East was playing an overcall structure over 1NT where
3C would show a two-suited hand in the minors. The problem
is that WEST wasn't "on the same page", and thought 3C was
NATURAL and 1-suited.
With D-KQJ53 and only C-A843 over their 1NT opening,
I would prefer a 2D overcall--IF THAT WERE NATURAL--rather
than any 3-level response to show an additional 4-card suit.
Remember: safety FIRST at IMPs! :)

2C was CAPP here, showing any 1-suited hand. 2D asked
East WHICH suit East hand, and the pass showed DIAMONDS. Note
that HERE East treated hir hand as a ONE suiter, and chalked up
a well deserved plus score for hir efforts.

West made a nice 4S bid here, but MIGHT have contented
hirself with 3S in light of the great defence against a possible
4H contract. Still, the Law of Total Tricks dictates a 4S bid
by West. ANOTHER bad hand for the Law! :(

West made a very fortunate double here for hir side. Had
EAST had the S-AK and a Heart void -- as the bidding suggests may
be the case -- both games might make. As West, then, I might pass,
for fear of exposing my Heart position if North does, indeed, have
H-AQ742.

This hand illustrates the flip side of Ward Rule #13 ("No good
bid ever went unpunished!"). Here, 5C flutters home on the basis of
a 3-3 Club break AND a 3-3 Diamond break! And, just in case South
were to attack Hearts, the H-Q107 is onside, with THAT suit breaking
3-3 as well. This hand illustrates one of the biggest advantages of
playing bridge on the Internet: you can curse your bad luck as
loudly as you wish, and no one will be offended! :)

Here, South competed over 2H with 3D. North should now
bid 3NT, of course, and take his chances with H-AKJ providing
a possible ninth trick. 3H was a misbid, in that it ASKED for
something which ONLY the Asker (North) could possibly have: a
reason for N-S to bid 3NT!

This auction is one of Kaltica's "12 Apostle" auctions: 12
auctions where it sounds like BOTH opponents have stretched somewhat
in order to bid the final contract. Should such an auction occur
EARLY in a match, it is often a good idea to DOUBLE. Even if the
contract happens to make, you will have served notice that the
opponents had better not overbid against YOU! :)
This is consistent with the "Gamble Gambit" (named
after the irrascible ex-Winnipegger Bill Gamble), where we
"lose our minds" and take a wildly aggressive action EARLY in
the match, so as to throw the opponents off-balance, putting
them into the position where they don't know WHAT to expect
from us next. :)

Here we see one of the many DISADVANTAGES of overcalling their
opening suit bids with 1NT. Aside from putting our heads on the
chopping block (with little chance of game once they have opened),
it reveals the trump layout if THEY end up playing in Opener's suit.
Here, the 1NT overcall talked East OUT of bidding 4H. E-W stopped
sensibly in 3H, making.
2NT here was LEBENSOHL, a way for North to show hir Diamonds
without getting 1NT Overcaller too excited. 1H-1NT-2H-3D directly
would show a better hand. Instead, North bid 2NT to force partner
to rebid 3C, whereupon North rebids 3D, natural.

No doubt North was worried that a slow-developing CAPP
2C overcall (showing a 1-suited hand in ANY suit) might allow
E-W a chance to compete easily.

North-South were playing the "Geneva" convention over their
1NT Opening. Playing "Geneva" (aka "McGuinty"), the meanings of the
overcall varies with the strength of the 1NT opening. Against a
strong 1NT, any suit overcall is NATURAL, while a double would be
takeout with any 2- or 3-suited hand. Agaist a WEAK 1NT, 2C shows
Hearts, 2S shows Spades (and either a strong hand OR a 2nd suit),
2H shows both majors (weak) and 2S shows Spades ONLY (weak).
The problem arose when North thought that 1NT was weak
(promising 13-15 points) when, in fact, it was strong (15-17). South
assumed 2C was natural, and expected a HUGE penalty against 2S after
the lead of the C-Queen. As it happened, a HEART lead was the one
which would worked best for N-S. :(

N-S were able to bid a LOT on this hand, owing to the fact
the N-S were playing "Defensive Doubles". South was able to bid
2S because 2S showed a weak, offensively oriented hand. If South
HAD had more HCPs, he could have doubled 2D to show general
defensive strength IN SUPPORT OF SPADES. North was able to bid
3S over 3H BEFORE EAST could. Hence, East had to be content
with a free 4D bid, leading to West's signing off in 5D--no doubt
expecting a loser in EACH major.

Here, West was insistent on 6D after the 2S cuebid, and
probably wondered if he was missing SEVEN diamonds. With the
East hand, I would prefer some sort of invitational Diamond
raise instead of 2S...but E-W were play INVERTED minors, where
2D would be FORCING and 3D PRE-EMPTIVE, leaving East few
INVITATIONAL options.

RODDY did well to find a 2C bid over the forcing 1NT
response to 1H. East dutifully raised to 3C. West, though,
should assume that East is short in Diamonds and compete AT
LEAST as far as 4C here, expected to score quite a few tricks
on a cross-ruff. As it happens, the fact that East's Ace is
in Spades and not Hearts may allow FIVE clubs to make here! Oh,
well, at least they BID Clubs at this table!

