12 HCPs here.
I hate point-showing redoubles unless they are either
preparatory to raising partner's suit OR are a request
that partner doubles anything he or she has a good
trump holding in. Here, I prefer a trap pass at this
vulnerability. By feigning weakness, I convinced East
that his partner, FastPhil, must have had a better
takeout double. After all, OUR 1D openings are limited
to 15 HCPs, Opener isn't taking any free bids and I
	(North) am showing very little.
The question East SHOULD have asked--and the question
	that I am asking myself--is why didn't I DOUBLE 3H?
	Well,	I hate explaining -730's, that's why. :(

I just don't like opening the North hand. It has no tricks!
The only length is Clubs and those Clubs aren't going anywhere.
Indeed, I PASSED the North hand and, had the opponents passed,
would have only INVITED game with a 2NT reply to 1D.

Some wierd Canadian Club bidding here. North's 2C showed
11-15 HCPs and either 5+Clubs with a 4-card major OR
6+Clubs. 2H was a "trial transfer", showing four or more
SPADES in an INVITATIONAL hand. I didn't need to hear
	any more! "FOUR SPADES!"

Maynard got away with one here! 5H is a good sacrifice,
except for the vulnerability and the black doubletons in
the East hand. But Maynard made the best of it on a
Spade lead, sneaking an entry to the dummy with the
Diamond Queen to pitch a Club loser on the S-Ace. Well
done, Maynard. Of course, had North caught on to this
plan and rose with the D-Ace and given South two Diamond
ruffs it might have been "sticks and wheels" (i.e. 1100)
again! But, of course, how is North to know that Declarer
	has FIVE Diamonds?
This idea of taking advantage of a hidden asset in our
hands is a recurrent theme in bridge.
