This was a very competitive match, played over two consecutive
Thursdays. The pings were so bad the first Thursday that we
had to quit after 7 boards, delaying the remaining 17 boards
until the second Thursday. Three of the quarters were very
close. Unfortunately, Wintaka and
KSired had a
disastrous session in the third quarter.
The 3rd place Beauties and the Beasts
were, in my opinion, the strongest team that we have played thus far. We
look forward to a rematch.

The comments that you see between the hands are intended for
Kaltica's students. Please ignore them as you enjoy these
records of the decisive hands in this match.

3NT here is an overbid. A simple 2NT rebid would show the
19-21 points. 3NT SHOULD go down, as long as N-S wait until the
SECOND round of Clubs to take their Ace. From North's point of
view, this is a COUNT situation; North should play the C-2 to
show an ODD number of Clubs. South would then wait for the
the C-5 from West before playing the C-Ace. Remember: show
COUNT whenever you suspect partner may want to HOLD UP with the
Ace in a suit. This will tell partner WHICH round to win.

With a full opening bid opposite an albeit balancing double
of 2S, South MUST drive towards game in 3NT. If N-S play the
LEBENSOHL convention, a DIRECT 3NT is in order, DENYING slam
interest (whereas 2NT, forcing 3C, followed by 3NT would SHOW
slam interest). Playing Lebensohl: Slow SHOWS, Direct DENIES.

Here, the Cadets lost a chance to pick up a part score swing.
West should, of course, PASS. Having opened 1D, West MUST pass
the next non-forcing rebid he hears--3S, in this case. He is one
HCP and one Spade SHORT of a minimum for his bidding.
East, too, overbid on this one. His 3C bid was a help
suit game try. 3D suggested minor suit strength. 3S signed off.
Nevertheless, 4S could have MADE if Spades had broken 2-2 or if
North had mistakenly taken the Spade Ace. Instead, though, North
held off until the SECOND round of Spades, got to see partner's
helpful C-J signal, and exited a Club to set the contract.
Without this encouragement, North would NOT have led from the
C-Qxx and Declarer would have been able to toss his Clubs on
the diamonds.

1NT here was 11-14 flat. East transferred into Spades with
2H, which South doubled to show Hearts. West's completion of the
transfer (2S) promised 3 or 4 Spades. North leapt to 4H and East
decided to take the "cheap insurance" in 4S. Good bidding!
Declarer should NOT play the diamond to the King here,
since that leaves the defence with no hope of beating the contract
unless South has the C-Ace. This is consistent with the
Einstein-Idiot Principle, which suggests that the LESS you can
show the opponents about your hands, the better. Better to
play on SPADES, in the hopes that the defence will NOT find
the Club switch here.

E-W were playing a weak 1NT here, 11-14 HCPs. Declarer
could have MADE 1NT simply by finessing the H-9 at trick 2,
returning to dummy with a diamond and finessing another Heart.
The Spade King would, eventually, stand up as the 7th trick.

Here, 1NT by South should have gone down another, if West
were to lead another Heart at any point. West should deduce
from the K-Jack play at trick 8 that Declarer does NOT have
anything in Hearts. The fact that East discouraged in the
Black suits should have served as a second clue. A third
hint was the bidding: a 1NT rebid OFTEN suggests a doubleton
in the Heart suit that North had bid. :(

With a flat hand, it is usually best to defend. Hence, 3S
by East here is NOT recommended...especially without an Ace.
East hoped for a singleton Club from partner, in which case all
9 HCPs in the East hand are "working". South, of course, should
NOT have opened this hand.

This was an interesting defensive hand. Both Easts started
with S-AK and then gave partner a ruff with the S-3, signalling
for a Club return. The key here, though, was trump control. THIS
declarer KEPT the 3rd Heart on dummy before letting East in with
a Club. Hence, this East could not force NORTH to ruff a Spade
with North's last trump, permitting East to run the Spades in the
ending.

