Cuebidding
______
In our lesson test on Blackwood and RKC we stated that
Blackwood is the most overused convention in the world (with
Stayman a close second). But what is the alternative to
Blackwood? And, if we don't use it, might we not bid a
slam off 2 Aces? Or a grand, missing an Ace?
______
The answer to the first question is, for the most part: cuebidding. As for the
subsequent questions, the answer is: no, we will not bid slams that fail due to insufficient
Aces/Key Cards if we learn how to cuebid properly.
______
We commence by defining the term "cuebid". This word has many different uses,
including a bid of an opponent's suit:
| Opener |
Overcaller |
Responder |
Advancer |
1 |
2 |
--- |
--- |
______
Such cuebids may, depending up the situation, be natural (as after the opponents
have bid two suits naturally) or conventional. In the above example 2
is Michaels, showing the majors, in SAYC.
______
This lesson test focuses on the slam-going cuebids of a control (Ace, void or perhaps King or singleton) in
the bid suit. These occur at a level which forces to game in that suit. Hence, cuebids begin at the 4
level unless trump is Hearts, in which case they can begin with 3 .
| Opener |
Responder |

______
4 in the above auction shows a control in Clubs and interest
in a Spade slam.
______
There are two styles of cuebidding. One is part of SAYC and is commonly
taught to and played by novice-intermediates in North America. The other is
played by everyone else--including many of the experts teaching those
North American newcomers. We will refer to the former as the "North American"
style while the other will be described euphemistically as the "European"
approach to cuebidding.
______
True or false: the "North American" style is
characterized by cuebidding only first round controls (i.e. Aces or, perhaps, voids) on the first round
of cuebidding.
