This match was a heartbreaker for the Space Cadets. The Desert Storm
team was well above ours on the Riko Ladder, so winning this match
would have improved our team standing immensely. But despite a
scintillating guest appearance by Pat ("elzorrof") Fox on our team, we were
not able to pull this one out of the fire, losing by
two.
The comments that you see between the hands are intended for
Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as you enjoy these
records of the decisive hands in this match.

2H was a crazy conventional opening showing, I believe,
4-4 in the majors and less than opening points. Kenny
should have applied the Theory of Reluctant Choice here
(i.e. when one opponent has made a reluctant choice of
hir partner's two suits, LEAD TRUMPS). This is especially
true when you have length/strength in the second suit
(Hearts, here), as Ksired does. Declarer SHOULD have
played on HEARTS immediately, but played...SPADES !

A great illustration of why one should lead LOW from KQxx--especially
against a No Trump contract. Even when it's "wrong" (i.e. Dummy has
the Jack of Hearts here), it may work out okay if Declarer guesses
to play low and pard contributes the TEN. The same is true of
QJxx and J10xx, BTW...unless partner has bid the suit, of course.

Pat ("elzorrof") made a SLIGHT error here. From North's
point of view, beating 4C will require three major suit
tricks. She has one (H-Ace). Her ONLY chance, then,
is to switch to a SPADE at trick 2, hoping pard has
the Spade King and a Heart trick or S-KJ doubleton.
As it is, it will only prevent an overtrick, but an
IMP is an IMP. :)

Ksired insists on bidding No Trump every time someone deals
him a singleton, it seems. His proper rebid over 1S is
2C, of course. 2C by Wintaka was a "new minor forcing"
rebid and, of course, a SECOND mistake. Wintaka is worth
a 2H rebid and nothing more. Ksired compounds his error
of not bidding 2C earlier by raising Wintaka's 2C to 3C.
Wintaka tried to stop in 3S but Ksired was, apparently,
worried that 3S might make and was determined to keep
bidding until he had forced it to something that could
NOT make. Why Wintaka would disturb 3NT with such a
horrendous Spade suit is also a mystery.
The lesson here is to PASS when you suspect trouble
and to LISTEN to partner. Had EITHER player done so
here the would have stopped safely in 3S or 3NT...both
of which might make (since 3NT rates to get a Heart
lead).

Same horrendous new minor forcing rebid by Responder. 2H was
obvious here, with 2S being my second choice. Technically,
West should rebid 3D here, in case East really DOES have a
new minor forcing rebid with Diamond length.
Memory's failure to double 4S illustrates another important
point. It is commonly held opinion that "one can't lose if
one DOESN'T double". This, clearly, is wrong. Failure to
double here cost Memory's team a huge swing. :(

South's 2S rebid here promises 4+ and usually 5+ Clubs. The
general rule is that raising the level of bidding one level
here requires one extra trump. Knowing that the partnership
has 7 Spades and AT LEAST eight Clubs, elzorrof should correct
to 3C here. 3C, then, is at WORST a break-even proposition,
and, in this case, is ONE TRUMP better than that.

East's 3D bid, true to the theory of Total Number of Tricks,
is made on the presumption that E-W have NINE Diamonds, which
they do. South is now faced with a difficult choice and goes
wrong with a double, leading to 3H, down three. Notice how
difficult it is to find minor suit fits in SAYC ?

Wintaka's 3D rebid was, of course, of Martian extract. 2D
would have been an overbid! Hearing the opponent's bid 3NT
in the teeth of his 5-card Spade suit, North would do well
to find a "surprise" lead here. H-10, anyone?
This idea of a "surprise" lead is a very common one. I
often bid a suit as a "discovery" bid. If the opponents
start leaping off in No Trump, I know not to lead it! It
follows, of course, that I can only discover this by
bidding such ratty suits as North's Spades here. :)

Aggressive bidding by Ksired and Wintaka lead to a very lucky
game. In light of the poor Spade support, 2NT was far more
sensible with Kenny's hand, allowing the pair to stop there.

This hand illustrates a weakness in 2/1 as opposed to SAYC
bidding. Memory cannot bid her Diamonds! Since North never
HEARS about the 6-card Diamond fit she has NO CHANCE of
finding the one game that makes: 3NT !
Without a fourth trump (a critical consideration when raising
on a side shortness) Memory should DOWNGRADE her hand to a
limit raise.
In fact, this auction GUARANTEES a Club fit with elzorrof!
How else can anyone explain Responder's sudden ability to
force game? No, if Memory is going to force game here
(the 2C rebid by elzorrof certainly didn't IMPROVE Memory's
hand!) Memory should respond 2D, not 1NT. Declarer's jaw
must've dropped when she saw a VOID in Clubs hit dummy! :)

My 3H bid showed values, since we play Lebensohl over doubles
of opponents' weak 2-bids (i.e. with a WEAK hand and Heart
length I'd bid 2NT, forcing 3C from partner, and THEN bid 3H).

My 3H bid showed values, since we play Lebensohl over doubles
of opponents' weak 2-bids (i.e. with a WEAK hand and Heart
