West's pass over the takeout double worked out poorly here.
I would advise either 3S or a Fit Inspired Bid ("FIB") of 4C,
in case North ends up playing in Hearts. Note that ONLY a
Club lead form East will beat 4H here.

JaneH found a nice sacrifice of 5S over 5C here. Nevertheless,
West should NOT bid 5S here! West has already shown the weakish
hand with 4 Spades; it is up to EAST to decide whether sacrifice
is correct. 5S would have been a "phantom" sacrifice if East had
held the an Ace in the pointed suits instead of those Kings.
Bidding 5S here was tantamount to "telling the same joke twice".

2D here was "Mini-Roman", showing a 3-suited hand in
the 13-15 point range. While the Strong Roman 2D on 16-24
points makes sense, since Responder may pass 1C or 1D with
a hand that may make game, the Mini-Roman convention seems
less necessary. On THIS hand a natural 1D opening bid
would allow West to compete with those fine Diamonds. But
opposite a hand which might be SHORT in Diamonds, West is
"frozen out" of the auction.

As a passed hand, KSired had no qualms about bidding 2D here.
The worst that could happen is that East would have shortness in
Diamonds and remove to a 5+card Heart suit. 2D allowed East to
compete all the way up to the 4D level.

Over 2NT, West had not yet shown the Spade suit. West should
rebid 4S (16 points and 2 10s). However, many pairs play Four Suit
Transfers, where 1NT:2NT shows DIAMONDS. These pairs do NOT promise
a 4-card major with their 2C Stayman response; 2C followed by 2NT
is how they show a flat hand of 10-11 points, inviting 3NT. In my
opinion, this is a vastly inferior treatment to the SAYC 2S reply.

A simple Stayman auction allows E-W to find the superior
4S contract here. Declarer simply ruffed his red losers with
dummy's small trumps and then drew trumps.

This is an "impossible" auction. Over a takeout double, one
can redouble with 10 points and raise partner's major later. Since
South is too strong for a direct raise of Spades (which would show
6-8 points), the alternative to redoubling is to PASS and raise
Spades--without jumping--LATER to show 9 points.
JaneF played this hand well, ruff her Heart losers with
dummy's shorter trump length. The Spade King at trick 11 would
have been slightly better technique, though.

This is a good hand for "Maxi-Flex". If South *is* going to
bid again over 2S, I prefer a double to 3D. This allows North to
PASS with 5 Spades (and North isn't far from it!) or bid 3H with
4 Hearts. Of course, if North bids 3C South can "correct" to 3D.
Remember: when faced with 2 equally attractive choices (i.e. Dble
versus 3D here) choose the CHEAPER action (Dble here) so as to
give partner maximum flexibility.
Note that finding the 4-4 Heart fit is very difficult,
given the fact that North has insufficient strength for a
negative double over 1D-1S. Nevertheless, if N-S *can* find
their Heart fit after a takeout double of 2S by South, it will
play much more easily than 3D by South. North will be able
to enter her hand with Diamond ruffs to take the Heart finesses.
Remember: wherever possible, play in the weaker hand's suit,
so that trumps can provide entries.

Passing 2S here was a very reasonable action, given East's
intimidating 1NT call. At Matchpoints, fighting for part scores
is integral, but at IMPs avoiding possible -800's in part score
battles is much more important.

Leading the unbid suit (Diamonds) is a common theme in bridge.
Nevertheless, South would do better to lead TRUMPS...just in case
partner had the D-KQ instead of the D-Ace. This is consistent with
the Theory of Reluctant Choice, which states that whenever dummy
takes a tepid choice between Declarer's 2 (or more) suits, we
should LEAD trumps to avoid ruffs in Dummy. Note that ONE Spade
ruff in dummy would have been enough for 4H to make!

Without enough HCPs for Stayman here (since after 1NT:2C:2D

An interesting auction! 6H happens to make, and were
never bid! Indeed, only SOUTH, with H-KJ6, implied any Heart
length at all!
1C is correct here, intending to bid and rebid Hearts
to show a 5-6 hand. The cuebid of 4D was aggressive; 4H
was a less ambitious alternative. Over 4S, though, I think
that 5H might have sufficed. After all, South's Hearts
and Spades could have been reversed, giving slam no play.
Nevertheless, fortune favoured the bold 6C bid here. :)

The 1H opening bid *could* have worked out well here, but
only if North rebids 4D, not 4C. South would stop in 4H and
then North could bid 4NT (Key Card Blackwood) or 5H (to ask
for two top Heart Honours). In either case, the pair would
likely stop in 5H. With slam requiring a 3-2 Heart split
AND the H-Queen onside, this is NOT one that we should bid.
At 34%, it is 16% less likely than the 50% required for any
small slam.

North's 4S bid made it very difficult for East-West to stop
below slam. 5H *is* the best place to play the hand, but how can
E-W stop there? In fact, 6H is NOT a bad contract, requiring
little more than a Club finesse if played by West. Unlucky !

With a singleton, 4 Hearts to the Queen and those fine Clubs,
East should not pass 4S around to West. Instead, I recommend 5C.

Memory correctly passed the 1C opening bid until South's
takeout double was converted for penalties by North. Scrambling
to 1H *now* was proper, since it is unlikely that either opponent
has FIVE Hearts and almost certain that North has 5+ CLUBS. This
may seem to fly in the face of the "never rescue partner from
hir own suit" rule, but 1C does NOT promise 5+ Clubs the way
an overcall or an opening bid of 1H or 1S would.

East's psychic 1H response struck gold here. Not only did
West have four Hearts, but West was not so strong that she could
jump raise to 3H or 4H for a minus score for E-W. Despite his
12 HCPs and good pointed suits, South correctly stayed out of
the auction until 2H was passed around to him. His balancing
double found the Diamond fit, but not the game. :(

E-W had smooth sailing to 2H here. As an alternative, JaneF
might have passed 1NT or bid 2C over 1NT. Unless you are playing
New Minor Forcing, 2C is natural and NON-forcing over a 1NT rebid.
With 12 HCPs and a singleton, though, East should open 1D.

Our East had no qualms about opening 1D with 14 points here.
Note how a 1H "up-the-line" response allows East to rebid 1S so
that the pair will not lose a 4-4 fit in EITHER major.

Here is a bad hand for us proponents of active bidding. I
would overcall 2D (natural). This might have the unfortunate
effect of scaring the opponents out of 3NT. Here, though, with
a doubleton Diamond and H-KQ5, East MUST pull the 3NT bid to
4H...making. 2D *would* succeed in preventing a transfer
response, though. West would likely bid 2H and the auction
would end there.
3NT is a slight overbid here, BTW. I prefer 2NT with
only 8 HCPs + 1 Long Suit Point for the 5th Heart. But East
will bid 4H over 2NT or 3NT anyway.

This is the recommended auction. East should make this one
by taking her C-King at trick 3, playing FIVE Hearts and 4 Spades.
1 + 5 + 4 = 10 tricks.