Here, North played THREE rounds of trumps before letting East
in with a Club. With no more trumps on dummy, East forced North to
ruff with his last trump. This allowed East to ruff and cash a
good Spade for an extra undertrick.
The interesting this is that 4H was played at BOTH tables in
a "Moysian" (i.e. 4-3) fit. Myself, I prefer a Maxi-Flex double
of 1S to the 2H free bid by North, since 2H seems to have given
South the impression that North had 5-6 in the rounded suits.
Such a double would allow South to pass if South happens to
hold all five of the outstanding Spades. But what would North
rebid when South bids 2D? Not 2H, since there is no longer any
hope of a 4-4 Heart fit. Pass? 3C? 2NT? Any of those would
bring N-S a well-deserved plus score! Indeed, with careful
play and a LITTLE slip by the defence (involving covering the
H-Queen with the H-King), 3NT *might* make--and will never go
down more that one!

In many matches, one player has a particularly difficult time.
Here, Wintaka takes central stage. By his own admission, this was
the worst set he has ever played. Some intermediates in spec were wondering
what was going on with Wintaka,
and asked if Wintaka was in one of my
novice groups! I kept assuring them that Wintaka is,
in fact, a fine player--and my favourite, regular partner. But their
thinking was: "Hmm, this is your idea
of a fine player?!" LOL!

"Perhaps," his partner
quipped later, "athletes are not the only
competitors who should be administered drug tests!"

would be Michaels (showing the majors) here.
In passout seat, RBrough *might* have chanced a balancing
3C here, but chose to save such heroics for MatchPoint play.

West's aggressive balancing double of 2H paid off in spades
here, boosting N-S to a contract which might fail. KSired might
have made 3H here by foregoing the finesse in Hearts to enter his
hand with the H-King and leading a Club towards the C-King on
dummy, pitching a Spade loser on the C-King if West plays the C-Ace.
Only LATER would he finesse in Hearts by ruffing a Club to his
hand and playing towards the H-A10 on dummy to make FOUR.
Finessing the H-Jack at trick three was NOT a bad play,
though, since the balancing double of 2H suggesting that WEST
might be short in Hearts--thereby increasing the likelihood
of the H-Q being in EAST's hand.

"I suffered two cerebral hemmorhages on this hand," quipped
Wintaka. First, this is NOT an opening bid. Second, over 1D:1S
Opener MUST rebid 1NT or 2S (my choice), according to style. 2C
is NOT an option here, since it shows EITHER 9+ minor suit cards
or 1-4-4-4 distribution. Remember: flat opening hands MUST
either OPEN 1NT or REBID 1NT at the FIRST opportunity or raise
1S directly. They do NOT bid new suits at the 2-level!
Once South heard 2C, followed by 2S and then 4S (confirming
3 Spades), South KNEW that Opener had a singleton or void in
Hearts. How else could Wintaka have 3 Spades and 9 minor suit
cards? Bear in mind that South "knows" that Opener does NOT
have a 4-4-3-2 type hand, since Opener would rebid 1NT or 2S
with such a flat hand.

E-W had a nice bidding sequence to get to 6NT here. 2H was
a step response according to their methods, showing an Ace or 2
Kings. The problem with these step responses is one of LEVEL;
East had to bid Hearts at the THREE level, leaving WEST no change
to show any of his suits. 7D is an excellent proposition here,
which HAPPENS to fail ONLY because of the unlucky 5-1 Diamond
split. Nevertheless, the quantitative 4NT bid by Maynard here
got the pair to a very nice spot: 6NT.

The problem with the 2H overcall here is that the Spade
suit gets buried. Sitting North, Wintaka infers that the
enemy have a great Spade fit and sacrifices in 4H. Sadly,
the vulnerability was NOT right for this action on this
hand. AnneK defended well, switching to TRUMPS to prevent
Spade ruffs with the short Heart length. This is a commonly
occurring theme: when the opponents have virtually no HCPs,
their only source of tricks must be TRUMPS. You can LIMIT
these tricks by DRAWING those trumps to prevent a cross-ruff.