Nine-five percent of bridge pairs play a "long-suit-first"
approach. The other five percent play "canape", where one often
bids the SHORTER suit with 4-5 2-suiters. North-South here are
playing Valentines, and EXTREME form of canape, where on ALWAYS
bids the shorter suit. Hence, N-S left it up to EAST to bid
Hearts...and E-W never got around to bidding their best fit, Clubs!
Alas, N-S misdefended. They needed to find a trump lead
early on, to prevent West from scoring all hir trumps. :(

Here, the canape 1S opening finds the spade fit quickly. North's
3S was pre-emptive. East INTENDED hir double as negative, showing
Hearts and some diamond support. But East didn't alert it. Hence,
South played for East to have S-QJx, and went down one. West thought
the double to be penalty, so asking WEST what the double meant (which
is all that I may do in face-to-face bridge) would not have helped
me. Only on OKBridge am I allowed to ast EAST what the double
meant -- and I intend to do so from now on! :)

Here it was RODDY and Memory's turn to have a partnership
misunderstanding. Memory would assert that, according to E-W's
agreements, 2H showed the MAJORS over their forcing 1C, but RODDY
did not seem to agree. :(
Playing on OKBridge is completely different from playing
"f2f" (Face-to-Face) bridge. In clubs, looking at one's convention
card during play is strictly prohibited. On OKBridge, in order to
accomodate and encourage fast partnership formation, it is not
only ALLOWED, it is ENCOURAGED (as long as it isn't time consuming)!
Hence, pairs should NOT have misunderstandings such as E-W had here
IF THEY WRITE THEIR UNDERSTANDINGS DOWN on a convention card!

South's decision over partner's takeout double of 2S illustrates
the difference between IMPs and MatchPoints. South's SPOT CARDS in
their trump suit (Spades) argue in favour of a penalty pass. But at
IMPs, beating 2S one or two will likely be only a fair result; rather
small compensation for when 2S doubled will MAKE! At MatchPoints,
though, 2S doubled making is just ONE bad board, which may be made
up by garnering an extra overtrick on the next hand. Such disasters
are not so quickly nullified at IMPs, where the next opportunity to
gain 10 IMPs might not come for another ten boards -- if ever! :(

Pre-empts work. Especially over a strong 1C. Here, though,
South judged well to remove the double of 4H to 5D. I must say that
had this auction occured at MY table, I would bid 6D as North. If
Opener has nothing in Hearts (as the removal of the double suggests)
then ALL of my HCPs should be GOLD for partner.

South operated on too many times on this hand. 3NT worked
well, in that it go the bidding up to 4H. South bid 3NT in order
to bluff WEST out of a Heart lead and then "steal" the first nine
tricks. Uh, don't try this at home...:)
But then South must PASS, having shown a great hand. When
this comes around to North, Fireside will likely bid 5C or 5D.
Because 1D shows a maximum of 18 HCPs in N-S's methods, slam
thoughts will NOT be entertained at this table. :(

2NT here was "Jordan", a limit raise of Hearts over the
takeout double. 2NT would have little PRACTICAL value as a
natural bid, since with a flat hand in the 11-12 point range
we would not want to "let them off the hook" by bidding. And,
of course, the takeout double precludes much need for a Jacoby
2NT response! With good Heart spots and a void, RODDY happily
accepted.

This was not a "state of the match" penalty pass here.
BOTH East AND West had made LIMITED bids here: 2NT and 3H.
With an Ace, four of their trumps to the Queen and a partner
making doubles OF ANY SORT at the four-level, South was HAPPY
to pass 4H! Still, South would have preferred that North bid
3S over 3H...if it were North's intention to bid on here.

4S was a fine bid by East here. Since 1C often suggests
weak Diamonds--and East is looking at a singleton there--3NT should
NOT occur to East here...no, not even if this were Matchpoints! :)

This hand illustrates one of the most fundamental rules of
play: ATTACK YOUR LENGTH. Once in with the Spade ruff, North must
play on CLUBS. West will likely win the second Club and be
endplayed!
North's FIRST task, though, must be EVALUATION. He must
start by realizing that 4S will MAKE here, so North's task should
be to avoid going down more than 2. -500 will GAIN 3 IMPs against
-620 the other way, while down 3 will LOSE 5 IMPs. Hence, North's
target should be NINE tricks here.

The "Conductor's" Rule states that "when you've got the
tickets, take the SCENIC route!" In other words, if you think
you may have slam, TAKE YOUR TIME and learn as much as you can
about partner's hand.
South was overly HASTY on this hand. North's bidding
showed 8-12 HCPs and 4-5 in the pointed suits. North should
make ONE more bid before signing off in 3NT here. In their
methods, 2H would ask for more information. North would have
rebid 3NT, showing a maximum (else 2NT) 4-2-5-2 hand. THIS
might have been all it took for South to move towards 6D.

A double followed by a free bid in a new suit always shows
a good hand. Looking at three spades and a singleton Club, West
made a FINE 4S call over Memory's 2S rebid.

Here E-W bid 6H, requiring a Heart finesse (50% chance)
and either a 2-2 Spade break (48%) OR a singleton Spade honour
dropping (26%). I rate this slam at about 26% chance of success.
On THIS day, however, ALL such anti-percentage contracts were

Still, Declarer should MAKE 3NT here by OVERTAKING the