In FOURTH seat, a "pre-emptive" opening bid such as 3D shows
a VERY GOOD hand. Opener does NOT anticipate failing in hir
contract; if Opener DID anticipate a minus score, Opener would
PASS OUT the hand. North's fine 3D opening reaped a well-deserved
3 IMPs for +110 versus the passout at the other table.
This is an application of the "Even Seat" rule of pre-empts.
Pre-emptive openings in 4th seat, obviously, are the strongest.
Second strongest are 2nd seat openings, where ONE opponent has
already passed, limited that chances to 50% that it is PARTNER
who has a great hand.
In 1st seat, the odds are 2-1 in your favour that the
OPPONENTS will have the strength at the table. Hence, 1st
seat openings are slightly weaker than 2nd seat ones.
In 3rd seat, all bets are off. Pre-emptor has more or
less ISOLATED the only hand at the table who COULD be strong:
LHO's! Hence, anything goes! :)
In the play, Declarer has guaranteed his contract and
should FINESSE with the singleton Heart. If it loses, he
can still pitch a club on the H-Ace. Hence, the finesse
here is a "heads we win, tails we break even" proposition,
and should be assayed for an extra 20 points. +130.

E-W were playing 2/1 GF here, so 1NT was FORCING for 1 round.
Over 3D, West rebid 3H to show a near-opening hand with 6+ good
Hearts. East went on to game. Behind by a LOT at this point,
South began "swinging" with a double, hoping to recoup some of
our losses it 4H were to go down. North led a trump to prevent
any Club ruffs, but West placed the Heart length with South,
finessed in Hearts and made SIX, doubled, for 1190.
Were we NOT down so much, of course, South would NOT
"tip his hand" with a double here.

After 2 flat boards, Wintaka found an interesting 1H overcall
with the North hand. Over 4S, South bid 5C to encourage a CLUB
return once partner was put on lead against a likely 5S contract.
When this was doubled, South rebid 5D en route to 5H. 5D doubled
would have made a rather easy overtrick!
North should NOT bid 5H here, since that should show EXTRA
Heart length. Nevertheless, 5H doubled is a fine contract and,
without a Spade lead, will MAKE with careful play. North set up
the minors and then gave the opponents their Heart tricks to
make 5H on the nose. Well played!

Notwithstanding Ward Rule #17 (i.e. "The only defence against
a pre-empt is an overbid"), 5S was a stretch here. 5S SHOULD ask
for a Diamond control here. 4D FOLLOWED by 5S should request
two of the top 3 Spade honours. In MY opinion, East should choose
between a 4S free bid and 4D, followed by 4S. The latter course
of action (4D, then 4S by East) would be a general slam try. With
only one Ace, West would decline ANY such general slam try here.
6S doubled SHOULD go for it's life here on a 4th best H-2
lead. Knowing that the second Heart will not cash, North might
conclude that a Club switch would be in order. The defence would
then score 2 red Aces, C-AK and a ruff in Clubs for down FOUR!
"Sticks and wheels" (-1100) would NOT have been a success here! :(

THIS hand illustrates one reason why OKBridge is superior to
Face-To-Face bridge for serious competition. I mismoused my 2D
bid, but was able to tell the opponents about the misunderstanding
2D would cause. In this way, while my partner remained in the
dark, the opponents were NOT damaged by our error. In live
bridge, either ONE (if screens were in place) or BOTH (if screens
were NOT in place) of our opponents would be left oblivious to
the problem.
South's PROPER bid in the Canadian Club was 2C, NOT 2D,
to show 5+ Diamonds and game-forcing values opposite the strong
(16+ point) 1C opening. 2D, in fact, showed 5+ CLUBS and said
NOTHING about Diamonds in our methods! :(
2H by North asked for a "2nd" suit (other than the promised
Clubs). 2NT showed 4 AND ONLY 4 Diamonds. 3D confirmed Diamonds
as trumps (Thank God!). 4C promised a Club control and better
than a minimum 8-point responding hand (otherwise, we gun for
3NT on the minor suit fit). 4D asked for trump quality and
general strength. 4H showed the Queen of trumps (i.e. Diamonds)
and a 12-point hand. PASSing the double of 4H asked South for
Aces and/or the King of Diamonds. 4S showed ONE such "Key Card".
North signed off in 6D and we chalked up +1370 for a 12 IMP gain.
The opponents were impressed! "Heck," one of them said,
"they mismoused and STILL found the right contract!"

Maynard is a fellow advocate of Hemmingway Pre-empts. 2H,
vulnerable, would make any conservative bidder blanch. The idea
of such pre-empts is not to quibble over whether we will go for
-800 or -1100. The more we go down, generally, the more THEY
can make. Here -800 is a likely result: a small loss to -690
but a big gain if your team mates find 6D--and the Space Cadets
DID have the Canadian Clubbers at the other table! :)
Here, 2H did its job, making it EXCEEDINGLY tough for
N-S to find 6D. 3D here was Lebensohl, showing 8-13 points
and 4+ Diamonds.

With 2 bad 12 HCP hands and no 8-card major fit, it would be
nice to avoid game here. Towards this end, East must pass,
devaluating the D-Qx. West would open 1C and rebid either PASS
East's 1H reply or rebid 1NT. East would raise the 1NT rebid
to 2NT and West would pass. +120 instead of -100.
Maynard played this well, attacking CLUBS early. Sadly,
the Heart lead was a singleton and the defensive cross-ruff
began. Too bad, since the trump layout would have actually
allowed us to MAKE 4S while 3NT fails !

Strangely, experienced players often advise novices not to
overcall on 4-card suits...and then proceed to do so themselves!
BOTH East's bid 1H over 1D, as I would! 4-card overcalls are,
in fact, often necessary to draw a certain lead or describe a
hand which cannot be described with a takeout double--usually
because of a shortness in one of the unbid suits. Here, 1H
pinpoints most of East's HCP strength.

South's pass of 1H awaited developments. In balancing seat,
a double by South might not be viewed as penalty. It may, instead,
have been interpreted as showing 4-4 in the Black suits. South
reluctantly competed with 3D, hoping to hear 3H for East or West.
Hey, a guy can dream! :)
North executed a nice squeeze here after seeing East return
the C-Q (usually showing the C-Jack) at trick 6. By playing off
his diamonds and entering dummy with the S-Ace, North squeezed
East in the rounded suits. Dummy's last three cards would be
the H-K10 and the C-8, opposite North's C-K105. Which 3 cards
could East keep? If he keeps C-Jx he can't keep H-QJ and
Dummy's H-K10 will be established. If East retains H-QJ to
control the Heart suit, he will have to denude the C-Jack. He
chose the latter option. Declarer played to his C-King,
dropped the now singleton C-Jack on his left and claimed 3D.
Well played, Wintaka!

While it is hard to argue with success, I would NEVER
allow a jump shifting Opener to have another chance to bid. I
would pass 3C in a HEARTBEAT here, hoping that they had missed
a game.
A jump shift in a new suit should show 19-21 points. I
slightly prefer a 2C rebid with the South hand, since NEITHER
black suit is strong. Note that a jump shift is only 99% forcing.
With 2 Black Queens and a doubleton diamond, though, I would
have bid on with the North hand. Remember: Queens and Jacks
in your partner's long suit are like gold. It is Queens and
Jacks in the OTHER suits which should be devalued.

The time to bid Diamonds is IMMEDIATELY over the opening
bid. Here East made a reasonable 3D just. If playing natural
overcalls of 1NT here, my own preference would be to overcall 2D,
perhaps with the idea of rebidding the Spade suit. This would
make maximum us of bidding space.

At IMPs, we must bid our games aggressively, but not
wildly. Since 1S could have been bid on as little as 8 HCPs
and never more than 16, the West hand is barely strong enough
for 2S...and would rarely miss a makeable game by doing so.
If East had a strong hand, she could move towards game over 2S.

North's 1NT opening bid precluded any thoughts of game
here. East's 2S overcall ended matters, garnering the Cadets
a surprising 8 IMPs.
